My grandma is dying. She lives a good 12 hours from me. I REALLY feel torn about if I should attend the funeral or not. I want to be there and at the same time don't want to take a newborn baby on such a long road trip and then I also still get sore from the C-section. I have my doctor's okay about a road trip while recovering from the C-section, but I don't know how sitting upright for such a long time would do, I personally think it would make me feel a little sore. Then the thought of stopping so often to feed and care of the baby...uhg. What would you do if you were in my shoes? I just don't know what to do.

With the cost of gas and everything else can you afford to fly on your own? It's not super expensive these days... you could probably fly for $250 round trip, maybe less depending on where you are going and the baby would fly free.

That's what I was thinking. And baby "stuff" like car seats and pack n plays are not included in your luggage tally.

It's anywhere between 600-800 dollars for a flight and then they all have a connecting flight. There is one for 4 hours, which is really good...but so out of our price range. The other flights were around 7 hours or so.

Would you be driving, or would you be a passenger? Would any other adult be going with you?

You might also qualify for bereavement fares. I think you have to pay the full amount up front and then present a copy of the death certificate for a partial refund. I know that can be very difficult. We were in a similar situation (no kids, but not enough money) when Mark's mom passed away a few years ago. Fortunately we found cheap tickets on a discount carrier that we could afford and were less than the bereavement fares. Have you checked Southwest? I am very sorry to hear about your Grandmother. Personally.....I would be ok with the c-section part. But, with a newborn and all those germs and feedings and diapers and such? That is a long time for a newborn to be in a car.

I will be praying for you...that you find an inexpensive and "easy" way to deal with this need right now. I am sorry for your loss.....
