Ok, so Derrek seems to be pretty congested this evening. Mostly nasal, but some coughing and sneezing too. What can I do for him? I'm afraid to put him in his crib tonight. I took his temp, and it has been around the 99 degrees mark all evening.

Saline nose drops and suction helped Isabel. Hot steamy bathroom helped sometimes as well.

And she slept on me propped up or on a pillow propped up to help stay clear.

I'll have to wait until tomorrow to get the saline drops...everything here is closed. Would a vapor bath help you think?

You can use a few drops of breast milk if you are adventurous.

Oh duh I also did milk up her nose too!! Expressed some into a little cup and used nasal bulb thing to put a drop or two, into each side.

I would be wary of a vapor bath because of how little he is and how much vapor could be released. We would put several drops of Eucalyptus oil in our humidifier and it seemed to help as well.

You could do the vapor thing in water but not put him in it, and when YOU can feel it working you could air out the room a bit or just keep the door open more than you would for yourself.

YES>..there is good reason that it has an age recommendation on the bottle (or at least used to when I had my first two...I haven't bought it in years so I don't know if it still does. I think it was 6 months though back then).

Saline and suction is usually the best. At that age their little sinuses are so tiny the get stuffy so easily.

A warm bath with no vapors wouldn't hurt. The suction stuff never seemed to work for me, but don't do it to often, you can irritate his sinuses more.

Oooo, Sarah got me into trouble. I told Greg that she'd correctly called Nathan's ear infection and he said "Wait a minute, someone told you DAYS ago that Nathan might have an ear infection, and you only took him into the doctor just yesterday?!" Now, what do I say to that?

You say, "Yes, dear, but Sarah is super-duper crunchy, which you tend to think of as wacky." Kidding, of course. Really, if he hadn't mentioned his ear hurting, it would be easy to think that wasn't it.

I just checked my vapor bath and it says 3 months and up. I would personally use it for a younger baby if they were stuffy. I don't leave little little ones in bath water long anyway.

Levi is still sleeping. But he was bouncing off the walls last night until 11.

Sharon, hope Derek is better this morning, but if he is still stuffy you could try running a super hot shower and just sitting in the bathroom with him for a few minutes. We used that and saline. We suctioned once, it didn't really go well.

I think I might be inclined to use the vapor bath too, just maybe not put too much in there. With Isaac we've used it (recently, not when he was small) and it wasnt strong at all, even when using the recommended amount. Also, get some Baby Vicks rub. Saline drops and suction work great, makes them mad as all get out but does work. If you are hesitant to use the vapor bath, a warm steamy bath/shower really help too (as I see you have already done!)

Yeah that's it...blame the crunchiness!!!!

Yeah that's very true.

On the vapor bath...I just wanted to say that you have to really go with family and personal history. My family has a LOT of people that are sensitive or allergic to smells (me, my mom, my dad, my grandma, my cousin, my aunt...would probably be more except I have a small family- only 4 cousins). I can't handle most perfumes and am allergic to smoke...I can't breathe and lose my voice if I get just one little whiff of anything like that. My family also has a lot of issues with upper respiratory stuff because of those allergies. I can't remember too many winters that I didn't end up with an upper respiratory infection because of crud building in my chest. With our family history I am extra cautious with vapor rub and the such.

On another note similar to that...I can't breathe in hot steamy places. When I was little and my brother and I would get upper respiratory junk, my mom would have to sit in a steamy bathroom with him, and my dad would have to sit outside in the cold with me wrapped in a heating blanket so I could breathe. So if he seems like he can't breathe well in the steam, I wouldn't push that one too much.

One of my nieces has the same issue with the hot steam - she gets what is basically big kid croup every winter and has to go outside. Her little sis gets it too but does fine in steam. When I did it with Josh it wasn't super steamy and still worked great. But when my sinuses are acting up the first thing I try is a ripping hot wash cloth over my nose and forehead a few times and it works great. So I figured it would work for him - or at least be worth a shot. The steam, NOT the wash cloth - the only way that works is if it is almost too hot to use, not good for babies!

I get "big kid croup" even as an adult Thank you, asthma. And yes, for croup cold air is almost always better then steam. Steam makes it harder for me to breath, but cold air makes it better.

The difference though, is that steam DOES help when I have sinus issues but not when it's a chest issue.

I personally wouldn't have used steam or a vapour thingy for a baby under 3 months old - I'd just raise the head end of the mattress a little. After 3 months I used Snufflebabe, or a little Olbas Oil (baby) on a piece of cloth - in the room but away from the cot.

Josh never had any chest congestion, I thought we were talking mostly nasal. That's why I suggested sitting in the bathroom with the shower. In our case it didn't even take a ton of steam, more of warm humid air with a little steam. But the niece that they do steam for gets worse outside with her croup.

Sorry...we were...I got it off track by talking about chest issues with regard to smells or the vapor stuff, and it grew from there. Sorry.

Derrek does seem to be better today. I think it may be allergies, but only time will tell. Poor little guy is doomed with allergies, both daddy and I have pretty heavy allergies.

He is still a bit sniffly today, but he does not seem to have the post nasal drip going on like he did yesterday. I did get some saline and if this evening it gets worse again, I'll suction out his nose. That whole thing creeps me out, but if it makes him feel better, I'll suffer though

It's actually exceptionally rare for a baby his age to have environmental allergies. But nasal congestion is quite common in babies, just because their sinus' and stuff aren't fully developed.

That is good to know. Although, it makes me sad to see him all stuffy.

Ah, Beth is having a bad night, poor girl. She woke with a hard stool, and has been having a lot of trouble getting back to sleep. Sounds like she's quiet right now, but we've been walking her, nursing her, more nursing her, letting her cry in her crib.... Being a human pacifier is extremely unpleasant for me, but I'll do it for short periods if I have to.

Sometimes I feel even more for daddy who tries to help, but he really wants a firm "set of rules" for what to do if Beth is crying, and often there isn't one. Hopefully she'll sleep the night now that she seems to have settled down.

And yes, we've been feeding her more prunes to help with the diaper situation.

ETA: I spoke to soon. Oh well, "parenting = sleep deprivation".

Poor babe. I hope she sleeps well now!

Esther has her first 4 molars coming in. She walked around crying all evening, refusing to be consoled in any way.

Oh, poor Esther!

We finally gave Beth some Motrin almost out of desperation. She's happy now, but wide awake. I wonder if she's teething, too? I hope both our girls feel better soon.

poor both of you!!

not to sound braggy but my child is the happiest little person with a double ear infection ever. I took her in to follow up on some bad wheezing and both ears are infected. I would NEVER have thought that.
She is the first of my kids to ever have an ear infection. After 5 kids, I'm an ear infection rookie lol

Sandy, I never think of ear infections either. Gabby has never had one, which sort of shocked me since I was the queen of ear infections and she has the ear issues that run in Micah's family.
