Well, Thing 2 got another 68 on his math drills. Are these timed? My kids do timed drills for math facts. It's one page, and they're told to go quickly and get as many done as possible in one minute. The idea is to get the facts so ingrained in their heads that they know them without having to think about it. Kath, hope all went well with Larry. Kylie, that's pretty funny. Good for J! On finances...we're doing well so far. We have cheap gas and cheap milk in NJ, which helps. My husband works at a small computer company. The pay isn't what it could be, but he has the flexibility to take side projects that boost our income. (He did the website for our daughter's preschool and instead of getting paid, she goes for free.) I work PT at a college in a stable position. I thought I would have to get a seasonal job to help out with holiday expenses, but it doesn't look like that will be necessary now. Luckily we really don't have any investments so we haven't lost anything there. Han's college fund has suffered a bit- it lost what it had made and is back to the original investment, but it wasn't a huge sum of money anyway. We were able to take advantage of lower housing costs and interest rates to buy a house this summer. The house is closer to work for both of us and closer to shopping, so we are saving on gas. We have cut back significantly on eating out, but that is the only "big" change we have made. We've been very blessed so far!

Noah had his first snow day today. Nick had his second (first one was when Ike knocked out power there).

Kylie - you can share Poppa's favorite with J. "He fancies himself a wit, but he is only half right" Mine always was... "It is the duty of the student Without exception to be prudent. If smarter than the teacher tact Demands that he conceal the fact." They really don't like it when you write that on your tablet in high school....

Wow, snow days. Kylie, I like J's response. My son isn't doing so well on his timed math tests. He knows the facts, just not quickly. He did well on his math testing scores, so hopefully that means that he knows what he needs to. MBee, I think I'll share your favorite with my son, but if I do I will remind him to not write it on his tablet. Oh, wait, he doesn't write anything that isn't absolutely necessary, so no worries there. Those of you who have kids taking high school classes in middle school, do they carry over to the HS GPA? My daughter is taking algebra. She has an A-. I learned that she wasn't taking advantage of the opportunity to make corrections on her tests to raise her grade. I told her she'd better start doing that; that her algebra grade is her most important grade this year since it carries over to her HS GPA. Dee

Here they count for high school credit and are figured into their overall GPA. Ty already has 2 high school credits, one for his two middle school years of German (one year of high school work split into 2 middle school years) and 1 for his year of Algebra in 7th grade. He will not get credit for his year of Geometry that he took in middle school because we chose to have him repeat it this year. Thanks for the reminder tho - I need to figure out what we need to do to make sure he gets credit for those classes. I think we are supposed to sign something if we as his parents want them to count. Today is quiet around my house. One would think I would be getting lots of stuff done, but I'm not. I've been incredibly lazy today. Blessings, Garsy

Here they count for high school credit Garsy, I guess after reading your post I think our's does, but tests the kids before they enter. Ds took Spanish last year and this year and will take Spanish 2 in high school. If you haven't taken Spanish, like dd, you get put into Spanish 1. SO I guess it does count, just in a different way. I'm so confussed!!! I liked k-3rd grade, it seemed to much simpler.

O.K. Question for you, why have you ruled out public school? If the private school isn't working and you didn't feel that homeschool was right for you, why is public school not an option? I'm not trying to stir up debate but really just trying to understand. I know that some public schools really stink quality wise, and that some are concerned with the anti-Christian values taught. So if you don't mind me being nosy I'd like to know. Kim Q Too many kids per teacher. The quality here stinks. The traditional school model is broken, and Brian and I have both experienced that first hand. I guess I can't say we would never use public school, but God would have to clearly tell us to put Noah there and He hasn't. It's not that homeschool wasn't/isn't right for us. When we put him in school in January, *I* was burned out. Noah was doing great academically, but was giving me constant attitude. Brian was working way too much to try to keep our bills paid, and him not being home was not good for Noah's attitude. Now, Brian is home all the time, so that is not an issue anymore. Brian has already stepped up and helped him with his homework and I know he will help with hsing when we go back to that too. The verdict right now is we will go back to hsing. I just don't know when. I don't know if we should stick this year out, even if it is torture for both Noah and I, or if we should pull him out at Thanksgiving or Christmas break. I don't want any hard feelings with the school, especially since I'm on the BOE, but I do not think it is the best thing for Noah anymore. Thanks for telling me. I think you are right that hs might be best for your family. I wonder if he would learn good life lessons from sticking out a situation that isn't the best, or if it would be too much torture? I'll be praying for wisdom on your decision. Kim Q

