Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if you could find twelve nationally known groups willing to donate a date, perhaps on a trip where the HOF is between (say) a Thursday and a Saturday date.

Also, if they could sell CDs there, they could recoup a bit of their costs, even if they donated the performance.

Sure, you might not get every headliner, but a group like Tribute (I think Gary Casto's on the SGMA board) might donate a drive-by date.

The problem is NOT with the groups. Several years ago the SGMA booked the local baseball stadium for a day in June, had at least 20 groups who came from all over, and still couldn't get much fan support. It was summer, so the tourist were here. The groups were from every part of the SG spectrum from the Crabb Family to the McKameys, Greater Vision to the Primitives. Tier A groups, if you will. The groups were there all day long, and none got paid. They all did it because they believed in the museum, and wanted to pay tribute to those who had paved the way. There was plenty of advertising; I know there were full page ads for several months in the Singing News.

And the people stayed away in droves.

We were never able to identify specific reasons for the poor turnout. But the problem was NOT the support of the groups.

I wasn't aware of that, Frog. Very interesting. Thanks for sharing.

yes Frog, that is very sad.
I wonder if promoters go about advertising the wrong way. The Singing News is an OK way to promote concerts, but I think church advertising would be best, but is utilized surprisingly little.
We have had the Kingsmen here in our town at least 5 times, and if I hadn't known the people putting it on, would never have heard about it.
I have a couple ideas that someone might want to run with.

These may not be the most economic way to advertise a single group type concert, but would work for "events" like what you described above.

1. Send letters or emails to all churches within approx. a 20 mile radius of the concert. Include flyers if available.

2. In this letter announce discounts for people who bring a recent church bulletin.

3. Give churches group rates for bringing whole busses of people. Say an event is going to be 15.00 a ticket. If a church brings 100 people, make it 10.00 a piece. Let them mail you the money early and mail out tickets for the group.

4. If it's a real big event like the one you described with 20 groups, try to get some of the bigger local churches to allow one of the organizers about 5 minutes during announcements to talk about the concert. If a church won't or can't do this, or it too expensive for the organizers to travel, ask the church to put information in their bulletin about the event.

I don't know if these would work, but I do know that I have never seen churches utilized in our area to promote events, except in rare cases.

Of course the Singing News ads weren't the only advertising. I mentioned that to show it was not just a regional thing. I wasn't involved in that part of the event, so I don't know the specifics of the marketing.

The point I was trying to make is that I have never heard of a group refuse to help with the museum. There are pros and cons about thaving the museum at Dollywood. But please don't think that the groups don't or won't support it.

This is mostly for folks who are SGMA members but anyone can post suggestions.

I got my ballot in the mail today from the SGMA for nominations to the SGMA Hall of Fame class of 2009. We're allowed to nominate 1 living and 1 deacesed individual for the Hall. Groups may not be nominated.

I've actually been thinking about this for several months and I have decided which individuals I am going to nominate. They are:

Cecil Blackwood
Claude Hopper

I believe both are very deserving of the honor.

So, any other SGMA members want to reveal which folks they are going to nominate?
