It was an emergency. His heartrate kept dropping every time I pushed, and each time it would take longer and longer to recover. Even as they rolled me into the OR, they were still watching his HR, and when they got him out his first Apgar score was a 4, so they had to bag him to help him breathe. But after a couple of minutes being bagged his second Apgar was a 9 so he was fine, but it definetly was scary.

wow...that is scary!!! Our first had a low apgar-2, then 3, then 5, then 8...it is very scary!! I am glad all of our others have had good apgars...even Justice wasn't too bad considering the cord prolapse issue.

My emergency C-section was for the same reason - foetal distress. Jonathan's heart rate dropped when I had a contraction and would take increasingly longer to recover. I was nowhere near pushing though - was only 4cm dilated. Maybe they did a vertical on you because your labour was further progressed and Dylan had perhaps started to descend.

evegirl, are you thinking of having any more children? It's just that after a vertical C-section, it's usually to have repeat C-sections.

Manda...over here they tend to do vertical only if they have to get baby out NOW and don't have the 3 minutes to do it the other way properly (from what I have heard, no personal experience of course).

That is what I understand as well. Vertical means baby must be out NOW.

Yup...I third that opinion.

Speaking of incisions...I'm shocked how well mine is healing. I just wish it were not so itchy... But, I know it is temporary.

Yes I realise that - I was just curious because the reason for the section was the same as mine (and I didn't have a vertical).

Obviously the specifics just were a bit different. My cousin's wife had to be vertically cut for one of hers...a long time ago though, but that's what we were told...they didn't have 3 minutes to get it done properly the horizontal way.

Glad you are healing well Sharon!!! (I hate that itching from stuff when it is healing too...I can imagine it would be much worse with your kind of incision then with my little cuts or whatever. It about drove my hubby batty when he had to have 9 staples in his head...he wanted to scratch SOOOOOOOO bad and he couldn't even wear a hat to keep him from reaching up and touching it all the time.)

Well, just because I haven't caused any trouble for awhile.... The vertical incision is not always for emergencies. I had one due to other issues not related to childbirth at all. I am, however, the very, very rare exception to that rule. But emergency or no, it still means I am not a candidate for VBAC. Hence the scheduled c-section. One thing to note if anyone ever finds themselves in my position - it is possible for them to do a vertical abdominal incision and a horizontal uterine one, but you will probably have to ask/specify that. And I have no idea if there are specific criteria, just read in several places that it is worth asking about because it is primarily the type and location of the uterine cut that determines if you can try a VBAC rather than the external one. Just something I wish I had thought about at the time.

The only real itching I had was from the pubic hair regrowing, but a little baby oil took care of that. Not much itching at all from the wound. Once it's dried out, you can use baby oil on that too, Sharon.

At this moment, I am taking it day-by-day. Yesterday I wanted to have more, today its a no. LOL My husband is so confused, he is fine with whatever God decides for us. So if I end up pregnant sometime in the future, then it was meant to be.

Manda- I was fully dialated and I pushed for 30+ minutes. He started to descend, but just didnt wanna come out that way. I dont think it helped for my body to be in labor a full 2 days before I had him, I think it was too tired to help push him out. Maybe it was a good thing I did have a C.

Oh golly gee the itching is terrible! Mine is finally not itching as bad, but I still have the part that is raw and where they cut the stitch out on monday, so I am sure that will itch when it finally heals!

Jamie, I can relate. I was in labour for two days before I had Jonathan (by emergency caesarean), and also with Sarah too (I had a VBAC, but by ventouse, due to "maternal exhaustion").

David's first APGAR was a 1. I have never been so scared in my life. By 5 minutes it was a 9. James was born with a perfect 10/10 I think. My mom, Chris and I had to figure out his score because the midwife wasn't here yet.

If James occasionally sleeps a 6-8 hour stretch at night I will probably get my PPAF soon, right? Yay for sleep!! for AF!!

I wouldn't count on it. I think it's different for each woman. My girl slept through the night from 2 to 6 months, up to 10+ hours a night, and mine didn't come back until recently.

And she sure ain't sleeping through the night tonight.

I think that depends on how your skin tends to scar. I had a very small cut 2 years ago when I was pregnant with Gabby, it only required 3 stitches, but it STILL itches. Not constantly anymore(that stopped after about a year ) but it does itch.

The scar itching is one of the bigger reasons I want to avoid a csection. Lame, I know.

Isaac's Apgar scores were 8 then 9 five minutes later. That was pretty impressive for a 28 weeker, it encouraged me. We were afraid because he was SO purple/blue when he was born but it was from bruising. Poor kid had black eyes for a month from it!

My PP AF came around 4 months or so and Isaac was still waking up 2-3 times a night. I think PPAF is so variable...

Gabby's were 7, then 9. When we saw her cord knot we expected them to be lower but she did pretty well.

It is very variable......even if one follows the LAM method of breastfeeding..it can return as early as 6 weeks after birth....or as late as 18 months after birth.

It actually is not as bad now since the doctor took off the strip things. You know what is irritating though? My stretch marks below the belly button. I'm having to put lotion on 3-4 times a day.
