Money was my mom's reason, too. She and I were separated for the first 24 hours 'cause mom had a slight fever (hosptial rules), and bro had a heart condition that nearly killed him, and he was evac'ed to another hospital while mom recovered from a section. In both cases bro and I were fed other things besides breast milk and my mom pumped (for a while in my brother's case). We both nursed to 12 months, no problem.

Generic formula is not that expensive... And it was worth every penny since it preserved my sanity I have been debating breastfeeding again but I don't know if I want to bother. Thinking about it doesn't quite make me feel anxious anymore but I do not at all look forward to the possibility. I definitely will NOT be pumping.

Thinking about it doesn't quite make me feel anxious anymore but I do not at all look forward to the possibility. I definitely will NOT be pumping. I haven't decided either. I *did not* enjoy it, even after we supposedly got the majority of the kinks worked out. And Jeremy really liked being able to help feed Levi. And pumping....I will never do that again lol. At least not exclusively. What a pain! I would really, really like to try again, but I need to decide whether to tell myself, "You're doing this no matter what" and work through the struggles, or else tell myself I'm going to try, but not force myself if we struggle a lot. Now a question! One of my early problems with Levi is that he had a teeny tiny mouth (using preemie nipples for a couple weeks) and I had pretty large breasts/nipples. Therefore, we (me, nurses, doctors) could not get him to latch on right. Is there a way to work around that (if it's a problem) with the next baby?

Amber I had same issue and we really just had to work at it over and over. I had an amazing Lactation Consultant in the hosp who made all the difference. Now I have a question: Do toddlers get lazy with their nursing? she almost seems to have a lazy latch. It's weird. And she's totally cutting out feeds on me and while I know it's a part of her growing up I MISS IT!!!!!!!

ORIGINAL: W.O.F. I had one baby who ate every 2 hours...but slept 6 hours a night from birth. I had another baby who ate every 2 hours round the clock until she was 6 months old, I had another baby who ate every 1 1/2 hours...until she was 4 months old.... I mean this in the best possible way, but sometimes I'm astonished anyone breast feeds at all. Those numbers would've had my kids on the bottle before long. I can understand...but I have to tell you...I have friends whose FORMULA fed babies followed similar routines.....

At least someone else can take a turn, then. But I get what you're saying. My aunt bottle fed 1 and nursed 2 of her babies. She said nursing was easier.

True...usually someone else can take a turn with bottle feeding....and it is easier for babysitters, etc. But it comes down to...kids gotta eat when they gotta eat.... and as long as you aren't having struggles with nursing.....it is easier than keeping up with the bottle washing, formula mixing, etc....at least for me.

NUrsing was SO much easier for us. I never exclusively formula fed, but at first we were pumping and having for fortify my milk and it was such a pain to clean bottles, mix it up, etc. I loved it when we started nursing. Amber, Isaac obviously had a small mouth and I am "well endowed" so at the NICU thats why they pushed us to use a nipple shield. I guess it worked okay, but I didnt want to deal with it so I ditched it and worked on getting him on the breast, it took a good month more once he got home to get him big enough and strong enough to nurse. I'd say, in that case, a nipple shield is definitely worth a try. It pulls the nipple/breast out to where its a little more like a bottle and makes latching easier for little babies. If I needed to wean Isaac, what would be the most gentle way to do it? He only nurses morning and night. And the poor kid sees me lay down on the couch (at our tv/relax time) and he gets so excited and comes and climbs up with me to nurse. I might possibly could be (but I also could be imagining things) pregnant and I think I'd be forced to wean if/when I became pregnant again. But the thought of denying him that special time makes me sad.

Is Klay home either/both of those nursing times? I found having Daddy take over bedtime was the easiest way to get rid of the night nursing (with Hannah...Esther is still nursing!).

Erin, You might just try snuggling him...and rocking him gently. If he wants to nurse...let him nurse for a while..then cut it short by gently saying "done" or "empty".....so if he normally nurses for 30 minutes...cut it back to 25...and then every 2 to 3 days...take another 5 minutes off....find out which nursing he is the most "connected" to..and save it for last to wean him off of.....

Every lactation consultant I've known has said exactly what WOF did. I've also found that I keep a water bottle by our bed. If she asks for milkies I offer the water first and if she says no I offer breast. It's a 50/50 split right now as to what she will take. I am also leaning on the side of Sarah.. Your body should be used to the sensation and if you are pregnant, you've already been nursing him.. Also, another thought, the stimulation you do to bring on labor at the end is different than nursing. It's more direct, longer and stronger than a toddlers suckle. I would talk to several medical folk before weaning him if you think you are pregnant. BUT on the other hand, if you are ready to wean, then go for it. I'm not entirely ready to wean completely but the 3 am feed can go !!!

Ya, I think it's totally fine to start limiting/reducing the all night grazing. That would have driven me bonkers a long time ago :D Are you PMSing?? I am seriously bad. It dawned on me the other night while I was crying in bed over a friends situation and being upset with husband over his attitude earlier and I was STARVING and pinned by a toddler. I'm either way early pregnant or way PMS city!!! Pelvic rest would be icky but ya, then all nipple stim is off limits. Another good reason to start slowly weaning.

Erin, I just have to say that I am still amazed at all you did to get him to nurse and am so glad you've had a great nursing relationship! Go Mama!!! I'm definitely looking forward to no bottle washing this time around! Especially those stinkin' Habermans!

Another thing I did with Hannah when getting her to cut back...for daytime nursing, I would give her a sippy and a snack (cheese or something substantial for the belly) and snuggle her tight and read a book or three. That way, I was cutting out the nursing and not the snuggles. That didn't work for us for bedtime, so that's why Daddy took over bedtime.

Well, tomorrow we find out if Derrek is FINALLY gaining some weight! I sure hope so. Otherwise, where is all the milk going to? We are nursing on average ever 2.5 hours and also supplementing with pumped breastmilk. At this point I'm just trying to remind myself of how much better breastmilk is than formula. I have no idea how much longer I can keep all this up. Oh...another question....How many calories shoud a nursing mama be eating/drinking per day?
