Every woman handles labor differently. I have seen some women that really could handle the little pain they had very well...I mean, look at Erin...she didn't even know she was in labor. Some women have much more intense labor though, and I am one of those. Mine is always VERY intense and starts very suddenly...I never go from 10 or 15 down, I start at 3 minutes apart. I *don't* want to be nitpicky or start a debate , but not everyone who copes with labor naturally does it because they only have "a little pain". Gebre's was "a little pain". Biruk's hurt like the dickens. And all three were very intense. I know you didn't mean it that way, just wanted to point that out. It really is much more about how the body and mind handle it, and not the actual level of pain. If you're body goes wonky during natural labor, or you just don't want to deal with it, or it's emotionally traumatic, it's great that there are other options nowadays. It's kind of the same as saying if a woman wants a lot of children, it's only because pregnancy is a breeze for her, yk?

My labor with David was VERY intense. My contractions started 3-4 minutes apart. I also had back labor even though he was in the "perfect" position. I dilated fully in less than 4 hours and spent 2 hours pushing. I spent the whole time in water (my bath tub and then the birthing pool) and it did help a little.

Justice started crying when I was in the middle of typing so it threw me off my train of thought....lol. Labor hurts...that's just all it comes down to. Those people that say "it's just a little pressure"...YEAH RIGHT...PRESSURE my foot!!!! It HURTS. Like Maggie said though, some handle it better mentally and physically and emotionally, while others (like me) don't and opt to take drastic measures. I will say this though...IME other minor pain meds don't really do much good. Every time I have tried other stuff I still ended up having to get the epidural too because it was still not very helpful. So now I just jump straight to the big stuff. Some people on here though have said they got a lot of needed relief from other pain meds that weren't as drastic as the epidural.

I've not had stadol..but I did have Nubain once, and that was pretty good. Made me feel like I'd had one too many (drinks)...but not to the point where I felt out of control. Just lightheaded and relaxed. Just enough to take the edge off...but not enough to make me not hurt. An odd balance. But it worked!

Hiya! I'm fine (thanks for checking in, Manda!) ... I'm down to "about five weeks" and feeling a little more fortitude re the rest of this. From 8wks left to 6wks left, I felt positively negative! I have a HUGE craving for ice ... I chew up gobs of ice every day ... could that be some kind of deficiency?

that's what I was thinking too...I just couldn't remember what the heck it was called. ETA: yes it is. How long has it been going on Hazel? Have you had your iron checked lately?

Oh, what is pica? I was like this with my first two, as well. I tend toward anemia ... haven't been checked in a while ... maybe I'll try a suplement and see if my craving goes away!

pica is the urge to eat things that are not food (chalk, dirt, ect) or things that are food..sorta, like ice chips to the point of excess. Pica is part of severe anemia. I would say you should get your iron checked...and think about a supplement. There are some very good natural ones, if you want to avoid the nasty side effects of OTC iron pills.

I craved ice cubes in the evenings for the last 8 weeks of my 2nd pregnancy but didn't have anaemia. It seemed to have the effect though of making sure I didn't have the terrible heartburn that I'd had with my 1st pregnancy!

I have a drs apt tomorrow. Prayers please. I'm considering asking him to check me to see if I have progressed since my 36 wk apt. I was at 3 cm then. I really don't mind being induced, but at the same time, it would be nice to just let my body work like it's made to. I guess the deciding factor will be my bp.

We saw the heartbeat! They pushed my due date back a full week - my EDD is 2/14/2010. The baby is so very tiny right now that the tech had trouble even getting a good measurement. I have a second ultrasound in 4 weeks to confirm the date/size. I am also feeling less tired. Which is really good since my big boy (turned 2 on Sat.) has been getting kind of antsy lately. How is everyone else doing? Kris

Thanks! It'll still be a few weeks before we get to hear our little "lentil". Yes, we are the crazy people who call our baby whatever food it is approx. the size of that week. It was very reassuring though to see the little "blinker" going strong. I thought I saw it but wasn't sure, but then Mark mentioned it and the tech agreed that it was that teeny, tiny little heart. I actually feel better about things now. I just don't have that "yippee, I am pregnant" thing this time and was feeling kind of weird about it. I do have that "wow, there is a little life growing in me" thing going on now so that is good. I think maybe I was feeling so shocked that I didn't REALLY process it until this morning. Well, enough self musing for now! Kris
