Ok.. So I did something pretty stupid.. My nipples were already sore a little bit from pms (this isn't a normal thing for me, only the second time it's been a real issue) and I made it worse. I was trying to see if I could find anything that would help.. and I tried hot water and cold water in the shower.. and it didn't help.. and I got kinda frustrated.. and Idk if I thought it would help or what, but when I dried off I rubbed them kinda vigorously with the towel.. (really stupid, I know.. I really don't know what I was thinking.. most likely I wasn't.. :P) Anyway, now they feel just absolutely raw. I'm putting neosporin on them, but is there anything else I should do? I don't know much abt breast health and I'm worried.. I did some research online. I never realized just how sensitive our breasts really are. So will they just get better after a little while? Or do I need to see a doctor?

I already know that I was really dumb to do that.. I really just wasn't thinking at all.. So please, I really don't need to be told that doing that was stupid.. PLEASE HELP! I'm kinda freaking out and I don't know who else to ask. (this is really, really embarrassing) Thanks ladies!

I don't think you were stupid, I think you were desparate. Neosporin is an antibiotic cream, right? It's probably best not to use that (only use any kind of antibiotic when there's an infection). You need to check, but it's probable that you'd do better with a cream/gel that contains painkiller (like ibuprofen gel). Arnica cream is an alternative cream and I use it all the time when I bash myself (I'm a clutz at heart!) to help with bruising and soreness. You should be able to find it at a good pharmacist or health food store.

If you have regular nipple/breast pain from pms, it may be worth speaking to your doctor about it. You may also want to look at your diet to see if any of the foods you are eating are causing problems.

If they are still very painful in a day or so, do go to your doctor.

I too would recommend you not using the Neosporin unless a doctor has told you to use it.

But I would suggest instead using Lansinoh, a lanolin product which breastfeeding mums use, which should be very soothing. Or calendula cream (herbal cream made from marigolds) or camomile cream.

ditto what Agapatos and manda said.

One thing you might consider is that, even though you are not nursing, you may have thrust ( yeast infection) on your nipples. This will often flare up during pms....it is easily treated however, but will require you talking to your doctor about the problem.

The hot water/cold water thing (as long as water wasn't scalding) is actually not a bad idea...what got you was the rubbing with the towel.

You might try (and I know this sounds funny, but it works!)...laying on the floor of your house where no one can see you with your shirt and bra off, exposing your nipples to the sunlight for about 10 minutes. This can help heal them, as well as fend off the spread of any fungal or bacterial infections until you can get seen by your physician.

Thrust? I'm guessing you made a typo and meant thrush... though I could be wrong! If that's so, you may want to try coconut oil. It's wonderful stuff and pretty cheap (when compared with creams for yeast infections). Works very well for all kinds of skin problems...

For thrush, I used acidophiles capsules. Not only would I take some orally, but I would crack one open and mix it with a tiny bit of water and put it on the affected areas.

Have you tried oragel? I wouldn't use it if they are raw (open), but just sore. I've never tried it, but I know some moms who pump and breastfeed who do that. (Not sure if it works.)

Not sure if you drink things with caffeine in them, but I've heard that caffeine can cause sore breasts.

Caffeine is a big part of making breast hurt. Cut that way down or out of your diet. Even at my age (long past menopause) I can tell when I have had to much caffeine.

I knew caffeine could cause breast tenderness, but I have never heard of it making the nipples themselves sore......

Another suggestion is to keep an eye on your nipples in general--if they are a bit dry they will probably be more prone to being sore. Changes of season are especially times to watch for that. Vaseline would be a good choice if you're not breastfeeding and can't find some of the other products mentioned. It's greasy of course, so it'd be better at bedtime, or before a shower.

When it comes to cutting out caffeine (if you decide that route is helpful), remember that means ALL caffeine. I had painfully sore and swollen boobs during PMS (we're talking swollen up one to two cup sizes!) and I never drink coffee, and barely drink tea. However, my occasional chocolate indulgence was causing the tenderness single-handedly... and all I was having was a chocolate pudding every day or two. It can take a couple of months after you cut caffeine to feel improvement... and one slip-up can make the soreness flare up again for months. It's not a fun place to be.
