One of the sadest funerals I went to was for a cousin, about 23, who died from a misdiagnosed cancer and left a wife and two small children. Also sad was the fact that it was the first time I had ever seen him, in the casket.

That surprised me too. He seemed to be perpetually late 40s/early 50s.

A few days ago my kids and I were looking at some articles and tapes I saved from the anniversary that Reagan spoke. Great stuff. One tape showed all the old men who were there, and it was sweet. Frankly, after seeing Saving Private Ryan, I could never look at old men the same way again.

My dad, a young sailor, was part of a landing craft crew that ran equipment to the beach on D-Day. He didn't talk much about it until his later years. While he was in the hospital at age 72 with an illness that eventually led to a major stroke and his death 6 years later, he told me, "I really believed that I would die in the war. So I consider all of my life after it to be gravy, an unexpected gift." That gave me a lot to ponder.

Oh, don't feel sorry for me. I only crave a donut about once every 10 years. Now if we're talking Mexican food, that's another story. I cannot get that around here like I can back in Texas. I do miss that, but not enough to go back. LOL!
