That is great! Keep me posted about the need for lights when you make the final decision.
I cannot begin to tell you how the photo ministry has changed the openess of the neighbors to me as the photographer and, by extension, to the church. They stop me and show me how much bigger their dogs have grown and those who I stop when I see a dog or child we haven't photographed have heard about it from their neighbors and are happy to see they will have another opportunity. Their smiles are HUGE... when before they barely spoke to us, considering, I suppose, outsiders.
I suspect that the young 'clients' would REALLY welcome having great photos of their baby and themselves. It's a great idea. PM me.

That is great!
I just mentioned in the other thread that my church is an inner-city church. But maybe more appropriate here is neighborhood photography outreach. My wife and I are in the process of buying a house in an older neighborhood, with mostly older residents. The house has a second, separate, one-car garage that I am thinking of setting up a photo/video studio in (to my wife's dismay, as she had thought of using it as her craft area, but I suppose it can be shared). Offering to photograph grandparents when their grandkids are visiting may be a good way to get to know people and start conversations.

Great idea. And, you can photograph her crafts! I can give you some pointers for making an inexpensive shooting table using PVC pipe.
Here is a story that demonstrates that how the grandparent/grandchild connection can open doors.
In 1976 I was hired by the National Park Service to create a series of video tapes. One of these tapes was to be about the Hubbell Trading Post on the Navajo Reservation. Two women were weaving the huge Bicentennial rug. I could not get them to answer a single question as I attempted to videotape them. My assumption was that they didn't speak any english.
So, failing to get any useful footage I began to take video of a little two-year old playing in the area and playing it back for her to see. All of a sudden these women opened up to me and gave me wonderful details about making Navajo rugs (which where originally horse blankets). The child was the grandchild of the lead weaver. It was the best footage I captured in the entire series. Then, they called in the grandfather, a medicine man, and he allowed me to video tape some ceremonial chants in a Hogan. As far as I know, this was the first, and may be the only, such footage taken by a non-Navajo. I have to add that I was a bit uncomfortable. But, still recognized the honor that they were showing me... all because I took the time to videotape a child.

Too strange, I lived in Kayenta in 1976. You may have even passed through there in your travels. According to Mapquest it's only 142 miles.

We came through the 4 Corners area and probably jumped off 160 and traveled down 191. So, we probably cut off too soon. I do remember one day when we drove through a sandstorm, a hail storm, snow and hot desert all on the same road! I have a photo of me throwing snowballs in shorts. It was probably in May.

If you were at 4 corners you probably came through Teec Nos Pos, My dad worked for the highway department so you drove right by his second facility.
I looked up Kayenta on Google maps and wow has it changed. When I was there we had 2 trading posts, a holiday in and the Peabody Coal trailer park. Now it looks like real town, when I was there it was really nothing more than a junction. I couldn't even be sure of the place we lived, may not even be there any more.

It was back in 1975, so I have NO memory of that region except that we stopped to look at silver jewelry. :)

Hey everyone, I have the opportunity to test a Mac Mini today and maybe a little tomorrow. Just wondering what others use for photo conversion and editing.
Photoshop elements for Mac discontinued their free trial for a while, so I won't be able to do anything with that. The Mac tech that was trying to help us (long story) said Iphoto did a real good job.
Any recommendations? Advice?

Thanks for the recommendation. I liked the Mac but wound up returning it to my friend, who in turn returned it to the store. They were great about accepting it back under his circumstances. I was impressed with Mac all around. I've tried Gimp for windows and must admit it's way over my head for now. Maybe soon.
I dug a little deeper (looked up the Arizona one) and from what I gather a photo walk is just that. You and a bunch of other photographers walk a designated path and take photographs. Not sure if there's competition involved or not. I wouldn't mind doing one just to see how and what others do, and maybe give some pointers to those just learning. I think the educational aspect could be great if you find someone that likes to talk, some photographers seem to be all business, others will share just about everything. I tend to hang around the talkative ones that seem to know what they are talking about (not all seem to).

