We're having an ant infestation here. Joe had some wrappers in his garbage can that drew them downstairs and I have a bunch in the kitchen too. Usually I can put out the Terro and they stay in that area, eat it up and die in a day or two. This group is spreading out everywhere, so I resorted to ant spray today.

I forgot to tell everyone the good news. Our little Josiah James was born on Tuesday, we just got home Friday afternoon. He was 6 lbs, 7 oz, 19 1/2 inches long. Born by emergency C-section...but doing great health wise now!!

Annie, I picked a bad time to take a Facebook break, I didn't find out about your newest family member until yesterday. Congratulations!

I will be off in 59 minutes . . . not that I'm counting or anything.

Then I'm going to Melissa's to sleep and hang out and drink coffee!

Then I go back for another 12 hour shift.

Rinse and repeat . . .

Ewwww What kind of work do you do? (12 hrs is too long to do anything IMO).

I hope so too, Donna. I hate any creature in that particular family of God's creation.

Well I'm home from church sick. I think it's bronchitis. Blech. If I'm still sick tomorow then I have to go see my doctor in this funky weather. I doubt if he'll subscribe over the phone this time, as I have one teen with the flu and one with bronchitis and he'll probably want to test to know which one I contracted.

My dd seems to be making better decisions, everyone. But keep praying for her when you think of her. She's not really plugged in to any Christian group at her new college, and the absence of yucky ex-bf is not enough. If she doesn't fill her heart with love for the Lord, she'll just replace yucky ex-bf with some other unsatisfying relationship.

And on this topic, I appreciate the honesty here! I thought that marrying into a missionary/preacher family there would be great value on things like honesty, compassion, mercy, grace, love for the brethren, etc. Finally, I thought, I am part of a family that loves with agape love.

I have been so disappointed. Not being churched much, I didn't realize that a whole lot of Christians substitute an outward appearance of righteousness for the heart level stuff. I couldn't ask my husband's family to pray for us when we were going through the thick of it, because no one would've really cared except for an opportunity to put me down (I'm the only one in the family not from good religious stock) and blame it all on me. So sad.

But this forum has provided me with much Christian love and support, and I appreciate you all so much.

I wonder about my nieces and nephews. I wonder if they ever went through rebellious times like my daughter, and they felt compelled to cover it up like I did? I know my husband and his brothers are messed up emotionally by being sent to boarding school at such an early age while their parents worked in the jungle. It's obvious by all the passive-aggressive disrespect when their parents really need them to step up and help.

Yet no one will ever, ever discuss it amongst themselves or their parents, NEVER! It was presented to them as children that it was God's will and the parents have to love God more than anything and how can a Christian kid ever disagree with that or even question it?

Funny thing, that jungle ministry never bore any fruit. Not one believer, the translation work they did is lost forever. All that suffering for nothing.

Oh my goodness. What a sad story, Shadow. Live and learn. I have a friend who grew up in a boarding school in Peru where her parents were missionaries. I hope that isn't common anymore. I've heard of a lot of missionaries that homeschool, but I don't know if that's because we homeschoool and know about missionary homeschool families or if it has become the norm.

My grandfather held a lot of resentment for his parents. Grandpa was born in Canada in 1913. His parents were from England. Many English sent their children back to England to be educated. When Grandpa was eight, his parents sent both him and his brother to live with their paternal grandparents until they graduated from high school. When they got back, their parents expected them to fully take care of themselves and offered no real help. When my great-grandfather got old and needed help, Grandpa and his brother were not very happy about having to care for him whom they had felt deserted by as children. I know we all make mistakes as parents, but I sure hope my mistakes are minor in comparison. I do not want to bring such harm to my children.

There was a big push on college campuses at the time my in-laws were attending, to follow in Jim Elliot's footsteps. It was the heroic thing to do at the time.

I think it is still very controversial to home school on the mission field. Many senior missionaries consider it a judgment against their decision to use boarding school. I have also heard resentment that somehow the mission is being cheated of the productivity the home schooling parent would otherwise be pouring into the mission. This from family members of my dh who were still in mission work in South America as recently as 1999.

So do pray for your home schooling missionary families. I know Mrs. DC is a home schooling missionary mom. Hi, Mrs. DC! Haven't seen you post for a while. Trust all is well down there in Mexico.

Yikes! Speaking of Mrs. DC I just saw on Yahoo! that there is a Cat 5 hurricane headed to her side of Mexico. I just posted in the prayer thread about it.

I was thinking of her in this discussion as well. Thanks for posting about the hurricane so we can pray.

I am working overnight tonight, and then I'm off for the next 3 days.

Thank God!

And please, if you love me, do not mention the word "flu" . . .

Homegrown, Congrats on the baby!!!

Ok, Cindy we love you so we won't even mention the word flY!!!!

Shadow, thanks for posting about missionary/ pk families.
This is weird and hard to explain. My daughter in law has a niece a few years younger than Ds. DIL is expecting and we went to the baby shower.
Ds started to ask if he could maybe date his sister in laws niece???
Well long story short they would never see each other but that's not the point of this post. I have been praying that if Ds meets someone that his future father in law would be a strong Christian...
The girl has a stepdad that would be the opposite of this BUT your post got me thinking about if and when God wants Ds to find the right girl, he will be in charge and lead them where he wants them- saved Father in law or not.

Cindy, my son has that which you do not want named, but he's doing okay. He started Tamiflu right away and he wears a mask all the time to keep my from catching it.

I thought I caught it anyway, cause I am way messed up. I have the worst case of bronchitis I've ever had. I thought it was the flu because my fever's were so high and I had nausea and headache, but the test came back negative for flu.

I really hope the antibiotics work. I DO NOT want to wind up with pneumonia.

