Right now in youth, we are thinking of hot topics and how to battle them thru the word. U could use anything: abortion, pre-maritial sex, drugs, alcohol, etc. I hope God gives way for them to gain wisdom thru it all and the confidence to speak what they know! Pray for us!

Those are good topics, but what about the teens that aren't interested in them? I'm not trying to be sarcastic, either. There are teens that don't use drugs, alcohol, and don't even want to date at 15.
It's sort of like going to Sunday school and learning about Adam and Eve and Moses every year. I think there are a lot of teens that want to go farther than learning what not to do. There are a lot of them that want to do right and already know not to do wrong. They are ready for the "meat" but are still being bottle fed. The youth groups need to figure out something to do with these teens.
Don't take me the wrong way. It's just something that I have seen happen in churches for years and then the people wonder why the teens stop attending. They need to be challenged.

Judii I so agree I saw this as my two daughter were in HS and that the reason we as parent stayed involed and after the girls became adults we retrun to college AND hushband got his dregree as Youyh Pastor! , So sad even with all our experican most church want children directions , they just do not see HOW impratant YOUTH is IS!! And so many wonder why our nation is going the way it is and so many of our church are empity! Untill We as adults wake up and see How we are failing the youth!! We only have our self to know we have failed the youth of today In school and in our churchs!! If only we could have a youth awaking like the 70's and Jesus rallies and praise and worship will come back in to our communitys1 Sorry this is soo close to my heart if we had better service for our youthy we would not have youth on drug/having sex/bored with life playing in grang/etc!! Give them a place to come /a reason to come / they will ! Give them Jesus!

I probably didn't explain myself well. I don't mean explain to the kids what they should/shouldn't do. For the most part they know that stuff. What our focus has been on is how to become evangelists, how to talk with others about those things and use Biblical support for that. You should check out WayoftheMaster.com - I recently purchased the School of Biblical Evangelism and the Evidence Bible. It has some really good topics - how to refute abortion, evolution, etc. I think we sometimes don't give them the opportunity to study the scriptures and to use it as a sword when facing adversary - its a challenge to them and I think a way the message sometimes don't get presented.

Plus, format of presentation has a lot to do with it. We did a debate a few weeks ago on a topic one of the kids asked about and it was AMAZIN' the focus and result of the debate. They were encouraged to use their Bibles to support their arguements and it also serves as an assessment of their knowledge of the word and the maturity of their walk so that then you can take them to the next level.

Also, we have a "suggestion box" in our room that the kids can write down questions that they want to know answers on and how to speak on the topics when they are in their daily lives. U'd be surprised out how their brain thinks sometimes - I've been amazed at some of the things they come up with and if the youth ministers don't dive into it, then who will do it for them?

Good luck!

French 100 Now I know what you mean so many of the youth group plans are out of touch with what the youth really want a answer to! Few year ago at our camp I had 6 young ladies HS ask how to witness to a friend with the bible Now that was a schock to me because these ladies were from christian home and been in churh activies all the 14 yr of their life but the church /teacher had read the bible to them but not showed them how to us the Bible ! ( now we are youth leaders on another church )Now even in our youth group we open and show the teen where to find the answers ns how to look up thing to suport what they want to know. It can suprise what the teen really want to know and how they handles it ! I will look up the site you have listed, In the pass monthe we bee talking and seekinf what the aWord tell us about respect/truth/the reall have come great question as in How to respect a parent that beat/drinks/dope/etc ! Had to dig deep for that answer! But the Love of youth is our calling!I

HJ-
Thank you for your post - its motivated me further ;) I have been searching for a while now for a new "focus", like the other posts, something to challenge them and help them grow. I am a BIG Way of the Master fan as well as livingwaters.com - both sites, same guys. I think you will like the gospel message and how it is presented from these 2 sites. Its different and modern AND it is Biblical. They have some downloads and freebies you can use as well if you choose to wait on purchases. Have fun browsing it - I can spend hours there! ;)

And isn't that the biggest blessing we can get, is for God to use us in discipleship to create evangelists? To be trained right along side them as we are teaching? I know for me it helps me grow just preparing lessons for them because I don't know it all - But with their pushing, it helps me to learn!

I wish you the best of luck - our youth deserve individuals who will push them above and beyond their typical "Biblical" lessons and help them grow and it sounds as tho that is just what you are on your way to doing - I'll be praying for you guys (please do the same for us).

2 suggestions for reads for every youth minister. Even if you've been in the ministry along time, I will encourage these reads. They are enjoyable to read, and such an incredible help in just pushing the ministry forward. Both by Doug Fields

Your First Two Years in Youth Ministry - LOTS OF GOODIES HERE!

The Purpose Driven Youth Ministry - I'm using this now. It breaks down the 5 purposes of the Christian walk, how to decide a focus for our youth ministry, and to encourage, etc. Lots of other good stuff. He's a great writer - I'm a BIG fan.

I´d like to offer an opportunity to try an awesome new place for church mission trips for both youth and intergenerational groups. My wife and I are volunteering for a year at Roblealto Association in San Jose Costa Rica. This organization has been serving the poorest of the poor in San Jose for over 75 years through day care centers, foster care and temporary shelter, Christian school, sports, etc.

We have 11 weeks open this year for groups and we want to promote a low cost - high value experience in the safest country in Central America. Not to mention it is beautiful and there are amazing side trips to active volcanoes, rainforest and beautiful beaches. But that is not the reason to come (tempting as they are). For $20 a day per person (food and lodging) plus money raised for work project, you can serve at Roblealto for a week or two weeks and meet wonderful children who are being rescued out of poverty and violence and into the arms of Christ.

Roblealto has a fantastic success record and has yet to see a repeat generation from the same family in the program!

Check us out at www.roblealto.org for a great mission opportunity!