As for Macs, I'm planning to get an iMac next year. Just debating as to how much I'll use it for photo and video work. Can you do much more with Aperture than with DPP and free software for Linux? If so I may well buy it.

Got any friends with Macs? That would be the best way to try stuff out, especially if you install evaluation software. Unfortunately I only have one friend with a Mac, but he's across the valley from us and has a reasonably busy life. Trying to get together just for a visit has been difficult. Some weekend or over night I may get him to do all the installs the leave his computer on and I'll use Teamviewer to log in. Not everyone will do that for you since they're basically leaving their computer totally in your control.
I'm going to keep watching Adobe's site. If they start offering the Mac trial for Elements again I'm going to grab it. Since that's what I use, that would be the only way for me to compare 'Apples' to 'Apples' so to speak.

I use a modified diaper bag after having my first Canon Rebel stolen from my car.

I have 4 different types of camera bags and the one that I use most often is a sling bag. It's wonderful.
It's a LowelPro Slingshot 200AW.

It's very comfortable and slides from your back to the front for removing the camera or changing lenses. I've used it with the XSi and the 5DMKII and the XSi with 70-200 easily fits along with lenses and flash units.

Thinking about getting some new stuff in the near future.
This tripod -- I like the fact that it is not too heavy, and can get low for ground level shots (since I like my macro lens). Hopefully it will work with my existing heads (I have one for still photos and one for video) although they are cheap.
Fast normal range lens. Leaning towards the Sigma 30mm f/1.4. Wondering if it or the Canon 17-55 IS f/2.8 would make better images overall. Want something with significantly better image quality than the kit lens (not that it is all that bad!). I think I could live with a 30mm prime, especially since I also have the 10-22 for wider shots and I can crop for shorter (not to mention feet movement). The 30mm is less than half the price of the 17-55.
External flash. Maybe the 430EX.
This Sunday is our church social out in the country. I and the others in the upcoming photo ministry will bring our camera gear, and this will be a good chance to introduce the idea to more of the church at large. We'll see where God takes it from there.

Got to play with someone's Canon 70-200 f/2.8L on my XSi at a church event Sunday. Really nice, but not sure if it would justify $1700.
Trying to justify any photography purchase one of two ways:
* Demonstrable ministry value
or
* Would pay for itself with freelance gigs
Hard to see how that lens would do either at the moment. Seems like its best uses are sports and wildlife. I already have the 55-250IS which isn't half bad. But maybe someday.

TMeeks: Any further thoughts on flashes that you've tried recently? I know you PM'ed me once that the Canon flashes may be overpriced and not as flexible as you'd like. But there is a $50 rebate on the 580EX right now, and it's only $370 at B&H. I wonder if that would be a worthwhile investment. I used to balk at the idea of paying that for a flash but I think I'm convinced now that I need one.

I stumbled across the key to making the Canon Flash system work like I expected it should work. So, I've modified my thoughts regarding the Canon E-TTL benefits. And, if I only had one Canon flash it would be the 580EX.
The key is to set the camera's menu to sync at 1/200th and then use aperature priority (Av Mode). Even though the settings will show a slower shutter speed, the actual picture seems to be shot at 1/200th. I let ISO float.
This setting seems to force the flash to fire brighter than it wants to with other settings, such as 'P' or 'TV' mode. I think I'll be testing this more in a dark situation this weekend. But, the tests I've already done lead me to believe that I finally have figured out how best to use the Canon system.
As for the lens...
My Canon 24-70L f2.8 seems to be sharper than my Canon 70-200L f2.8. And, I understand that the Canon 70-200L f4.0 is suppose to be sharper than the f2.8 version. I haven't tried testing the differences; but, I'm inclined to believe that I'd go with the f4.0 over the f2.8 and save the money for a prime.

I probably should have a better solution for carrying this stuff, but the airlines only allow one "main" carryon (with my computer case being the "personal item") and I did handle the bag fairly carefully.
