I tend to self-examine when I am in the shower....about once a week or so. I do it standing up then (obviously) and with them soaped up....the soap helps you to feel deeper into the tissue and can help you be able to discriminate between what lumps are "part of you" and what lumps are not normal or have changed. I also examine in front of the bathroom mirror about once a month (give or take) and do a lay down exam about that often.

I am not faithful about the second two....at least not monthly...but I do tend to do them every other month or so.

My mom had a benign lump when I was in 6th grade...she went in right away and our family doctor said something that has stuck with me every since. He said that he would rather women come in right away if they feel something that doesn't seem right...too often they don't...because they are afraid it will be cancer...and often times what started out as a benign cyst..become cancer because they ignore it....

Voted Examine, but not monthly.

Looks like I missed a couple of polls. We always go to a carnival at our church on H'ween night (they have a dozen or so booths with games set up and candy to hand out, also pony rides, moon bounces, petting zoo, drama/dance/puppet shows, concessions, and a preschooler area) and have ever since our oldest was a baby. We always have a blast.

I love chocolate, especially milk chocolate, and especially with stuff in it - peanut butter, nuts, caramel, nougat, cherries...I'm not picky. Not a big fan of dark chocolate but as long as it's not bitter I'll eat it. "White chocolate" is way too sweet and yuk, except for WC chips in cookies or something. WC macademia nut cookies are good. Don't think I've had chocolate from another country.

I had one about 9 years ago when my doctor thought I had a rare form of breast cancer.

My mother had breast cancer in her 50's, so I have to start doing them when I turn 40. That was this year. I've contacted the clinic, but they haven't contacted me back yet.

I have not, but I'm only 29. Will probably have my baseline at 35, and then start yearly ones at 40.

When I worked in the xray department of a hospital, the radiologists strongly recommended getting a baseline mammo done at 35, to compare later years with.

Very strong history of breast cancer in my mom's family, so I had a baseline done at age 32 or 33, can't remember now how long ago it was. I'm 35 now so I'm sure the doc will be wanting to schedule me another one at my next appointment as she wanted me to have one done every couple of years.

The mammo itself didn't hurt (although it was uncomfortable just hanging around chatting while basically topless) but being short I had to really stretch up on my tiptoes a lot to be in the right position. That wasn't fun.

I had a baseline done back in 2003. I was 34. It was doctor ordered because of some concerns she had. No problems via the mammogram or the subsequent ultra sound.

Had another in 2004. Then I skipped a few years - insurance issues, as well as other excuses.

Got another one done just a week ago yesterday, as I turned 40 this year and the doctor requested I get another one done. I will make a point of doing so from here on out.

Blessings,

Garsy

eta- Moms - we need to teach our daughters early on as well, to do their self exams! As in their teens!!!!! I plan on educating my nearly 12 year old very soon!

Never had a mammogram; not 35 yet. My doctor oddly enough said that if you've never self-examined, starting now isn't likely to make much difference. I think that's prob bc my tissue is so dense I can't feel all the way through it. I do want to do it soon, but they're so tender most of the time I can't bear it when I try.

Missed a few polls I need to weigh in on.

Chocolate... would have voted "love it!" and "allergic to it." Talk about a thorn in the flesh... it's a mild allergy so it's really really hard to resist when I know I won't feel it until TOM (and that's more caffeine sensitivity than allergy). As DH spent two years living in Belgium, I'd agree with peculiar_lady2; there's chocolate, and then there's Belgian chocolate.

Re Halloween, we gave out candy. We have piles of young kids in our neighborhood and I just cannot resist the toddlers, all dressed up, too shy to say anything. One little guy dressed as a spider; when his dad said "what do you say?" he said "cock-a-doodle-doo!" Too cute! I'd say we had about 120 kids--new development so lots of young families; also close to a country neighborhood where the houses are too far apart for ToT-ers.

Nope.......... believe me, I wish it did, then I wouldn't have to get mammograms done.

I had a one done a couple of years back when I found a lump in my breast. I'm not old enough to have routine ones.

I haven't had a mammogram, and breast cancer doesn't run in my family. I didn't think it was necessary for one till I am 40 (unless there are indicators of a problem). Does insurance pay for a baseline mammogram as some of you are recommending?

Nope doesn't matter. Even small breasted should have a mammogram. The machines can handle about anything.

My doctor ordered my first mammogram, and since it was ordered my insurance covered it.

Also ladies look into free and low cost mammograms - many many areas have these sorts of programs, often times started by friends of someone whom has lost their battle with breast cancer and would have had a better chance if they had access to screenings much earlier.

Blessings,

Garsy

Breast cancer runs in my family.

I had my first baseline this year. I'm 28.

My physician recommended I have a mammogram every 18 months, continue my yearly physicals and self-exams.

No problem.

Had a baseline at 38, maybe earlier and try to get them every 1 to 2 years. I've put it off a few times. I just had one in the spring. I do self checks. BC does not run in my family, but other cancers do, mainly as you get older.

I have not had one yet, I plan to ask my OB/GYN after the baby is born. Does anyone know if breastfeeding effects it they can do one? I thought it was a baseline at 40 and regular ones at 45 but it seems that might not be true. I will be 36 in December so I think it is time to find out what I should be doing.

No, Reach. Men get breast cancer, too.

Breastfeeding affects (changes) the breast tissue and makes it more difficult to 'read' the mammogram. I asked about it while I was nursing, and my midwife said I should not get one until I was done nursing.

I had my first mammogram this year, and I don't have to have another one for a while.

I voted No. Saw the question and thought 'I'm 28; ought to have about 20 years before I need to think of those things' then read all of you saying a baseline at 35...
I'm not so sure I will even be able to get one done when I hit whatever age; the thought alone makes me freeze up.
I missed yesterday's poll: I do self-exams but not monthly. Try to do them with my cycle but with starting classes a few months ago I'd completely forgotten. Have to start again!

Thanks, Myka. In that case I'll ask about a baseline in a couple of years - I plan to breastfeed for around a year to fifteen months so I'll just wait. I thought I had heard that the changes in breast tissue it made it harder to get an accurate reading. Nice to know I was on target with at least one aspect of mammograms!
