Hard words tore into my soul, Punched in my heart a gaping hole Revenge will be an easy choice “Payback”, cried an evil voice, Bitter words like cement sinking in, Hardened in my heart within “But Forgiveness,” rang a voice inside, “But his curses cut,” cried out my pride Like an evil arrow finds its mark again My fleshly senses swell around the pain. Inflicted with the cruelest agony, My friend became my worst enemy. The barbs sunk fast inside my soul, And as they festered I lost control. At last in rage I let the hurting fly Heaping curses at a brazen sky I blamed everyone and then God too, When at last a cross came into view High above the din of all my curses, He hung still begging for my mercies I now beheld the end of all my hate, Accursed now he gladly takes my fate I behold His mournful, sunken eyes, I feel loves embrace in deathly sighs The streams of mercy wet my cheek, And I know He bought the peace I seek I spy another seeker standing near, Tears of sorrow replace his fear His angry words that shattered me, Dissolve on the cross I love dearly No more will we be slain by fear, This curse stops right now, right here Free from hatred and the shame, Greatest Grace put out sins evil flame Jesus bade the accuser flee, Forgiveness did work deep in me Freedom is just a prayer away If you’re not too afraid to stray From the hatred you embrace, Then change your mind and face Turn one-eighty to the Son, And let wrath and rage be done
