Okay, that makes more sense. Thanks BelleWeather. So a hand cart is a wheelbarrow? Yeah, I'd fit into that.

Do you happen to know the origins of this expression? I mean, there's got to be a reason for an expression like that. I find this sort of thing fascinating.

Google is my friend.

Okay, one last time.

There is nothing bad about the hand basket, and the hand basket is not the bad situation.

The phrase references a bad situation that is being supported, by being placed in the metaphorical hand basket. Then the metaphorical hand basket is easily transported to Hell--the bad situation is reinforced and made more volatile.

Example:
My inability to explain the phrase "Going to Hell in a hand basket," has gone to Hell in a hand cart.

"I need your name, your mother's maiden name, date of birth, colour of the socks you are wearing, your address, and your first born,"

- incomprehensible phrase I hear when I call the bank, cable service provider, internet service provider etc. AND they don't even know that I am just calling to find out how late they are open!

WHY?[/

"Cleave unto your wife." What with -- a meat cleaver?

Intolerant means not tolerant, but inflammable means flammable and is sometimes used to mean not flammable.

I ran into another word like these yesterday, but this thread is about phrases . . . .

Yes unfortunately inflammable is sometimes misused...some think it means "not flammable" when in fact it means it can be in-flamed, hence inflammable. Thereforethe incorrect "flammable" is used more often to avoid confusion which could so easily result in a dangerous situation becoming even more dangerous.

My mother-in-law says a person is "wearing her feelings on her sleeve" (or his) when that person is easily offended by something that someone else has said in jest. (Just the act of brushing up against someone would "set her off", and in a crowd, brushing up against someone is unavoidable.) So, the person who wears her feelings on her sleeve would be in a perpetual state of irritation. and the least little thing would make her mad.

Straighten up and fly right

Getting to first, second and thrid base

Your elevator doesn't go to the top floor

Two sandwiches short of a picnic

Your porch light is out

Your pulling my leg

Pull the wool over my eyes

More power to ya

Get a word in edgewise

Quit yankin' my chain... I think it means quit fooling me. No idea where it came from.

Don't make me beat you with a wet noodle!

The one that really gets me is kick the stew out of it. I heard this when I was riding a horse and it was being mean and trying to bite. Wouldn't the horse have to eat stew for that to even be possible?

Don't get yourself in a tissy.

Slept like a log.

This one I like: Pushin' up daisies. (Refering to someone who is dead) or 6ft under.

Don't get your undies in a wad!

Then there is this one that I really don't like: Oh my god!

geez louise! I wonder what she did.

knee-high to a grasshopper

many moons ago (I like that one too.)

Oh and how about this one. That's so good it'll make ya slap yer mama.

I will quit now....

Was the phrase the whole nine yards given yet?

The bottom line
More fun than a barrel of monkeys
Up the wazoo

"Wazoo" is a slang word used for either the butt-hole or a woman's genitalia. I'd suggest you NOT use that one! You might receive a few dirty looks.

LOL guess I won't be saying that one.

He/she spearheaded the project

If someone has to take a spear to the head I think thats a project that shouldn't be done and the person surely should not be getting recognized for their work. LOL

A church member said this one at church on Sunday regarding his business:

"We just got to make the least amount of mistakes than we have to."

I don't get it. Since when do we "have to" make a "mistake"? If we HAVE to make a mistake, is it truly a "mistake"?

That's definately a sneer against Hinduism. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for worshiping a cow as long is it's in the form of a 2 inch steak on my dinner plate.
