The only movie that's come close to scaring me, post-childhood, has been The Descent. A truly brilliant horror film! And it actually has strong female characters that aren't simultaneously sex objects, which is pretty uncommon in the genre.

That was a great horror/thriller movie!!!

I can't think of a movie off-hand that spooked me to the core, but my guage of whether or not I get freaked is when I'm done watching the movie, I'll steer clear of the windows...like I'm avoiding someone (or something!) from pearing in at me.

I stay away from torture porn movies like "Hostel" and "Saw". I mean, what's the benefit of watching suffering for suffering's sake?

Stephen King's IT

I have this movie on video.
I love Tim Curry and he did a great job with the clown character of IT. I love how he makes a character unique. He did the voice of Forte in Beauty and the Beast - The Enchanted Christmas and his voice was even scary in that.

I sure wish someone would explain this term to me, since there is no "porn" in any of these movies....

Depicting hard-core torture scenes in order to titilate the senses...in other words, movies that show severe torture for the entertainment value of watching it.

My point of view is...there's no entertainment value to torture scenes, period.

More clear?

I don't think it's the scariest movie ever, but I watched half of "The Mothman Prophecies" and it was just creeping me out big time.

The Exorcism of Emily Rose was pretty freaky. Great acting on the part of the girl who played Emily!

As for Hostel, I wish I could have that 90 minutes of my life back!

I watched that just last week, and I agree...it was spooky. Did you watch up until Richard Gere got a call to his hotel room? That part was creepy. This is a perfect example that a movie doesn't have to show violence or gore to get your hairs standing on end.

It was definitely a "pull the shades" night.

I forgot about that one. Richard Gere's reaction when he had the chapstick hidden in his hand and asked the caller on the phone what he had would have been something I would have done, it would have really got too me as well.

I watched up to the part in the library where the old guy is explaining to him what it is these people are seeing. "The Ukranians call them mothmen". The stupid DVD I had kept skipping 2 - 3 seconds so it got to the point where I just couldn't handle it any more. I was going to go to Blockbuster to rent it but after about an hour it had creeped me out so much I watched another movie instead LOL!!

I agree, I like "Suspense/Thriller" style movies. Gore just doesn't cut it. For example, 30 Days of Night. I read all the Graphic Novels. Well done. The movie wasn't suspensefull and toward the end it seemed to be gore just for gore's sake. Over all I was very disappointed.

Ohh, I just thought of another movie that IS SCARY. 28 Days and 28 Weeks Later. The sequel was actually better then the original. Those movies are gory, but when someone gets infected with the virus OHHHHHHH MAN it's not going to be good for anyone!

I totally agree with that! I watched that in theatres, not knowing what I was going to see....We went to Walmart afterwards...the greeter was putting carts away and whistling. I couldn't see him while he was doing it and I cried because it scared me so bad! I was 19 years old...lol

Good call there. I agree, not the scariest, but it has a very enjoyable level of creepiness going for it. And as others have pointed out, it achieves this without using any sort of intense violence.

Here is a question out of left field: does anyone remember a vampire movie about a highschooler who goes back in time (I think) to like the 50's or 60's? I remember seeing this on TV at my grandmas house maybe 20 years ago and it creeped me out a LOT, but cannot remember anything except that the highschoolers kept getting turned into vampires one at a time and someone drove a '57 Chevy or a T-bird (some sort of classic car). Oh, and I remember the kids being at a house party.

I asked this in my Zomb-a-thon thread, but maybe this thread is the best to ask in.

Anyone know it?

I heard this was a great horror film. I need to check it out.

I used to be terrified of "IT" when I was younger. I need to watch it again. It's been a while.

while not the scariest movie i have ever seen,,,,i still get freaked out by the hypno session in the movie theatre. something about sitting in that dark movie theatre all alone when it goes pitch black is unnerving. i thought it was a great movie.

loved kevin bacon in this.

i can't think of the scariest thing i have ever seen...nothing has really scared me since i was a child, and those movies don't scare me anymore....they are a little creepy, but nothing really scares me.

"The Shining" is the scariest movie I've ever watched in my memory. Even the pure thougth of it gives me chills. That hotel was terrifying.

I haven't watched it snice childhood, so I wonder if I'd still freak out now.

When you watch it as a young kid, that movie scares the heck out of you.

(I heard the boy who played the kid in the film went crazy after the movie???)

The movie that creeped me out the most was Burnt Offerings. Bette Davis was in it. There was an old house that fed off the deaths of people in it, and every time someone died, this hearse drove up. The actor driving the hearse had the most evil face I have ever seen!

This site has rekindled my interest in Mothman. Other than that Exorcist. (the book is even better) For some reason Blair Witch 2 kinda freaked me out on my first viewing in which i was alone at 3 in the AM and it was winter outside.
