There's talk in the House regarding it, along with a few Senators that have floated some weather balloons on the issue. Plus some ongoing discussions on how to structure things within the existing $700 billion mandate to facilitate a recover in bank capital. Lots of talk so far - it will be interesting to see what may come of it.

Madame Speaker is planning on calling a special session right after the election when she is sure they have enough votes to shove it down our throats pass it in the overwhelmingly Democrat congress.

ORIGINAL: Harvie Well, wasn't the last stimulus package merely an advance on next year's tax refund? No, it wasn't, at least not in the way you are thinking. They actually lowered the tax rate, but rather than change the withholding tables, they sent you the money in a lump sum.

Obama's been talking about another one since June. With Pelosi, it's been more recent.

The country has been in debt anyway - like we can do anything about that.

For many of us this was nothing more than a redistribution of wealth package. Nor mine. I was just pointing out that it was not a prepayment, but an actual reduction for those who qualified. Whether you agree or disagree with the stimulus (I was opposed to it) that doesn't change the math of what they actually did.

For MOST (not all) the 10% bracket was widened so that people with incomes under the threshhold got a tax break of 5% on a chunk of their income (the top of the 15% bracket stayed the same, so this really just turned some income into 10% tax instead of 15% tax). This is what I meant when I said it lowered the tax rate. Then, these people got a check for that difference instead of having to wait until next year. For others, like you and me, our incomes were too high, so we did not qualify for the tax reduction, and didn't get a check. For still others, there was some provision to pay them stimulus even though they paid no taxes. That is what you are upset about, and rightly so. Unfortunately I don't remember the details of how that worked. But it wasn't relevant to Harvie's question, so I ignored it. Or, in less words, the thing I was responding to Harvie about has nothing to do with the thing you are upset about.

You talk as if everyone personally stole from you. There are a lot of hard-working people who do without on a regular basis that were helped by the stimulus package. Yeah, we probably pay for it in the end but every little bit helps.

Yeah, we probably pay for it in the end but every little bit helps. You(we, I got a stimulus check also) aren't the one paying though, the wealthy percentage of America is and it isn't right, IMO. People shouldn't work hard to get where they are and then end up paying everyone else's debt. I was not a big proponent of the first package, and I will definitely be against anymore of them.

If we could refuse, then we certainly would... Things like stimulus packages go against the principles of capitalism, IMO. HERE is a good article about stimulus packages... The thing is that you have to look at the big picture. Yeah, it's nice to have some extra cash to pay off debt/buy toys but it's not the best thing overall in the long run. I would much prefer that we figure out a true "solution"(because I tend to think alot of our economy is cyclic) then to just keep putting a dab of Neosporin here and there.

You talk as if everyone personally stole from you. They did. I hope one day someone steals from you. Then you can realize that it's wrong. Next time you say you want something from the government...instead look at a person who pays more than their fair share in personal income tax to the government and just say to their face....."I hope Uncle Sam takes your money away and gives it to me".....just be honest and say it that way. It would help some of us feel better to realize that you do acknowledge that it's not your money and it's our work effort and sacrifice that you are demanding. Before the stimulas checks and the bail out happened Rhippie figured that each and every one of us had to send in over $7,000 to the Fed. government in "income tax alone" just to pay our fair share. For a family with two babies that $28,000.00 just to say you paid your fair share. For some of us we "wish" that was all we had to pay in. For some of you that figure will blow you out of the water. The bailout package I believe will cost each of us who pays taxes 32K? Is that correct. Oh how some of us "wish" that we only had to pay 28K plus 32K this year and that would be all that was expected/demanded out of us. I would cut the check today if Uncle Sam promised to leave me along until next year.

Well, the stimulus package really helped my family at the time. If it was an 'advance' on our 2008 refund, oh well. It's done, people cashed the checks and spent the money, no sense in complaining about it now.
