I think the packaging states, "undergarment." So...wear them under a garment.

please

Whether or not you know it, the history of the “wife beater” goes back to the Middle Ages, where knights who lost their armor in battles often had nothing but the chain-mail undergarment to protect them. Now, those chain mail undershirts, if you will, were (edited) strong — even a sword couldn’t get through. Often, when a knight lost their armor and continued to fight successfully, they were referred to as a waif beater (waif, referring to an abandoned or lost individual). Due to the fact that knights who had been abandoned and continued to fight with only the “shirt off their back” (albeit chain mail), they were given this noble title — an abandoned fighter, beating their way through battle.

That's an interesting explanation, but since it's only linked to a blog and not a dictionary, I'd hazard a guess that it was made up out of whole cloth. It just sounds way too coincidental to me. I don't know about Old French (where the word waif comes from), but I'm pretty sure it wasn't used in Old English; I'd have to look it up in the multi-volume Oxford dictionary to be sure.

But to stay on topic, I don't think they work as outerwear any more than corsets do for women. And I hate the nickname too.

They are not appropriate for wearing in public, and IMO, they are only appropriate under casual shirts. If your wearing a dress shirt, especially a white one, PLEASE wear a proper undershirt.

Manda, the fabric that your "white vests" are made from is different. It's more of a real cotton knit. "Wife Beaters" are made from a cotton knit as well, but it's ribbed which makes it stretch out, lose it's shape, and get nasty looking. My dad travels to London for business and always brings back a plethora of white vests for the guys in the family because the fabric is much nicer.

I guess I understand what everyone is mostly saying here and I personally don't wear wife-beaters (at all). But I also feel maybe some have forgotten/missed the fact that they are a type of fashion style for some people these days. Looking through magazines or watching MTV, etc. you'll see young men wearing them with jeans. They are sometimes worn to show off a tight body and/or give off an urban/thug/gangster-ish type of "cool" look.

I know they still genearlly get a bad rap and are often associated with unkempt, violent, and otherwise unsavory characters, but I do think there is a small portion of people (usually younger in age) for whom the wife-beater is a fashion item. That's where it can be tricky. For some segments of the population, I'm guessing these are very cool looking.

And for women, there seems to be less fuss about them wearing one versus a male. Not disagreeing with anyone's posts here. Just wanted to point out that the wife-beater does seem to have an appeal for some people.

I've seen guys where them out to the local corner market and also in the mall and at theh movie theatre.

It seems lots of young people wear them these days. Some men actually look "good" in them, but most - well, not so much.

I had not actually heard them called "wife" beaters, just "beaters" . Nasty "nick-name"... .

A friends 18 yr old daughter wears them pretty much all the time - under a shirt or sweater that otherwise would plunge too far down in front (like so many see to do these days) and be less than modest! Probably one of the better uses for them, imo.

not only are they tacky except for working in the yard, I hate that nick name.

I really hate the nick-name too. It's pretty disrespectful and crude and even gives people who wear them a negative image (by association). Not all people who wear these tops are wife-beaters, nor do they engage in some kind of socially reprehensible behavior.

I think the name is disgusting, and I lose respect for people who call them that. For that reason, I refuse to see who has called them that here by running the name side off the screen so I won't see it. I just HATE that term!

My darling only wears "wife-beaters" under his t-shirts and that is it. He doesn't wear them around the house or to sleep in. If he EVER tried to leave the house wearing just that I would.....I don't know what I would do but it wouldn't be pretty. LOL!

I live in Northern NY so it never really gets that hot out in the summer, but if it does I still think it is nasty looking to see a guy in a tank top or wife-beater.

Ever watch an episode of Cops? They go on a call from some chic that got slapped around by her man and the cops pull up to some run down red-kneck trailer and the girl comes out crying with a black eye and her man then comes out in a dirty white tank top (aka wife-beater) holding a can of beer and smoking a cigarette. That to me is where the term "wife-beater" came from.

Just because something is fashionable doesn't mean it is reasonable to wear. Fashion is fickle, sometimes ugly, and sometimes stupid. Some of the plaids I'm seeing for this season make my eyes hurt. Egads!

Among the things my sons will never wear while under our roof are "wife-beaters" as a fashion statment, and pants hung so low that the casual observer can see the hemline of their boxers.
