I agree! Some political leaders would probably fear for their life if they had to tell us what we "really pay".

The only problem with the consumption tax is collections.

Collections are done in the stores for city, county and state sales taxes already now in about 45 of the 50 states. And it would be the retail stores who get audited, not the consumer.

We discussed this a little in this thread. Page three post 52 is where I believe it begins.

We're paying around $2500 on our 1860 sq ft home valued at $125k in central IL. We don't live in city limits, so don't pay city tax, but our school district is out of control with their expenditures, which makes up most of our property tax. Our library now has a coffee bar, there's talk of a new town pool (at taxpayer expense, of course) and the latest paper shows that the school board says we have to build a new grade school now, and probably should be considering adding on to the brand new high school (whose sports facilities are "adequate" but they underestimated how much classroom space they needed).

If we had school age children we wouldn't send them to this public school, so I'm trying to convince DH that we need to move to another district.

Silly question:

What happens when one doesn't pay property taxes?

I'm going somewhere with this, so please stay with me....

There is a lien placed upon the property and the county has the right to confiscate and sell the property at auction.

Right you are Stamper Ben!

So....

Does one ever really “own” their property?

In so far as when the bank has no more interest in it financially and I garner all the proceeds upon its sale, yes.

I'm a renter - thank GOD because property taxes on this house in Dallas/Ft Worth are $8,000/yr.

what kind of house are you RENTING....and where?????

we live in Dallas/Fort Worth....and pay close to $4,000/yr. in property taxes....and have a pretty darn good house in a great school district. Our property tax appraisals have fallen slightly the past year or so, even though, the sale prices of the homes in our neighorhood STILL keep going UP and UP....

I do know of a friend, who was selling his house about 6 years ago...on the real estate brochure for the house, the taxes were listed at $17,000/yr. (but, it was a VERY VERY nice house)....

They fell because of a temporary relief plan brought about by the Legislature in the last session. Never fear. They will be up to and past where they were in no time at all...

Which is totally independent of the appraised value you are taxed on.

which is one thing I don't get about property 'appraisals" and property taxes...

when you're living in a home, people complain that their property taxes are going UP and UP (because the value of their property/home is going UP and UP)......and, they always fight to get their appraisals reduced as much as possible.

OH..but, when it comes time to SELL, then, it's a different story......home sellers are always "pushing the envelope" with regards to how much the home is valued....and, demanding "top dollar".....(after spending the last several years insisting that their homes are worth LESS)....and, then, instantly "switch gears", and insist that their homes are worth MORE....

I take exception on this one. Renters do not pay Property taxes directly.
But it is included in the rent.

When I lived in a large city, they held an election to raise property taxes.
It passed. And lots of renters were shocked and outraged at their rent doubling.

I would agree with that. Also the election process. Many vacation home owners registered here to vote down a hike in taxes, After the election they switched back to their former counties. I know there is a lawsuit about it all.

The answer to that is No . Proof positive that we are still on the feudal system.

I disagree how the taxes are spent here. Seems as if the only time something gets done is an election year. The ditches and culverts around here need major over haul.

Our out of control school board continues to build palaces for the young skulls full of mush to the point they installed light-controlled blinds for all new schools. The blinds would self-adjust to maintain the level of light in the room.

I've never seen taxes go down. They may reduce the assessments and cut back in county spending, but the schools will increase the millage rates to get their budget filled.

So, even though the tax rate can be cut in one instance and kept the same in another the bill just keeps on growing!
