Maybe I'm just reading too much into it, but I thought the blinking has something to do with being reptiles. I thought they meant it to be off. Like they've done all this to disguise themselves, but can't help the blinking.

Wasn't that how you could the difference between Visitor and human? Or am I not remembering it correctly?

Ok, I wanted to be sure I wasn't the only one who remembered that! I wonder why they don't have that reverbation in their voices in the new series...

Just watched the pilot. I liked it. It moved very quickly, but the story has never really been about going into details about the visitor's history, rather, the story kind of starts once the premise of "aliens arrive, aliens promise peace, aliens inspire devotion in some and suspicion in others, aliens begin taking over". Once THAT is established, the actual story of the resistance begins. I think it is hilarious how all the liberal kooks are insisting that the series is a "dis" on the Obama administration. In a way they have a point: a duplicitous creepy alien leader arrives promising hope, change, and universal health care, manages to dupe throngs of adoring and gullible crowds, but is in reality bent on the destruction of life as humanity knows it. I found the reply of one of the show's producers hilarious: "Umm.. it is a TV show about spaceships."

LOL -- from reading the conservative "kook" forums there's no shortage of right-wingers who are convinced this *is* a dis of Obama. But then, since they already believe that President Obama has covered all the bases from communism to fascism, that's not really too surprising.

I too enjoyed the fact that they fast-forwarded through the whole mice eating, gee-whiz its an alien, kind of thing. It is clear that this show is going to move beyond the old V very quickly, which I like. There will be the focus on the resistance movement - and the whole idea that V's have been on the planet for a long time will open up a whole angle - you don't really know who could be a V and who isn't. A lot of the supposed "political references" I thought had less to do with the current administration (or any previous administration) but rather seems to be a way to help draw the general audience into the storyline. In the past, it seemed to me that many sci-fi shows failed to attract a large audience - and therefore lasted maybe a season or two. Yet now, we are finding quite a few successful sci fi shows, but many of them are entering through the back door - in a sense. Like, Lost is all about time travel - but we didn't discover that until season 4. People who never watch sci-fi found themselves watching Lost - why? Because the focus wasn't so much on "wow - let's have yet another discussion about how contaminating the time-line could result in a series of unexplained pyrotechnic explosions because the present world is in the process of being destroyed - so maybe we shouldn't stop by to chat with our great, great, great grandfather ..." Instead the emphasis is on strong characters, plot, and always the slow, lazy unfolding of a complex storyline that has deep backstory - the J. J. Abrams formula. I think this is what is happening with Fast Forward too - the unexplained mystery, the cliff hangers, and of course good actors. V has promise - good actors, clear protagonists and antagonists, questions already that need to be resolved, and more. And it is set in the present day - we don't need to worry about silver jumpsuits or unfamiliar territory. Setting it now, amidst the turmoil that is presently occuring throughout the globe (although, it does seem that the economy in many other countries is starting to rebound - particularly in China, India and Brazil) gives us a recognizable starting point that makes the show seem less "alien" and helps us to be more receptive to it. If anything, I saw V as being more a show about religion and devotion - and particularly an examination of Christianity - from a more worldly point of view. There were so many images of Christ - the crucifix falling and almost crushing someone who was narrowly moved out of the way by the priest. The dwarfed statue of Christ in Sao Paulo, Brazil as the V ship hovered above. The church itself which featured prominently in several scenes. The priest who asks tough questions - isn't worried about how many people are in church, but is worried about the people themselves. His questioning of the vatican. The miracle healings. The last line even - that the greatest weapon of the V is "devotion." Religion also features prominently in Fast Forward as well - this idea that the entire world has become prophets ...

I interpreted the devotion angle as how people can make people in authority into objects of devotion, especially if they appear attractive and say what we want to hear. Which is a commentary on the political environment this previous year. Just because the writers may have used this angle doesn't mean that they are necessarily right-wing. Saturday Night Live has poked fun at Obama (and they have absolutely skewered Joe Biden) a number of times this season, but I suspect most of the writers would vote for whatever candidate is most liberal.

Christianity Today has an interview with Jeffery Bell (exec. producer of V, and was also involved with X-Files, Buffy and Angel). Personally, I think he's playing coy about the Obama thing. There are people who really want to politicize this show, but that isn't our intention. We're just trying to tell good stories with arguments on both sides. What is interesting to us is that America—under Bush or Obama—is the giant imperialistic force imposing itself around the world for good or bad. In our story, humans are the colonials and the Vs are showing up as the imperials; we're the locals and the giant Roman army has just shown up in motherships above us. But here, that imposing force isn't taking over by force. Instead, the Vs come with a hidden agenda cloaked in hope, promise and peace.
