Well, I'm not a doctor, but I had classmates in undergrad chem. and biology classes that were more like 40-50 years old, and they went on to grad./med. schools I think. You can do it.

I've known people who retired from one profession then went to grad school to pursue their passion.
However, if your goal is medical school, keep in mind that it's not merely graduate school. You also have the residency, etc. I think that it's up to 12 years of postgraduate work. The hours that medical residents work to get qualified are killer. It's not impossible for any age, but I've found that the older I get the harder it is to function on very little sleep--the break point seemed to be the transition from 30's to 40's.
The truth is you are the only one who can decide if it is too late for you to go to graduate school. However, keep in mind if God wants you in medical school, then that is where you should be. Simply keep in mind, when God's in the picture, even 90 year old women well past the age of child-bearing and 100 year old men can become parents....

Heck no!
I'm not a doctor, nor did I stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night, but it's never too late to get the degree you've been wanting.
IMHO, any profession will suffer if they only have kids straight out of college, with no life experience.
When I was in law school, our happiest (most successful) students were re-entry students.
While my fellow recent college grads and I were complaining about the killer work-load, these more "seasoned" students would say "You think reading 120 pages a night is stressful, try raising kids while working 2 jobs to pay a mortgage!!"
Perspective is a wonderful thing. All professions need it, and the medical field is no exception.

Absolutely not! But start working out now to get the endurance you'll need for residency. 72 hour shifts are the norm from what I hear.

My Dad still practices at 75 and will continue until he is physically or mentally unable to do so.

Too old to be a Physician? I'm not qualified to offer advice. But the title of the thread "35 too old for Grad School?" I probably won't be starting on my Masters until after I've hit 55. If we wind up in any of the same classes, I have no intention of sharing your worries about being too old. However, you are more than welcome to share my walker or cane as the need arises.

My family doctor was an engineer and then later in life decided to be a medical doctor. He looks he is close to retirement. His career change wasn't long ago.
Not a medical doctor, but I had a classmate at my second university back in the UK. He graduated at the age of 92 (really!!!).
What are you afraid of?

Never too old!
We have an attorney in town that didn't graduate from law school until her mid/late 40's. I also knew of a doctor that was finishing med school at the age of 60. She had a passion and she followed it. Her lifelong dream was to become a doctor and she did it.
If you have a passion then follow it.

Nope - I have 5 people in their 30s in my program, a few in their 40s, and one in his 50s...
Your knowledge of the real world and your experiences in your profession or even out of the profession (ie: if you're changing careers) will add a great amount of diversity and that is something truly valuable in graduate study.
So go for it,

35 is young!! ;)
my Dad is 56 and for the last 10 years he got his aa, ba ma in criminal law, but now he goes to embry riddle for aeronatical mechanics!!! he's way better at stuff like that anyway :)
anyways... what exactly do you want to study?? i think expanding your education is good no matter what your age... many blessings be upon you and i hope and pray God guides you and uses you for His glorious purposes!!! Godbless :)

Rich, unless you're not convinced yet.
Imagine if med school, residency, etc. takes an additional 10 years. You'll be 45 year old when you are out on your own. You've worked hard and reached your goal of becoming a physician. Now, imagine you choose not to follow your dream. You realize at the age of 45 that you could have realized that dream and you didn't take a chance.
Regardless of the time it takes: 5, 10, 15 years to become the person you want to be, you'll still be 40, 45, 50 with or without a M.D.

One of my friends has a son who is 32 or 33 (can't remember which) who has kicked around the medical profession in support or lower level medical positions. He is just starting his med school experience this semester. My friend says that the age thing is actually helping him in school but is worried about the amount of debt being accumulated and the number of years his son will have available as a physician to pay those loans back. Of course my friend is a CPS and CFP so he does think about money alot!
Go for it.

you took the question right out of my mouth. i'm 26 now but i'm forever in grad school and have been circling medicine like a crow for years now... it will probably take at least 10 years, i have to get the planning in GEAR before i graduate to make sure prereqs and the mcat are done and in order, i need volunteer and shadowing experience, and i need to really know it and feel it, because the adcoms will want to know why now, why this... i am minorly petrified of being way into debt, with no family because i somehow threw it away and didnt reserve my time to meet and build one by staying in my own field, and generally that i'm going to be alone and in debt and very very tired in the end. and have lots of cats, obviously. it's absolutely paralytic much of the time.
i say all that just in case any of my issues are yours, so you know its being felt all over :) but when it comes down to it, i read someone else's sentiment that basically says i'm going to be 45 (or whatever age, God willing) at some point anyway. i might as well be comfortable with the decisions i made and be doing what i want, even if i feel i went years out of the way doing whatever else. actually rereading allisonbrett stated what i'd read somewhere else too.
i'll save the rest of my personal baggage as to how to decide its the right decision seeing as this is post 1 for me, but feel free to talk to me and i recommend looking up the Student Doctor Network. their pre-allopathic forum has a non-trad student thread where you can get a lot of good advice and perspective on the idea of how to approach the idea.
