I am an elementary teacher and I thought I would give my thoughts. I have been impatient before with children but nothing like this. If I am leading ten kids down the hallway, I am not surprised if there are some talkers in that group; so 80 kids, its no surprise. From this ladies point of view, she probably feels like its her duty to make sure EVERYONE is not talking. That's probably what she was told. No one ever really said to her,"Yeah make sure they are completely silent but you will have a few talkers so don't let it stress you out." This teacher probably just needs to realize that everyone knows she can't keep all of these kids quiet and it's not worth yelling at them like that. I bet if someone just told her all this it would help out. I work at a "shut up duty" ( I call it that because I don't like the idea of having to keep the kids quiet like I do but its part of that particular duty). I sometimes feel like the meany but I end up giving out plenty of warnings and 99% of the time I discipline individual students. I can also partially feel her pain. It sounds like she had to repeatedly ask these students not to talk and it took her several tries and several times of taking away a minute of recess. I don't know how many times I have stood with a class of twenty five and told them we aren't going anywhere until they show me they can walk quietly in the hall. There are some who still continue to talk. It's like they don't have a clue: "Why could we have suddenly stopped in our route to the classroom? Why does the teacher keep looking at me when he is talking? Why do the other students keep putting their fingers to their lips and looking at me? I don't know, but I will continue to talk to my friend." It can get annoying. So with eighty kids... yeah. I am not saying something shouldn't be changed but I wanted you to realize what this woman is going through. On the other hand, maybe this one time when she takes away the eight minutes will be enough to keep them quiet the rest of the year. Maybe she has done this duty before and she knows that she really has to back up her words. But the yelling sounds too harsh.

I do morning duty at a local school. The kids line up before coming inside. I make them get quiet. We don't go in until everyone is quiet. If they take a while some of the teachers (it's me and 1 teacher on rotation) have warned them that maybe they will need to practice being quiet at recess. That gets them to settle down quickly. I know that occasionally there are still some whispers before I start walking in but if it is essentially silent I take them in. We are talking about 90 kids or so here. We don't make them be silent walking in. It can be impossible to tell who is talking. I will walk down the line and the ones I pass are quiet but then as I pass them I hear some whispers start behind me. However, I don't yell. (I may yell in the sense that I am speaking loudly to get their attention at first but not yelling AT them)

I think things are working out better. They finally paired her (the crazy noon monitor) up with a calmer noon monitor and so far things are working out. Each recess monitor has been given a notebook to keep track of the kids that are not following "hallway procedures." Things seemed to be very calm in the hallway today - I was there all day and we even had indoor recess (due to rain - kids in classrooms) and the kids and the noon monitors seem very subdued and calm for a Friday, especially a rainy one! Blessings, Garsy
