It has been here for several months and is probably in most places by now. I'm not planning to get the shot. Every time I've ever taken one, I've had flu symptoms.

It seems to be hitting closer and closer to people I actually know. A good friend of mine told me, yesterday, that a mutual friend of ours has the swine flu. I was visably shocked! I hope she will be ok soon and I will not be seeing her until she is well.

1. Yes. (One friend in ICU, one neighbor died from it.)
2. Yes. (I'm in a high risk group: diabetes and asthma)
3. Yes... as soon as the shot is available. (I can't take the mist.)

* Yes, it's been here for awhile.
* Kind of. I'm a SAHW and I'm not around a lot of people on a daily basis. Since DH is, I know the dynamics could change in a heartbeat. A few people at his job have had the H1N1.
* No, and I don't think I will.

Oh and I forgot to add that I am probably not getting the shot. I am still doing my research on the vaccine. At this point, getting the vaccine seems to be worse on my health and my childrens than actually get the flu!

It is in my area, but what is this about people born before 1950 don't need it, because we are already immune? Anyone know about that? I wasn't going to get it anyway, but this was interesting.

I found this:
quote:

Although elderly patients are considered to be at an increased risk for complications of influenza, pandemic H1N1 influenza A infections in such individuals have been uncommon to date possibly as a result of preexisting immunity against antigenically similar influenza viruses that circulated prior to 1957 [34]. In one study, 39 of 115 (34 percent) of individuals born before 1950 had preexisting microneutralization titers ¡Ý80 against pandemic H1N1 influenza, whereas only 4 of 107 (4 percent) of individuals born after 1980 had titers ¡Ý40 [47]. Microneutralization titers ¡Ý80 to 160 in adults and ¡Ý40 in children often correlate with at least a 50 percent decrease in risk for influenza infection or disease, but whether these titers offer partial protection against pandemic H1N1 influenza A virus infection or disease is unclear [48].

My friend and 3 of her kids have the swine flu.
I dont know if I am going to get the shot or not it depends on if I can get to the doctors.

Yep, it's where I am, my sister had it last month. If I can get the shot I will since I have asthma, but I'm not going to worry too much because my sister has asthma too and didn't have a bad case. All in all though, the risks from the shot aren't nearly as common as the risks from getting the flu.

Exactly. Wikipedia has confirmed deaths at over 1,200 in the US, including over 80 children. No one has died from taking the flu vaccine, and it's very likely nobody will. If the H1N1 outbreak is the same as ordinary flu, then 30,000 people could die, and many times more will get seriously ill.

Unless you have a known allergy to flu vaccines, there really isn't any good safety reason not to get the vaccine. At most it could make you achy for a couple of days and give you a head ache. Still better than a full dose of the flu.

It's been around for months here. My son had symptoms mid-August and rapidly responded to Tamiflu, which is readily available (and free) here in the UK.

My husband and I went down with something on Monday which is not like a cold and not like (normal) flu. It could be just some virus or other, but it's nothing like either of us have had before, and we think we've possibly had a mild dose of swine flu, but are fine and almost completely well.

Yes. My home in fact.

Thankfully tho my little guy is on the mend after his fever spiked out at 102.9 yesterday. His temp this morning was 100 and it's down to normal now with only one dose of Tylenol today. The rest of us have been exposed already so if we get it we get it. I'll worry about it when it happens.

Blessings,

Garsy

Well, as of yesterday I was officially diagnosed. It's not the worst flu I've ever had...an outbreak two years ago was pretty bad. I didn't even run a fever this time; the body aches and gastro-intestinal symptoms were fairly bad at first; the nose and throat symptoms came on later in the process. The doctor said that he saw 39 cases yesterday; that it was not affecting most adults in their middle years too badly. It is the children and those with serious existing conditions that are being affected worse. DD#2 has asthma so I'll have to watch her carefully.

Not in my immediate area yet-though neither is the vaccine. I am on a waiting list at my PCP for h1n1 if and when they get some.

My kids pediatrician just cancelled their seasonal flu shots for Monday as they ran out of that-FORGET trying to get them the h1n1 vaccine. I got the seasonal flu vaccine @ my employer on Monday. They have a small amount of the h1n1 vaccine-but it is going to front line workers first. Pediatrics and ED workers can get it-so far their isnt enough supply to vaccinate the rest of the staff in mass.

O well-All we can do is wait and see. I'm hoping we can get the vaccine before it becomes widespread around my area-but if not-C'est La Vie.

Anyone have any suggestions for natural protection? Yea-I have read the basic common sense stuff-and my boss had passed along an email about gagrling with salt water or listerine...Anyone with a medical background hear about that one?

HisLamb,

I've heard something about Elderberry extract, and have started a thread in this folder to ask people about it. You might want to go and have a look (only one person has posted info about it so far).

Several kids at my kids' schools have had it, but not my family.

I've admitted at least one person with it, and we've had several on ICU.

No deaths so far.

Basically it's kicking off again and cases are accumulating.

No plans to have the shot - our unit only has enough for the A&E staff!

Yes, its hit our province anyway. I believe there have been some deaths.

I should get it as I'm asthmatic but someone showed me an article that says there's fish oil in it and I'm severely allergic to fish/shellfish.

My doctor's on vacation and I can't find a site that confirms/denies this article.

Even more frustrating is that all the clinics giving the shot are only open 10 to 4. My work won't give me the time off. And just to top it off, there are massive shortages of the vaccine.

I've had it and I've got it again.. exact same symptoms... and feeling worse this time around.
My one daughter has also had it twice; second time not so bad. now it's just a mild fever and cough
Twin B has it now and so does the hubby.. three of us down and it's not pretty..
DD has the Gl symptoms and the fever.
Hubby has some GI symptoms, the fever, bad aches and the respiratory trouble.
Me.. No GI symptoms, but severe fever, full body aches, ear pain, horrible respiratory problems, chills, at night I have trouble breathing... etc..

I went to the emergency room last time and the unfortunate part is that Yes, I did get diagnosed with the H1N1 virus, but there is no way on this earth I can afford the prescriptions.. Plus with my stress levels being high, My immunity is down.. boo....

It's been here for a long time - since late summer. Mostly children.

I got the seasonal flu vaccine several weeks ago - no side effects at all.

I am worried and plan on staying home as much as possible, using hand sanitizer and trying to remind myself to keep my hands away from my face.

I would get the H1N1 vaccine, but I'm 61 and they say I don't need it. I think it went around in the 1970s and they think people my age already have immunity to it. I sure hope that they are right. I have no insurance and could not afford to see the Doctor, go the ER, or get medication for it.

Praying hard for protection.

Well it didnt take long for h1n1 to make its way a bit closer to home.

One of the Local EDs was loaded with it over the weekend (mostly people panicking rather than people deathly ill though.....)

My coworker and her 2 kids are home with it. Expecting it will be in my kids schools shortly if its not there already.

Now comes the question-Do I keep them home from school if a few students in the school call in with it?

I was just discussing this with my husband this morning....
