As someone with a strong affinity towards mysticism my reponse would be those people you quoted were heretics. The purpose of Christian mysticism is to come into an experience of God; the same God who revealed himself in Jesus Christ, who said that He is the only way to the Father. There certainly is a large group of so called mystics who purport universalism, but this is not true Christian mysticism. Also, Christianity isn't meant to bring us to devotion to "universal principles". Christianity is the reality of receiving the life and presence of God within us, then those virtues will flow naturally as He lives through us. To devote ourselves to mere stand-alone virtues would be us living by our own power, by the flesh. This is antithetical to Biblical Christianity. I wouldn't say those quotes are an accurate representation of what true Christian mysticism is.

Some extremely relevant questions and excellent insights on this topic. Thank you, gloryandgrace and timreadsbooks. You guys really open this up, at least to me. It is, I must confess, a favorite topic of mine. In an earlier day, coming out of my Catholicism, I saw the mystical tradition as the righteous rebuttal against that tired and judgmental faith, Christianity. I grew out of that. To me, the mystic is simply not limited to "knowing" God through Scripture; truth has truly set him free for a direct relationship, which always seems to lead, in true mysticism, to unconditional love. As has been pointed out, there are dangers here. But the dangers are no less for those that strictly follow a doctrinal tradition or any path. For the mystic, is not about belief but action. The proof of their "mystical experience" is in Christ-like action.
