Here's the list Rate yourself, let us know, and then add your own essential skill. I rate a 57 - some things I simply have never had to do though.

Interesting. Obviously I didn't answer every question correctly. On one of the tests, I totally disagree with the answer. The consistency you want, in mixed concrete, is NOT that of chunky peanut butter - unless there's a really runny chunky peanut butter I've never seen.

I'll take my concrete chunky thank you. It's much stronger "placed" using a concrete pump than "poured" runny. Being a builder and retired firefighter, I've done everything on their list except #55.

As thick as chunky peanut butter? The stuff that won't flow? The stuff you have to scoop out of the jar? Every one of my experiences with "too dry" ready mix have been negative.

It does greatly depend on your uses and application, but it's to be more like a stew than soup. If it's got a good chunky consistency but is still dry in the center, then you didn't mix it good enough. Working concrete is heavy work, it's not supposed to flow. You are supposed to scoop it out and hear it go Thump in the bottom of your post hole or footing. If you do a slump test and the concrete spreads excessively, you will fail inspection.

The only one I really had to say no was the sewing machine. I'm sure they're not that difficult, but I've never had to learn. 99

Too embarrassed to answer. I don't think I'm as manly as you guys, even though older than at least some.

(#13)?

The one you really don't want to do is 'perform hands-on CPR'.

I took the quick 15 question quiz and got 100%. Going throught the list of 100 things there are a lot I can do and many I am trained to do but haven't had the opportunity to perform. Of course in 60 years of living and working in several different occupations I have more experience than knowledge.

I did better than I thought I would; I got 64 from the list. I feel pretty good about that one.

You'd be amazed at how many "girly men" I meet that can't even put a post in the ground true and plumb for a mail box. There are several "handy man" businesses in my area that do quite well because of the general lack of DIY knowledge.

It's really not about 'Girly Men' or for that matter 'Manly Women". What it's really about is being capable of doing certain things in this world in order to take care of yourself, your family or your community. First responder first aid skills, minor home repair, simple auotomotive skills and many of the skills listed are things needed to survive in this world no matter your gender. I have taught my daughter many of the things so she can help herself as well as others. She and I have been to Mexico 9 times on Church Mission trips tom build homes. She can mix cement, hammer nails and sling stucco mud to make life a little better for a needy family. And yes she can set a post and string barbed wire as well. Not a bad pistol shot, long range varmint shooter and an average trap shooter. She can reload her own ammo and has two degrees, serves at our Church and volunteers in the community.

Wow. I even admit I haven't mastered the skill of slinging stucco. But y'know, most skills are perfected by practice. Those 14 out of 15 in the test I took at the site? It's because through the years I've had to DO them. Now I'm not a math person, so knowing the numerical degree that a ladder should be at didn't really matter, but I DO know what looks safe before I go up 20 feet to the roof. And as for knowing how to get out of a car that is under water with the windows up? I know the theory about a sharp blow with a pointed tool, but I have never had to practice it since I don't drive into bodies of water. At least not without the windows already being down...

Not a bad pistol shot, long range varmint shooter and an average trap shooter. She can reload her own ammo and has two degrees, serves at our Church and volunteers in the community. I've taken the test and only missed one of the fifteen questions. I also looked over the list and found only sixteen things that could be called essential to taking care of myself and my family or community. The article said it was about skills real men need. Included on the list were items like "Teach your children to fly a stunt kite", "Home brew beer", "Tackle steep drops on a mountain bike", Ditch a hard drive". Why do I have to know how to fly a stunt kite to be a real man and how is it necessary to taking care of my family? How is knowing how to home brew beer a needed skill for taking care of my family? I'm approaching 50 years of age and in all of that time I've never needed to mix my own cement, fly a stunt kite, I don't drink beer and wouldn't even know where to start when brewing it. Nor do I have any desire to know. I haven't ridden a bike in decades and when I tackel a steep drop on anything it's on my horse. Which also happens to be the way I conquer off-road obstacles. My father was a very good father and I consider him to be one of the most real men I know. He also cannot mix cement. He loved to hunt, but couldn't shoot straight to save his life. Never home brewed beer, flew a stunt kite, slung stucco and never learned to ride an bike. The only things any 'real man' needs to take care of his family is to be a good provider, teach right from wrong, instill in his family a love for God, country and fellow man and most of all, make sure he displays what a genuine man of God looks like. The sixteen items from the list I mentioned fall into the category of providing for your family, everything else is nice information to have but hardly necessary to being a 'real man'. I agree with Pauley464, the list creates an insulting caricature of the 'real man' and this thread does nothing but perpetuate a vulgar stereotype fit for nothing better than a saturday morning cartoon.

I was so amused by this test that I had several of my friends do it during a party, and the gay men all scored higher than the straights!

I reached 87 on the list of 100. Fly a stunt kite?? Tackle steep drops on a mountain bike?? Whitewater rafting?? Looks like a list made up by city guys who spend a week every year "roughing it" in Colorado. I got 14 out of 15 on the quiz, I confess to not knowing what an anvil lopper is. If I have to cut a branch, I use my reciprocating saw, unless it's too big, in which case I use my big McCulloch chainsaw.

An anvil lopper is one where you lop off the branch using a tool where the knife comes to rest against the flat anvil on the other side after slicing through the cellulose fibers.
