When I do buy books it's at a local Christian Book Store. I usually wait until the public library gets them. I save money that way. :P

Dencan.

It's a small used bookstore in the west end of Toronto, and the place looks like they just survived an earthquake. But if you know the place - and the system - you can find the neatest things. Digging in the chaos is fun and Eddie, the owner, can find anything.

As a bonus, unlike most used bookstores, it has only a very small adult section, positioned so you won't stumble into it by accident. I'd been a regular for a year or more before I realized what was in that back corner.

I order 99% of my books from amazon.com. Then, I give them to a friend who reads them and then gives them to her local thrift store.

Barnes and Nobles. I love to sit down and get coffee or tea and read for hours.

BArnes and noble is absurdly overpriced and they really don't carry the level of stock that they could to justify the prices. As big as their stores usually are in terms of area, they rarely have everything in stock that they could have. It's frustrating as they'll have every single book ever written by Dean Koontz and Stephen King, but rarely have less popular and more "literary" books. There is a huge one in the HARMAR mall in St Paul MN that is probably the best stocked of any that I've been too (they even have a used book section), but they still come up short at times, and most others I've been to don't have half the stuff they have.

Half Price books is definitely the most fun. You'll never find everything there that you want (all the times I went there to specifically find X book, I've always come up empty handed), but they are very good for browsing and impulse buying. If you have 10 dollars to burn you can do a considerable amount of damage too, as most of their books are in the 3-6 dollar range. I recently moved from an area that had a bunch of Half Price books to an area that has none, so I'm in withdrawal. I miss shopping there.

But the the best around (in terms of getting what you want for cheap) is probably Amazon's used books section, but they can take so long for shipping that it's kind of annoying (I've had problems where I order a book used from sellers there and don't get it for like 1 to 2 months, which is annoying).

The thing that frustrates me about Barnes & Noble is that they allow non-customers to use their stores like libraries. You'll see people sitting around reading entire books or magazines. I don't want to pay new book prices for books and magazines that are essentially used because they people to sit around reading them and even take them into the cafe area. One time my sister and I were shopping there and saw some books we wanted to buy. Rather than carry them around with us all day, we decided to stop back as we would be passing on our way home. I noticed a young guy reading a book in a chair on our first visit. Several hours later when we went back, the same guy was sitting in the same chair, still reading the same book. That's just obnoxious. It's also to the point that a real customer has trouble getting to certain shelves, particularly in the magazine section, becuase there are so many freeloaders standing around in the way.

One of the big advantages of amazon is that the new books are actually pristine and not shop worn.

I just discovered Alibris.com. Fantastic selection of books at some really good prices. Better than Amazon or Ebay.

Unfortunately, I have to say...Amazon.com

I like Barnes and Noble, and Borders but they rarely have the book I'm looking for in stock (I'm usually looking for classics), but I can always find the book I want, with several publisher options usually, at Amazon.

I don't have a credit card, so things like amazon and the like are out for me.

We have 2 national Christian bookstore chains in my city, but I only ever go to one. Koorong books.

Whoever has the best buy on the books I'm purchasing. That could be Amazon, Hastings, e-Bay, etc.

Since I read a lot I have discount cards at B & N, Boarders, and our local Christian book stores (3). I also use Christian Book Sellers (CBS) online and through their monthly adds. I have one entire wall in my home office full of books, read and about to be. I like to go to church yard sales because people sell some real classics. Regular yard sales usually have new age books and Yanni Cd's.

My fav. is Powell's. They have both new, and used. When I was a student, I got most of my textbooks there used. I than sold them back at the end of the semester. Their main location is HUGE (68,000 sq. ft.), and includes a rare book room. My hubby's fav. is their technical store (tech. books).

I shopped Powell's on line a few times. I even used their wish list and actually got two books that were on it.
