Think how hard it would be to run swinging your arms extended... So, why would we swing our arms while walking? I think it's natural to run with our arms bent, but to walk with them down by our sides and swinging. I do not feel natural to walk with my arms bent at a 90 degree angle, but will try it if I remember to. I'm usually in such deep thought in the mornings when I walk, the time goes by pretty quickly. I walk the same route in my neighborhood and barely notice anything. I'm a morning thinker. I solve a whole lot of the world's problems during my walks! :o) I have even thought of carrying a small recorder to talk into because I think of such good things, but forget them by the time I get home. (I could be "Einstein-walking" instead of dead-man walking!) he-he! You may not have this problem, but another thing bending my elbows eliminated was swollen hands from extended periods of keeping blood pooled in them. Of course, I swung my arms rather briskly as I walked.

I think the hip twisting movement occurs only when you walk like a "hardcore" racewalker, which is quite fast, and also bending the elbows 90 degrees when you walk too slowly makes the whole thing weird. I mean not only the looks but feels weird too. It's probably something I've been trying to do with my walking technique, find your optimum speed according to the following criteria: walk fast enough (maybe a heart rate monitor helps) so that your exercise is effective enough from the cardiovascular point of view, and can bend your elbows something like 90 degrees and make sure that your hips don't do excess movement. It takes some experimenting though. Granny, you may need to examine your hip pain from several angles, because sometimes hip pain masquerades like sciatica or joint pain (even arthritis), when in reality it is Piriformis Syndrome (piriformis in spasm). The piriformis muscle is a deep buttock muscle that runs across the middle of the butt (hence "pain in the butt"!). That muscle becomes knotted very easily with trigger points and needs regular stretching on both sides. I did a lot of research when I realized I had this problem. When it gets painful and it feels like I have a hip problem I do self-massage by rolling my butt over a tennis ball and that relaxes my piriformis. Here is something you can try and see if this helps: Piriformis Stretch Piriformis Stretch 2 Hope this helps.

Redjasper - very interesting. I am seeing a Chiropractor for injuries I received from a car accident. I was rear-ended by speeding teenagers. I was at a complete stop and they didn't stop - until they hit me. As soon as I got out of the car my lower back and left hip and down into my leg was hurting. I am much better now after months treatment. I also have FMS, so there are trigger points in my hip area too. If I can remember the name "Piriformis" I am going to ask my Doctor tomorrow.

I walked with my elbows bent today and couldn't tell any difference except the inner side of my elbows got sweaty and so did my underarms because I held my arms too close to my body to get any air circulation. I now have - let's see - four bandaids on my feet due to blisters. Gotta find some good shoes that aren't hot! Can't stand my feet to get hot. Actually makes me feel sick to my stomach. Weird, huh? (My daughter is the same way. But in a different context. When she was in labor the nurses would keep covering her feet with the sheet and she would throw up. As soon as she stuck her feet out from under the covers, the nausea went away. It would be funny if it wasn't so miserable for her.) I guess the Crocs rubbed my feet the wrong way too long, so now I'm hobbling and gotta get something before tomorrow morning. Think I'll buy some of those socks on eBay that you all were talking about. What was the name of them again? I'll look for that post.

Any sock that "wicks away moisture" should be fine for you. I run in Under Armour socks and love them, but there are a bazillion other companies that make wicking socks. Depending on where your blisters are, you might do well with Ininji socks: http://www.injinji.com/ Where are your blisters?

I bought my last pair at Costco. If you have one by you they are a lot cheaper. I think they are addias. I walked the last two days. Today is my rest day and I have some errands to do. Tomorrow is running or spinning at the gym.

I walked a milk around a parking lot today in about 21-24 minutes.

I am so glad you started this thread! My husband and I walk together about 3 times a week about 5 miles in a little over an hour. I love to walk- it makes me happy!

How do I get motivated when the going gets tough? Actually, I've found that that pushes me to workout. It gives me a chance to clear my mind, and focus on something else. I also like the feeling after I work out. Things seem a little better (like after a good nap). Listening to my power song also helps me because the words are so perfect. There are phrases like: "Though you want to quit, don't think you can't get through it. You've come to far to walk away"... "Though life may bring you down, it only matters if you let it". It's phrases like that, and many others from the song that help push me in part because it addresses the "I don't want to do this. I want to quit. I can't do this" feelings.

It is strange, but depression demotivates me to walk but walking lifts me out of depression. There have been many days that I just had no desire to walk but I would go through the motions of putting on my walking outfit and gone out the door with little motivation to go very far. But once I had gone a little way, my spirit was lifted and I would really get into the walk.

However, doing something can help us ~ especially if we acknowledge that we are stressed or our mood is low and give ourselves credit for doing something.
