I have a question for those who are experienced at cooking about something I heard someone say recently, but am unsure of the validity of.

I heard someone say in passing (overhearing their conversation) that when you are cooking that you can add salt to cut tomatoes to drain them of their water/wateriness. From what I could understand, if you are hoping to cook something with tomatoes and don't want all the watery and runny-ness from them, then you can add salt to them and let them sit. Then after a while supposedly (from what I could hear/understand) the water comes out and you can drain them out. Aftewards, your tomatoes are still the same, but with less water in them?

Does anyone happen to know if this is true and/or if I heard the process correctly? I don't use a lot of tomatoes in my cooking (since I don't cook much to begin with - maybe twice a week), but I do find they can be a bit too runny sometimes for certain foods I'm making.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I will share what I do--I can so I make salsa and wat it thick--peel tomatoes, place tomatoes in a colander over an large pot or boellet sit covered for 30-60 min the juice will drain out--I would not use salt or you will have a salty tomato--

You can cut and lightly salt your tomatoes (placing them in a colander to allow the juice to drain away). You do run the risk (as Charity said) of ending up with salty tomatoes. You can also cut them and dry them out in the oven for a bit.

What are you cooking?

Hey charity,

I'm a very very big novice at cooking anything, so I'm not familiar with kitchen terms. What did you mean by "boellet" and "colander"?

I also thought of making a salsa too later on this Friday. For now, I'm just using them in sandwiches. I don't mind a lightly salted tomato for what I'm using it for, but I was mostly just wonering if the salt does, in fact, force the water out without any other negative effects.

As for the 30-60 min part, I may skip that if it takes that long. I was thinking it'd take 5 minutes or so, LOL. The tomatoes I bought are actually not that watery compared to cheaper ones I usually buy. For some reason, the very large ones I have are quite solid and not very runny this time. But it's still great info. for me to know for the future, so I appreciate your suggestion! Thanks.

Yes, squoosh is commonly referred to as squeeze, but I like saying squoosh.

I usually cut them in half and squeeze them so the seeds come out. If you don't want to squeeze them, try removing the seeds with a spoon, chop them and lay them thinly on a paper towel over a plate. lightly pat them with another paper towel. That should work as well.

Other than making them taste a little salty, yes. You can also do the same with cucumbers, eggplant, pretty much any vegetable (or fruit) that has a high water content. But be careful to use just a small amount.

Hmmm, I'll try that this weekend! I don't mind salty tomatoes, but I will go light for sure!

I find with cucumbers that the watery and seedy part isn't as runny as with tomatoes. ....I can much more easily deal with a cucumber. But with tomatoes, sometimes that runniness of the inside seedy area is so slimy it can ruin the texture/taste of something more easily for me. So that's why I liked the idea of possibly salting them to get the water to "come out" and drain them more easily - without having to squeeze and possibly crush them and/or deform them too much.

Thanks everyone.

You can quarter them and take out the seeds.

That was what I was gonna say when I read his latest post. Or else buy slightly underripe tomatoes. They'll be harder and less "runny".

You could of course just buy sun-dried tomatoes to start with, then you wouldn't need to do a thing!
