I plan to go into Early Childhood Education. Because I work with children my clothes are relativly (sp?) casual. But at the same time I am dealing with families of the children so I need to look somewhat professional (sp?)I wear clothes that fit and that are comfortable and I look appropaite (sp?) for the the job that I have. Over sized clothes make shorter and bigger...I don't need to look shorter or bigger.

Makeup. I have a love/hate relationship with makeup. I look better with the right makeup applied well. But getting just the right makeup has always been a challenge for me! I live in a tropical climate, so much of it just melts off (gross) and I think my skin changes just enough to have whatever foundation I'm using at the moment all of a sudden not look right or natural. Ug.
So I have slowly stopped wearing it much at all. So in this instance, yes, I have sacrificed beauty for...not really comfort, but....how do I say it?

I thought of some more thing that fit into this discussion: contact lenses, and jewelry. Some kinds of earrings I find are uncomfortable after awhile, and contacts have always ended up being irritating after awhile. I still wear contacts on occasion, but I've worn my glasses more often than not this past year.
I guess I've gotten to be an old frump because I wear almost no jewelry anymore. I have a bracelet I wear 24/7 and that's it. Been wearing it for about 20+ years. But I don't wear it to be attractive. I wear it for sentimental reasons.
As for glasses, I cannot read without them, and I've contemplated getting contacts because it's such a hassle to always have reading glasses (got about a dozen pairs stuffed here and there). Are contacts made for people who are farsighted? I honestly don't know.

Same here, but then it helps that my eyelashes are black. I stopped using mascara years ago and use eye pencil in such a way that there is no need for mascara.

They have all different kinds of contacts now. They even have bifocal contacts.
I didn't have any problems with them until this year but it was due to wearing the silicone contacts, (wrong for my eyes) and lots of dust .. plus I kept rubbing my eyes.

Try it. They usually let you get a trial pair for a week. Glasses don't fit me right either so if i need bifocals I will try those.

I use mineral makeup, which is very comfortable, but if I wear it several days in a row I start to break out and I have to take a break from it. I have very sensitive skin and sensitive eyes, which is probably why contacts bother me. I wore a choker all day yesterday that my husband bought for me for my birthday, and it's beautiful, but it began to irritate my neck after awhile.
I don't wear bracelets at all, but mostly because it's such a hassle washing dishes with a bracelet taking it off and on so often. I used to have a terrible time with my pierced ears getting infected, but I haven't had any problem with them in a long time.

Makeup: my wearing it depends on my mood. It's not a discomfort to wear it. Always wear it when I'm dressing up. But I haven't been in the mood to wear it lately. I wear it on Sundays for church. I definitely like how I look better with makeup on.
Lisa: how do you apply your makeup? Sponges or brushes or both? I was breaking out worse than usual recently (a day after I would wear makeup) and washed ALL my makeup brushes REALLY well with handsoap. I haven't broken out since.
Contacts: I tried them and they were OK, but my eyes are so dry that they hurt after about 6-8 hours. That would get me through work, and that's it. I don't mind my glasses, so I switched back. I can't wear contacts at work anyway because I work in a lab and am around biohazard. So I don't waste the money on them. I've thought about getting a small supply and wearing them for dates and such, but DH doesn't dislike my glasses so I'm not sure I really care. I would say that my glasses and contacts are equally annoying, contacts maybe a touch moreso.
Jewelry: I have a sensitivity to many metals, so my jewelry is carefully chosen. I have 2 holes in each ear. I have 4 different earrings in, but they are simple and understated. I wear them every day, taking them out to sleep because they fold and hurt my head lately. I have a magnetic bracelet that I wear daily for my tendonitis. It's not for fashion, but it looks fashionable. I have a simple cross necklace that I wear every day; it only gets removed when I wear a nicer necklace for some other occasion. And of course my wedding ring. For the most part, my jewelry is the same every day, and very understated.
What about hair? What do y'all do to your hair??? I find it uncomfortable to stand in front of a mirror trying to do my hair. But I do it every day so I look presentable. I hate drying it; I hate styling it; I try to find all the shortcuts and simple solutions with every hairstyle. To be honest, I miss my towel dry and throw gel in it curly hair. But the length was annoying me so I cut it recently.

I use brushes. I never thought about washing them out. Maybe I should try that.

