after 14 years of using windows, last week I bought my first mac.
it is an Imac 8.1. A verrrry nice computer bty!!!!
anyway....
I am a complete neophyte with this OS , slowly learning bits and pieces. I have searched for a good tutorial, have looked at quite few, and was wondering if anyone could recommend a good website for old windows users switching to OS 10?

I'll take a look. Mainly, though, there are a few differences right off the bat. I find it very easy to move between either (I prefer Macs, but use Windows @ work and on one laptop).

Keyboard shortcuts: for many of them, replace t he "ctrl" key with the "apple" key. So "apple"-c for copy instead of "ctrl"-c

Dock vs. windows taskbar and start menu. This should just take a few days to get accustomed to. Most of the "Start" items from windows other than programs will be under your top menu on the Mac. If an application you like isn't in the Dock, it's easy to put it in...just go to Applications in a Finder window, run the app, and then right-click on the application icon in the dock. You'll see an option to keep that application icon in the dock.

Saving files on desktop - works the same

Saving files in folders - works pretty much the same but in the case of Macs, the drives are named, not given letters (like in Windows C: drive).

System files - on the Mac these are mainly in the user's library folder, the main library folder on the hard drive, and the system folder on the hard drive.

Properties - generally = "Get Info" on the mac ("apple"-i)

Recycle bin = trash can. Just drag the file down to the trashcan icon in the Doc, or single click on the file and chose "Move file to trash" from the top menu, or right click on the file and chose it there.

EDITED TO ADD: on the apple site, there's a video tutorial called PC to Mac, the Basics

thank you!!
I have watched that, and a number of other vids on the apple sight, have youtubed mac for begginers, ... a real test of patience, and a bit of googling.
the real frustration came when my friend sent me a wmv that quicktime didn't recognize.... I now have flip4mac (something like that) and just have to get used to the quicktime format.
I am hoping to find someone close who uses a mac that can answer direct questions, but until then, I just have to keep playing and experiencing, and learning.

hey Makarizo - feel free to PM me with questions. I switched from PC to Mac last Jan., and I remember the transition that you're going through. To quote Obi-Wan Kenobi, "Congratulations my friend! You've taken your first step into a larger world."
