I love "just chords".... I can listen to them, and fill my mind with any mode imaginable.
listen to the song bluesette sometime. lots of chords
bluesette
the first 11 measures of this songs are pretty much just the chords.

the guy who wrote this is the same guy who played the ending song of sesame street.

I hear you.

How 'bout this one?

when sunny gets blue

The thing about chording is that it's not really designed to stand alone (if we're talking jazz that rule goes out the window), but it is a skill that a good musician should have. If someone can only read music (meaning only read the notes on a page), they are very limited in what they can do. It's been my experience that if someone can chord and keep time, they have much more flexibility than those who can only read notes on a page.

Chording is good but I agree with some of the other posts here. It does tend to be boring without the melody present - especially when it is simply "strummed" on the guitar .

I play a guitar. I have for over 30 years and I do both. My favorite is a mix of melody and chords. At least that way people recognize the song. I don't read music however except for the melody line. This makes life difficult sometimes but I generally get along.

Sing me a tune and I can pick it up and play it within a few minutes. Getting it in a key where you can sing it? That 's a bit of a challenge.

Loved the song bzirk!!!
I learned improvisation in 7th grade, I played the trumpet, and was a bit of a prodigy....in 7th grade I played in H.S. band, and if ever there was an improv, the solo was all mine!!
there are 3 things that make a song good..... chord structure, mode (melody line), and rhythm.
a good rhythm is the key to making a good song great.

I have a rather unique ministry at the moment. I am Baptist but my "church" is in the Nursing home. I don't have a regular congregation at this point. I am in between churches by God's choice.

He has given me a ministry in the local "Life Care Center" working with a very diverse group of older citizens. They are unable to attend regular church services outside the nursing home, so I bring the services to them.

Been doing it for 30 plus years off and on in different places and I love it. Started when I was 13 and went with two older men from my church. I play the guitar and sing and then preach a short message.

Thanks for asking.

WOW!!

This is EXACTLY what God has my husband doing right now! He JUST got through calling me to tell me that a woman named Grace may possibly be going "Home" in the next few minutes. (Pray that she responds to his praying with her.)

Isn't it interesting how God has all these agendas that we have no clue about... until!

wants to whine because usually jobs are looking for people with experience, but what about the people with no experience that would like an opportunity to gain experience?

This is more of a lament than a whine...

In our youth ministry, we have decided to go into in-depth study of the book of Romans with the youth. I'm sure the lot of you know what this means. TONS of meaty stuff. We're excited to get into it with the youth and just DIVE in DISSECT and DEVOUR.....but apparently more than half of these youth aren't even serious about it. Most are too busy passing notes, giggling, and whispering in each other's ear. The youth director had to repeat to them about 5 times (or more) to open up their Bibles to the book of Romans.

Maybe it's just my age (I may be getting old), but if I were a teen, I would be sooooooooo on my toes about studying Romans, especially because it speaks volumes about the fundamental principles of the Christian faith, and as teenagers, they've got so many questions, so many doubts about belief, faith and what not. I would think that studying Romans would help so much in answering those questions....yet most of them who have been going to Sunday School for most of their lives and have been raised in a Christian family don't have the ears to hear, or lack that intense hunger to know the truth even though we are more than willing to teach!!

Hah, the youth ministry at my church would be ready and willing to hear what you have to impart on the book. I'm very glad for that.

I really have nothing I can really whine about, save for maybe the inherent problems that come with ages younger than me and that I am working on understanding that not everyone has been through the same testimony as I had and hasn't been healed of things yet.

Ladyichigo:

That truly is a "lament". It is a sad one and a sad comment on the state of affairs in the church these days.

You might try praying for those teens who show little or no interest in spiritual things like Bible Study. I have done a sermon series on Romans and it is a deep, deeeeeeeeeeeep study of Christian doctrine.

In this day when people will believe almost anything and stand for nothing, a study of Romans is most needed. Pray for those teens, many of them may not even be believers in the true sense. A lack of hunger for spiritual things is one of the marks.

Now for my whine. I am getting fed up with the NEGATIVE campaigning of both parties in this election. Some of it is very, very low down and dirty. I just don't see how "cutting your opponent to shreds or his running mate to shreds" helps a campaign.

It seems everyone is talking so much dirt that no one is focusing on the issues or any real solutions.

There I have said my piece for today.

Those jobs are taken by the under-paid and over-qualified people that are too old to be hired at the level they are most qualified to fill.

I am so very tired of people who don't understand the difference between tradition and TRUTH. Truth, as in the gospel. As in the necessities. Nothing wrong with tradition, as long as you understand that that's what it is.

Some sacred cows need to be made into hamburger meat.

hear-hear! (on the cows...things)

It's one thing to say that those traditions can help one see & understand the TRUTH better, and another to say that those traditions are NECESSARY for the truth to be seen & understood.
...wait did I write that correctly? Grrrraah....my brain is mush today, thanks to only 3 hours of sleep.

Well it don't feel good being all stretched and pulled at the seams and all. I find I need to buy a small pack of Kleenex for my purse. What a cry baby I am becoming. The number of folks at church and in our homeschool support group hugging me and telling me they are praying for Jerry, Me, and the kids is overwhelming. A peaceful overwhelming if it makes sense.

The learning to sleep in a big bed alone and take care of all the household stuff is the painful part.

I just re-read my post and realized that some folks might not know what I am refering to...

my husband (Jerry) is in the Army and is being deployed to Iraq. We are in day 6 of his pre-deployment trip to Iraq. He has been gone since Sept 4 and should be home this weekend and then home for a week maybe two and then he is officially not home for a year.

Oh, good night! No wonder you are haveing a rough time. I remember this just before I read your post explaining. Good night, I don't know what I'd be doing. I am glad you have your church and family. Thank you for reminding us.

I'm back on for a little while tonight, Popsi! You're so sweet to miss me! Wow.

It never looks like I'm here unless I post something, because I told the profile not to say I am here.

See, sometimes, I have a problem. Sometimes, I want to answer a post, but I need to think it through instead of just jumping in there and getting toe jam in my teeth for putting my foot in my mouth. I do it enough when I am slow to respond! So this way, I can take my time about answering things, and I can pray about answers.

Will you be able to be in contact with your husband?

Thankfully I am blessed with an awesome people person (think Human Resource) so that means he will have all sorts of communication type opportunities that a lot of others might not have. He has been gone since the 4th over there and I have received 4 or 5 emails and 4 phone calls.
