God is the Same in both the New and Old Testaments. We see His mercy played out in the old testament (Jonah) and His judgement in the New Testament (Revelation). He did not change His mind, we just tend to make a false distinction between God in the Old and the New Testaments.

Knight, you need to remember the fundamental difference between the Old and New Testaments. In the Old Testament, we see the historical and cultural writings of a single ethnic group (the Israelites). In the New Testament, we see mostly the religious writings of a multi-ethnic religious group (the believers in Christ). Also of note is that the Old Testament covers about 4000 years of human history (give or take a couple centuries) and the New Testament covers less than 100 years. What is all of that to say? God has not suddenly shifted his dealings with humanity.

The point of the entire Biblical Narrative is God's dealings with His people. Cities were leveled because of the sins of the nation. In the New Testament, people are condemned to Hell because of their sins. God did not stop judging sins, and God has not lost His zeal for Justice and Righteousness. Exhibit A: the Book of Revelation. Every time God dealt harshly with the Nations in the Old Testament, He said that it was because of that nation's sin, and that if they had repented then He would have relented. The point of Jesus' coming to the earth was to perfectly fulfill the law, that humans may be saved through Him. It isn't that Jesus is shielding us from "Big Bad God", it is that "Big Bad God" came to the Earth that He may save as many of us as possible. Why? Because if He was to mark the sins of all, none would stand. It is the Love of God that drove Him to judge sins in the Old Testament, and it is the Love of God that drove Him to judge sins on the cross.

Adam
