In the OT tattoos were considered sinful because they were basically a mark of idolatry (they were done to please false gods). As to whether or not they are sinful now, I guess that depends on whether or not you are guilty of idolatry and are they a mark of such? I'm sure there are good arguments on both sides of this coin. Personally I stand a bit in the unknown. I have three tattoos that I got before I gave my life to Christ. Do I imagine I'm going to hell for them? Nope. Would I get another one? Highly unlikely. They serve no purpose, they don't help me in any way, I may have to cover them up for certain events or jobs... they've not done me one iota of good. They are in fact rather pointless other than decoration and then that could easily fall into an issue of vanity. I suppose you could justify a religious tattoo in saying its a good way to start a conversation about Christ... but there are other ways to start that conversation as well - God can reveal them to you. I guess that I don't see a good reason to get one, but I can see pitfalls in getting them. So, for me I think its best not to get them. As to whether or not you'll go to hell... I think the issue is a bit more multi-faceted than simply will this one thing cause me to go to hell? I hope that makes a grain of sense... I'm getting rather tired.