Shadow, at least your Dr gave you antibiotics. I went to the ER and have bronchitis, too. The Dr said I didn't need antibiotics so I have been eating lots of Garlic..anyhow they gave me predisone and I am getting off that stuff asap. That stuff is just plain EVIL!! THEN the stupid Dr told me to take it all in one dose. Last night I had a nightmare and woke up with my heart beating like I had been running. It's supposed to help the bronchial tubes...I am never taking that junk again...

I just read that it makes it worse because it does something to the immune system. I am going to find a good VET the next time I get sick...

Oh judii I am so sorry about the bad instructions with the prednisone! But please taper off the dosage, don't just stop taking it. That can be deadly.

I have a prescription for prednisone too, but I won't start taking it until I quit coughing up signs of infection. The prednisone is to treat the inflammation that makes it hard to breathe, especially for me as an asthmatic.

Now my whole family is sick. My husband and my daughter in college both called today to say they aren't well. *sigh*

LOL Judii, my daughter just came back from the same doctor I saw yesterday. Diagnosis: mild bronchitis Rx: prednisone dose pack.

I'm sure there is some logic to it.

The Pred shrinks the inflamed bronchial tissue down allowing you to breathe better.

Pred is also an immune suppressant but needs to be taken as directed to be effective.

Many, if not most, inhalers for asthmatics are steroid based and do the same thing, open the airway to allow breathing better.

Judi, most Pred packs start with 5 pills and taper down over several days.. does yours?

Brandy, the most common inhalers people will see are the rescue inhalers- usually albuterol. In fact, I think only albuterol these days, but I'm not absolutely sure.

But yes the daily preventative inhalers almost all have corticosteriods in the mix- though not prednisone itself (Serevent does not have a steroid component- others do).

Prednisone is an oral corticosteroid, and yes it is an anti-inflammatory immune suppressing drug. It is usually given in short courses to help dampen the inflammation in the lungs after an infection. Or I have taken it with an antibiotic during an infection.

My guess is the doctor felt that the worst of judiis infection was over, and he wanted to reduce residual inflammation in her airways. And ditto for my daughter.

I've been taking this stuff forever, so don't get me going! LOL I could even go into a lengthy discourse about Addison's Disease, which is why you should never stop taking prednisone suddenly but always taper off.

It was supposed to be 3 pills for 3 days, 2 for 2 days and then 1 for 2 days.
I couldn't handle the 3 in a day..the stupid directions said take 3 at one time. I took 3 for 2 days, 1 1/2 for 2 days and a half a pill last night. I hope thats tapering enough.. I don't know if I will take the 1/2 tonight. It makes me feel sssooo weird. This morning I felt shaky or nervous or something like that...

Shadow, here is my recipe for antibiotics- raw garlic or some smashed in some tomato soup or chicken soup or something like that... I think it works better than a lot of stuff. BTW, what I totally DON"T get is that the Drs think you're a antibiotic NUT if ya ask for them. And HOW can they tell if something is bacterial OR viral if they DON"T do any tests????
Wonder how much they charged Blue Cross? Oh, and now that our insurance is coming from Government MOtors- our prescription copay went from $10 to $25. The stupid thing about that and I didn't realize it until the next day AFTER going to the pharmacy- I signed for the insurance AND then tried to figure out HOW they could charge the insurance IF I had the Scripts changed so that I could get 2 for $20 total for the medicines and not use the insurance!!!!!

My doctor gave us all flu tests. That's how I found out my son had the flu. I think they use symptoms after that to figure out viral or bacteria.

Colds usually start out with a temperature that goes away in a day or two, with lingering stuffy nose, sore throat and a cough mostly due to post-nasal drip.

If your fever starts after your initial symptoms and doesn't go away, it's probably a secondary bacterial infection. Also if your cough is productive, and the color goes from light yellowish to a darker green gray, my doctor prescribes antibiotics.

Of course he is extremely cautious with my lungs, and for very good reason. I have noticed the last year or so that my lungs fill with more fluid and I have a harder time coughing gunk out and it takes longer for my lungs to clear up after an infection.

I will start my prednisone after I stop coughing up colored gunk, and I will take it as prescribed- same directions as yours.

If you have not taken prednisone before, the nervousness, sleeplessness and rapid heartbeat are quite alarming. Your doctor should have warned you.

Also some doctors give more detailed directions- like take morning, noon and night for three days; then take morning and night for two days; then one tablet at noon for three days. But it is hard to get those kind of directions on a pill bottle! My pharmacist just puts "take as directed" on the bottle. The insert has more detailed instructions.

ps Thanks for the natural antibiotic recipe!

I have a natural cough syrup that works in a pinch. Chop one onion up finely. Add a cup of sugar and let it set until it has made a syrup. Take two to three teaspoons to suppress a cough so you can sleep.

I had to rely on this on vacation one night and it worked! I quit coughing and was able to go to sleep after having room service send me up sugar and onions. But they don't get too many requests in the kitchen for that combination!

By the way prednisone is also a plant derivative; in that aspect, a natural medicine.

I believe it was indigenous peoples using the plant in South America that brought its medicinal uses to the attention of Western attention. So I view prednisone as a good gift from God to help us breathe. It is also a major blessing to people suffering from lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and other autoimmune disorders.

Also, the reason you taper off prednisone is because prednisone just adds to your system more of something your body already makes. Your body will stop producing the hormone (cortisol? not sure) while you are taking prednisone. When you taper off, your body will again take over the natural production of the hormone.

My cat brought a mouse in with him this evening...he had it by it's tail end..alive. By the time I realized what he had done I could not grab him still holding on to the mouse and put them both back outside.

He watched it and tried to get it for a good hour, but now it is somewhere else in the house and I don't know where. It was a quite plump mouse that did not look hurt.

That cat better find that mouse!
