I think it does. However, one tends to miss more of the body of the book when listening to it. I couldn't recommend listening to a book that you needed to get information from.

If no actual people are injured in the usage of the world I love the word 'war-mongering.' I think we should all think of ways to use it more. If someone says 'did you read that article in the NY Times this morning?' and your husband read it to you do you say... No (true but also untrue because it doesn't answer the underlying question the person is asking you). No, but my husband read it to me (a bit pedantic). Yes, why? (Answering the real question which is 'do you know this information?') Because reading is the main way we access information people ask about it, not if you heard it or read it aloud or downloaded it on to a zip drive. Most people understand the underlying question which is 'did you access that information?' Because English is such a flexible language and modern technology is moving so quickly we're still working out ways to express this question. We do so with references to what is familiar (books/newspapers/magazines). If that same person asked you if you read the NY Times article this morning and you read it on the computer on a completely different site (say an aggregator or AP site, do you say No? Clearly you didn't read the Times. But you understand the underlying question which is asking if you accessed specific information (no matter the means or source).

I would say how I got the information: my husband read it to me, I read it online, I heard it on the radio, saw it on TV, etc. I prefer precise speech.

Voted for 'it counts but would still clarify'. I read ALOT; always have always will; but know a few people who prefer to listen to audiobooks. As long as it was unabridged I've always been able to discuss the book with some who has listened to it. Have found (in my own experience) that the narrator might put change the 'tone' of the character's words so we might not agree about the whole story line; but that also happens just between two people who have read the book. I 'hear' the voices of all the characters when I read so don't particularly like audiobooks (and because the narrator reads soooo slow); the people never 'sound' the same in an audiobook.

Often for me my mind will wander if I just listen to an audio book if I'm trying to do stuff sometimes I get distracted with what I'm doing and miss parts of it. But I have a few times. Once in school we listened and read the book. (Night) I voted other because to me it depends. How much are you really listening to what is going on? (It can happen in reading too... when you get sleepy or a little tired of reading but keep going any way you're not paying as close attention as you could) Basically are comprehending what's going on? Most of the time its the same words same story just you process it slightly different than you would if you were reading it visually. I remember listening to my Mom read to me when I was little. We would lie in her bed for hours while she read to me. I'd often close my eyes and imagine the story happening. That's all an audio book is really. Is it the same.... I dunno its a different process but you still know the story.

I think that they are the same, but I often will say that I "experienced" a book rather then read it, however it does depend on the listener (readers) motive, some people listen to just pass the time while others listen for the story. Granted if one is just interested in passing time and not really paying attention it shouldn't count, other then that it should count. I wouldn't have experienced even 10% of the stories that I listened to had I not listened to them in my car, but even then if I find myself distracted I stop listening, (sometimes I will replay a portion if I find my mind wandering for a second) on the other hand I have gotten so wrapped up in the story line that I just listened to it while doing nothing else. In some ways audio books are better then reading since one can focus on the content without dealing with the mechanics of reading. While with reading one can too easily skim across the pages and skip or misread words. So to each their own.

I listen to audiobooks when I'm driving. Because of my job, this often works out to several hours/day, and I go through quite a lot of books. When I write blog reviews for books that I listened to I try and remember to specify that I listened to the audiobook, then go on with the review. I do "count" them as books that I've read though. Unfortunately my car is old enough that I only have a cassette player, and my library doesn't order very many new books on cassette. Driving is pretty much the only time that I can listen to audiobooks and NOT zone out, although I haven't tried them while working out.

I have used an FM modulator, and it is really hit or miss. Most times it is good, but some areas just have too much interference. So, I swapped out my stereo for one with auxiliary in.

That's why we got (I think it's called) an in-line modulator. Even if the radio station on that frequency has a strong signal, the in-line modulator will totally bypass it.

That's the type I used as well -- essentially an FM transmitter rather than modulator. They are much better, but once in a while they do still get interference. In my case, there was one intersection where it always happened and it drove me nuts, especially because it was one I would sometimes have to sit at for a while. It really depends on how strong the signal from the "real" station is, and if it's strong enough it can bleed in. Unplugging the actual antenna would help, but then you wouldn't get any stations.

If you have a rear-window antenna loop, the FM units have some troubles. We have issues with the FM transmitter sitting in the front of the van and reaching the back antenna loop. So a lot of times we just use the good old cassette adapter to play MP3 and CD players through the car stereo.

If I were in school and was supposed to read a book for an English lit class, I would have to read that book, because it usually includes the whole experience of reading. Further, I would not have allowed my children, who are capable readers, to listen to a book, instead of reading it, for an English class. However, I really struggle with reading. Even on CW, I often struggle with reading a post through. I have ADD, and reading is a major struggle. I have learned that if I read a book while listening to it, I will be able to focus far better. Just listening or just reading, unless I am studying, is very, very difficult. Some of us have struggles that make reading difficult. I have long been interested in Ta_mosquito's signature: LibriVox: acoustical liberation of books in the public domain I need to check that out.

I have "read" many books on tape and CD and I have to say the experience is the same. I remember referring back to a story I "read", "The Green Mile" by Stephen King and pulled different text and quotes from it but distinctly remembered I hadn't actually read the book so I couldn't remember how I knew it. Finally it dawned on me that I actually listened to it and retained it the same way I would have if I had read it. I think a lot of it has to do with retention. I love to read, but I am an audio learner so either way works for me.

Call me a purist, but I think reading the book with your eyes gives an entirely different experience than listening to it. I'll listen to a book on CD if I'm on a long trip. Otherwise I have to see the print.

The first book I ever heard was Steinbeck's Travels with Charley. i was thrilled! We were traveling from Minneapolis to Maryland.

One thing I realized today -- when I listen to a book there are some names I don't quite know how to spell or exactly what they are because it's a name I've never heard before. OTOH, when I read a book I often come across names I don't know how to pronounce, so I guess it's even.

I listened to A Thousand Splendid Suns and would have had MAJOR troubles with many of the pronunciations and with keeping names straight. Having someone read them to me made that so much easier.