I don't do my hair everyday. The most comfortable thing is a low ponytail. I don't wear it down often, because it bothers me to be able to feel my hair next to my face. I have an octopus clip that I wear a lot. I can put up quickly and it looks nice and gets it out of my face. The only thing uncomfortable about that is that I can't lean against the seat in the car or lie down and read with it in because it pokes me in the back of my head. But it's easy enough to take out and put back in that I just take my hair down when it's uncomfortable and then put it back up later.

Makeup -- I like mineral, it's light yet looks finished. It doesn't melt off in the summer. I only wear makeup when I'm going somewhere.
Mascara -- my lashes are long, but are very thin and light so I definitely look better with it. In fact, most days when I'm home even though I don't put on makeup, I will swipe on a little mascara, it makes a big difference.
Hair -- I wore my hair long forever, but it's very thick and wavy and I got tired of the maintenance (constant conditioning, straightening, products to help control the curl, etc.). So I went short with an inverted bob. It's practical, easy and sophisticated.

I apply my eyeliner by making a thinner line at the tear duct and allowing it to graduate to a thicker line as it reaches the outer side of my eyelid. Then, I sweep eyeshadow over it with an angled eyeliner brush to give a bit of depth. I use medium tones so they don't contrast with the color of my eyelashes and make them stand out... my eyelashes are a medium brown and black eyeliner makes them look ashen while light eyeliner doesn't have enough definition.
I haven't always had eye infections and have grown up wearing mascara almost daily until I hit 33 yo. After doing my experiment with different makeup to see if that was causing my eyes to be infected, I narrowed it down to mascara. Different brands didn't make a difference. I assumed either the industry had changed formulas to add an indredient that didn't suite me or that I had developed an allergy/sensitivity to something that manifested itself eventually as an infection. idk... but I do know that I haven't had an infection since I quit mascara two years ago.
RE: hair-- I used to spend and hour every day on my hair in HS and college. After marriage, I got to the point of wanting my hair to look good, but not being willing to spend the time on it. So, I pulled it back all the time because that was what took the least amount of time. I guess that's fine once in a while, but it was a bit casual for every single day and every single occasion. So, over the years, I slowly allowed my hair to be cut in a manner that worked with my hair texture instead of against it. Now, it takes me two minutes to fix. I get compliments on it all the time. So, I wouldn't say in this area that I sacrifice comfort for beauty- although I did during the "pull back" stage. I'd say that I'm just a better steward of my time and the hair that God gave me.

I'm with you Tamara. I don't wear make-up. My hair is just straight and I usually pull it up in a pony tail or clip: I don't like to feel it on my neck. However, I don't want a hairstyle that will require regular cuts to maintain...I'm too [strike]cheap[/strike] umm frugal to do that.
I figure, I'm confident to go with what is comfortable for me: simple hair and no make up. If you don't like me or approve of me because of that then, oh well....

Trite as it sounds I've found it really does start with a very good haircut. So I've learned not to scrimp on getting my haircut. I will pay big bucks to someone who really knows what they're doing; it saves so much time and money later. 'Cause frankly I'm terrible with hair. I HATE fixing my hair. Thankfully I have a long layer that works great, but it took me a while to find what I like and someone I like to do my hair. The end result is I need little or no styling and it usually looks good. I also keep some gel just in case I'm in a humid climate because my hair is like a sponge and will tend to kink up in a humid climate.
But for years I heard that my hair was hard to style because I just had hair that needed lots of styling. I don't buy that garbage anymore. Either it's cut right so I don't have to spend a lot of time on it or it's not. That simple.

My oldest daughters hair is really, really curly, and she's got a lot of it. We got her a nice ceramic straightening iron a few years ago, and it works great. Takes her less than 10 minutes to do her hair, and it seals the hair so it doesn't tend to frizz.
There is a picture of her in the link below. She's in a blue shirt and has sunglasses on her head. Her hair in this picture is actually not nearly as curly as it can get:

Makeup- I wear it everyday, just a bit of tinted moisturizer, mascara, and blush(or bronzer depending on the season). I don't typically need a concealer, I've found that a good skincare routine has pretty much negated any acne I had.
HisCov, have you tried a natural mascara? I *finally* found one that is Paraben free and it seems pretty good.
