A black President-elect needing security in the US. What surprises you about that? Actually I don't see Obummer in the photo, unless he's the driver.

You don't remember any president requiring that level of security? Have you ever seen a presidential motorcade? There are 5 guys in that SUV, one with an M-4. I saw Bill Clinton give a commencement address at Syracuse University a few years ago (2004?) and there were at least a dozen agents on the floor throughout the speech - I have no idea how many were elsewhere. Dick Cheney was in Boston this past July 4 and he had a few cars & SUV's as well as a significant police escort.

Anatomy of a motorcade

There are plenty of policy issue for you guys to disagree with him on; you don't have to go looking for things and making stuff up.

For those who are wondering, the picture comes from this article.

Even before 9/11, the cost of protection for former presidents was estimated as $24 million a year, and Bush will be guarded by an unprecedented 103 full-time agents starting in January 2009.

Boy, is this guy paranoid!

They don't usually have the windows open for you to see inside. SWAT teams have been rolling with full-auto weapons (or at least 3-round burst) for years; I'd expect the Secret Service to be at least as well-armed. What did you think they were carrying?

The Secret Service people you normally see in amongst crowds have weapons, but they don't show them. It doesn't surprise me that the motorcade agents are this heavily armed. They probably also have air support most of the time too.

And unfortunately, he is a bigger target than other presidents.

I don't care how many Secret Service agents it takes or what weapons they use the President Elect, the Standing President and all of the past Presidents deserve the absolute best protection and security that we can possibly offer. If they deem it neccessary to use tactical nukes that is fine with me. :P Or cost.

I say what a great article about the websites being hacked into. They didn't expect that? Either candidate?

Exactly. Besides, I'm not sure Obama determines how much security he receives anyway. Those decisions might be made by experts. Better safe than sorry is never more true than here.

I agree. Can you imagine if something happened to Obama? We'd have Biden as President. Noooo!!

Which would put us one step closer to Pelosi. No one can tell me that doesn't scare them more then Obama.

Barack Obama is the President-Elect of the United States. He has already received security clearance, now gets the daily intelligence briefs that President George W. Bush has been getting for years, and is now going to have Secret Service protection.

Obama deserves and needs that kind of protection. Some people have already openly called for his death (witness some of the more frenzied Sarah Palin rallies). Some people are under custody for plotting to kill him.

Two notes to people who posted here.

It's not "estreme," it is "extreme."

And the Chicago remark is uncalled for - there are dangerous urban areas in other cities in our country.

I once travelled with Bill Bennet when he was Drug Czar in the '80s, and his coterie of Secret Service agents was at least this big; I don't think this is at all unusual.

So your co-worker is a neighbor of the terrorist Ayers; must be an interesting neighborhood.

Thanks

From reports I've heard, there have already been two possible attempts on his life thwarted. I suspect this President will have extreme secret service coverage for the whole of his Presidency. I don't think it's necessarily up to him...

I bet her co-worker is a terrorist. And because IMA_CHRISTIAN works with someone who lives near a terrorist, his judgment, morality, and Christianity are suspect.
