Nahum 1:3
The LORD is slow to anger, and great in power, and will not at all acquit the wicked: the LORD hath his way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet.
If just forgiving someone was as easy as..."0k youre off the hook". Then Jesus need not be crucified. But the problem lay in God will not be unjust or unrighteous. For God to vindicate his law and to honor Himself and his own perfect wisdom in decreeing such laws, justice must be delivered, punishment must be executed. God was not simply going to...."forget about it". An immense amount of wrath was stored up against us and justice had sharpened its sword to spill our blood. No, God was not going to acquit the wicked. Jesus Christ redeemed us, purchased us, washed us clean by his own blood, he drank down the wrath of God that was waiting for us to drink. God cannot forgive sin on the basis of annuling his laws and side stepping his justice. Either Jesus or ourselves must be punished and receive the full mixture of God's wrath for the sins weve committed.

Well when you put it that way it makes sense. You should not have used the word "forgive" then. What you were talking about was not forgiveness but letting people off the hook. No, God does not do that and neither should we. Forgiveness is different from that.

He did so in accordance to His Law. And Jesus came to make the Law complete.
To simply put, it is so because it's the only legal way.
