I thought thought this would be a fun poll. Most of the debates on modestly here usually run the same course, and I get bored with the usual back-forth of "we shouldn't let our breasts hang out" followed by "I suppose you think women should all wear burkas." I don't want this to be another debate, so I want to discuss what you feel comfortable with on two middle-ground areas--knees and shoulders. Probably most of us would agree that showing our wrists, elbows, ankles, and toes will not cause men to stumble. (A few may disagree.) Probably most us would agree that showing our breasts, tummies, and rear ends are not a good idea. (Again, some may disagree.) But what about your shoulders and your knees? These are probably the areas where most Christians split. Do you personally feel comfortable baring your shoulders and your knees to the world?

I must agree with solo_soprano. It is all about having class and self respect. I don't mind exposing either.

I feel uncomfortabke about showing knees when I am out, but shoulders are OK for me. However those clothes that have no straps look really immodest, as if they are just about to slip down, and those that have tiny tiny straps are a bit immodest in my opinion. I dont think that many men find the upper arms exciting do they?

I have sleeveless and strapless things and a few things that touch my kneecaps. I have one or two pairs of shorts that are mid-thigh. I'm comfortable in either. I don't wear my strapless dresses to church without a jacket or something so as not to improperly draw attention to myself or offend anyone, but I wore them on our anniversary cruise recently and loved feeling so feminine in those pretty dresses while on my hubby's arm. I only choose classy/elegant things, not trashy-looking things.

I don't have a problem with showing the knees or shoulders. It's just the way I am built. I would like to wear cuter summer shirts but they never fit right so I end up mostly wearing t shirts or polos. I don't have a problem with my legs, but they can often be dry. Like Elena my thighs need to be covered up now.. I am not that heavy but I have a lot of cellulite which might not go away.

Since I'm heavier I prefer to have my shoulders/upper arms covered. I'm skeered I'll wallop some poor unsuspecting child with the wobbly thing under my arms. I don't mind showing my knees but at church I do prefer to have them covered with capris or a skirt. I am not too fond of spaghetti straps in church either. To me it shows too much skin which isn't very appropriate.

I voted both. If it is a skirt I am fine with just above the knee, most of my shorts are the same length but personally I could wear ones a bit shorter if I had nicer legs. Similar problem with shoulders, although I don't have a problems showing them per say - that is just not how my body is designed. And frankly wearing a DD bra does not lend itself to strapless tops of any variety. Kris

I voted that I am comfortable showing my shoulders, but not my knees. I have several sleeveless shirts that I wear, even in church. Although I do own a couple of skirts that show my knees, I rarely wear them because it just makes me too self-conscious. I'm always checking to make sure my skirt didn't accidentally hike up, and I just can't be as relaxed and comfortable as I'd like to be. I don't even own any shorts.

I always thought showing shoulders *collarbones especially* was attractive. knees on the other hand?? only if I got the legs to go with it.. LOL some days I'd rather show my knees than my ankles!!

I can't be comfortable if I'm showing my knees; my sister gave me a skirt that's knee length and when sitting I'm constantly tugging at the thing to cover my knees. When younger (late teens) I didn't have a problem with longer shorts (that showed knees) and would occasionally wear sleeveless shirts but not anymore. I grew up hearing 'cover your elbows/knees/collarbone'. But I don't feel as embarrassed if my collarbone shows when wearing scoop neck shirts/dresses; and wearing short sleeves never bothers me. So... knees - no; shoulders - more than likely no.

Pretty much neither one. Personally I am not okay with sleeveless in church. I just don't like it, for me. I think I wore a tank top a couple time this past summer, but I was huge pregnant and durn hot LOL. Knees, 99% of the time, no. I have a knee length skirt I wear when I'm around the house in the summer, but I probably wouldn't wear it out.

I said no to both but more out of my appearance than modesty. There's no A/C in most places in Lebanon so in the summer I do wear sleeveless around the house and out if I run to the store. If I can find a sleeveless that doesn't show much around the arm holes that's fine too. I'll wear shorts that don't come to my knees but not much above. My thighs aren't called thunder thighs for nothin'! But I'm not one to flaunt what I've got even when it's not overweight. I'd much rather look attractive in something that shows off my figure (when I have one worth showing) without exposing it, KWIM?

I guess it really depends on the way the clothes are made and fit. I personally wouldn't mind wearing an outfit that bared my knees or shoulders, but I'd still look for something modest and classy. I've seen clothes that cover both body parts -- yet the outfit was too revealing and immodest.

I voted that I am fine with wearing something that shows my knees and shoulders. I wear shorts and tank tops. I don't think that strapless shirts or dresses are modest. (Unless a jacket is worn over all the time. That is just my opinion.) I have some tank tops that I can't decide if they are modest or not. They are not spaghetti straps but I can't decide. I asked some of my friends and they said that they weren't sure. I wore them a lot this summer. The issue is that they show a lot of skin on the shoulders and around my arms. What do the rest of you think about tank tops and how do you decide if they are modest or not?

For me, an off the shoulder dress (I probably won't do strapless even if I get skinny) would be a very rare, special occasion type of thing. And I don't actually wear tank tops or sleeveless shirts because most of the ones I have found are either too revealing on the sides or front for my comfort zone. I have a lot to work with up there and I'd rather err on the side of caution. And I prefer looser skirts so in general the "hike up" factor is less of a concern. I do find that most of the skirts I do buy (don't wear them often) are more likely to be just below the knee to mid-calf (oops, just typed mid-thigh!) then just above. I thought about it a bit more and wanted to add to what I said before. Kris

As long as "the ladies" aren't hanging out I'm alright showing my shoulders, and as long as I can bend over and not show my undergarments then I'm okay with showing my knees. I don't find shoulders or knees to be very sexy IMO.

I'm okay with both tank and strapless, but most of the time they have the same issue-- they show too much sometimes. I don't think any one of the types we've mentioned are inherently immodest, but they can be, depending on your build and how the article is cut. Just like McCain's daughter wore that tank that showed too much (I think it was a tank?)... I can totally wear the same top and not show anything. If I were extra blessed up there though, I might have let the tanks go, or find ones that have more coverage up top. I love wearing strapless, but I hate strapless bras...
