L'enfer (Hell)
Not to be confused with the other Claude Chabrol-directed film Emmanuelle Beart also starred in, it's an unnerving story about how 3 sisters with their own relationship "issues" (i.e, the oldest one married mother of 2 trying to deal with her philandering photographer husband, the youngest trying to confront her adulterous relationship with a much older--and very much married Sorbonne professor/father of a collegiate-aged daughter, and a middle sister with issues I can't quite get at the moment). Each of these sisters have their private tragedies, linked back to that moment in their family history when one of them witnessed their dad in some compromising position with an underage girl or even boy(!) 
I could describe more, but that will be giving too much of the plot away. I have to admit that it's the star power of Emmanuelle Beart and Marie Gillain that first got to my viewing interest, BUT considering that it's a Danis Tanovic-directed effort, of a Krystof Kieszlowski script(!), I just felt that it didn't quite have the same Polish-Catholic touch as the late master himself (Kieszlowski)... No disrespect to Tanovic...*
*He helmed the Bosnian War black comedy, No Man's Land...

Le Scaphandre et le Papillon (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly). Absolutely loved it. It's about a man suffering from locked-in syndrome; he's paralyzed from head to toe and can only communicate by blinking, but he decides to write a book (by blinking, with someone to transcribe). You'd think it would be depressing but I found it tremendously moving and even uplifting.
ETA: based on a true story; the man really did write a book (same title). Yet another book I must go check out...

the brothers bloom. fun. pretty 'meta' (i.e. self-referential) - it's about con-men and games, fiction and drama, storytelling, truth, the search for identity, the creative process, love...quite enjoyable (and it doesn't hurt to have the delectable rachel weisz, either). not great, but better than good -- 3.5/5

Disney's new Christmas Carol in 3D.
It was a bit on the dark side, I wouldn't let kids under age 8 see it. Personification of Want and Ignorance in the form of two scary demon-children at one point, and the Ghost of Christmas Future.
Those points worked, just not for kids. Acting was good, it was funny, and the only hokey part was "God bless us, every one!" but mostly because you know it's coming. It's definitely worth your money to go see.
And jeez, I always forget this line, it choked me up mid-film. Cratchet's telling the family about Tiny Tim at church, something to the effect of "He wanted to take his crutch, said that it might help people remember him as made the lame walk and the blind see." Man, that's good.

It was a good line because that's one bit of Dickens' dialogue that they didn't mess with.
I always find it ironic that a story that was originally considered quite scandalous (for being a Christmas story which makes no mention of Jesus' name) has become so closely associated with the holiday. The line you quoted is as close as Dickens got to mentioning the true meaning of Christmas.

Dark City
'Finally had the chance to watch this visionary film--albeit the 2nd half of the film on TV. I have to say that it's extremely impressive with not only the visual FX, but likewise with the storytelling. It kind of boggles the mind how much creativity was maximized with an even more mind-boggling high budget to match!
*though I don't know what to say about the 1930's-1940's, film noir motif, but I guess it matches the thematic decor...

If you're seeking some great fiction with awesome special effects, this film is for you. The storyline wasn't too productive, and they could've made the movie a bit shorter but overall this was a fun movie to watch.

hubby and I watched Grosse Point Blank last night.. (stars John Cusack & Minnie Driver) anyways.. by the end, we felt old.. LOL

Ghosts of Girlfriends Past. It was ok, while it started out fairly strong, it got rather boring fairly quickly. I guess that it is more of a chick flick.

Quirky, CGI-laden, samurai-fantasy epic involving a warrior on a quest to slay 48 demons, so as to regain all 48 of his body parts lost after his warlord father sold the latter self, to some devils, so as to maintain power (over his fiefdom). The entire film, for all its oft-profanity-laced dialogue, and some computer-generated splatter, feels too much like some silly kiddie movie by Western, R-rated standards!

Anyone going to see Prescious(sp?) tonight or this weekend. Oprah had the young lady who plays her on this morning and I really liked her.

I read the book "Push" which Precious is based on. What I will say is that it's the 1st book I can ever remember emotionally detatching from almost immediately when reading, and I'm glad that I did considering how the story compounds. While they're touting Precious as an uplifting movie, If they stayed true to the book I don't see how that can be. I'll eventually see the movie, I just don't know when.
I just saw:
Frozen River - I thought this movie was going to be depressing, but it's a really good drama.
Married Life - The acting was really good in this drama set in the 1940's.
Redemption - about the guy who started the gang the "Crips" who was on death row.