Keyboarding and Algebra I are the only courses taught in middle school that transfer to HS here. However, they only transfer if the student has a "C" for the year. In addition, Algebra I and II have state tests that have to be passed before you can move to the next class. Geometry is taught between Algebra I and II. B took Algebra I in 8th grade, so he started high school with one credit, and the GPA followed him for that course.

Hi ladies, Just checking in. Basketball season is starting and I hope that my exchange son makes the team. He really wants to play, but if he doesn't, my church's school said he could probably play with them. But I would rather him play with his school as a first choice. My other kids are doing well. Little Kay is just a bundle of love lately. I don't know what happened to her, but she is really needing lots of hugs and kisses, but not crying about it, just happy and content. Kali has been really whiny lately and we can't figure out why but hopefully it is just her testing our limits. Jake is doing well in school and at home. He is getting a D+ in math, but we switched him from regular math to pre-algebra two weeks into the school year so his teacher said this is ok and it will get better. As for me, I am still not myself and just hanging in there.

We just finished our round of fall conferences. The common thread for ALL 4 of my kids? Organization. Not surprised there. I'm one of the most disorganized people on the planet so they come by it honestly. But we all need to work on that so I'll have to figure out something. Zoe needs to work on her comprehension skills. She reads well, above grade level, easily, but has problems with comprehension skills - so we are working on that. Ethan is doing well in everything EXCEPT math. That is odd for us so I'm arranging a meeting with Ethan's math teacher. And organization. His desk looked like it was about, according to his teacher, "throw up!" It was a mess. Aryn was at her conference with us. She is my straight A student. Her teacher is having trouble keeping reading material that is challenging enough for her but that is also age appropriate in the classroom. I guess she has several students that are reading beyond the level of classroom's guided reading materials. Aryn's lexile reading scores are in the same range that Ty's were in late 6th , early 7th grade! It's hard to find stuff that is a challenging read but is also age appropriate and interesting for her. Ty is doing well. I think we've got things figured out for now. He's been handing in homework assignments half done so he doesn't get a zero, thus settling for a bad grade in both Biology and German. That's going to STOP. We think we've come up with a way to garner him some extra credit points for German too. I'm tired. It feels like we were running all day. The kids all had a half day of school today and the younger 3 have tomorrow off. Ty will be in school for half a day tho. He does get a half day off at the end of the school year when the younger three will be in class all day. Blessings, Garsy

Kath-I hope that Larry is doing well. Donna-I hope that the principal quickly determines why the teacher is not having Noah do his school work and why she is not communicating with you about his lack of academic cooperation. It sounds like he is getting away without doing his work all day and that you then have to be the bad guy and make him do his school work. Obviously he is capable or he wouldn't be able to do the work when he is at home. I would be very clear with him that if you bring him home and he does what he is doing to his teacher, there will be problems. I would consider making him prove that he can do his school work, when he is supposed to do his work, before you consider bringing him home. You don't need the strain of his manipulating you. From personal experience it seems that strong willed children always seem to know what buttons to push to get a negative reaction from their parent.

And now, for your reading pleasure (and sharing with your children)... A man is walking home alone late one foggy Halloween night, when behind him he hears: BUMP... BUMP... BUMP... Walking faster, he looks back and through the fog he makes out the image of an upright casket banging its way down the middle of the street toward him. BUMP... BUMP... BUMP... Terrified, the man begins to run toward his home, the casket bouncing quickly behind him. FASTER... FASTER... BUMP... BUMP... BUMP.... He runs up to his door, fumbles with his keys, opens the door, rushes in, slams and locks the door behind him. However, the casket crashes through his door, with the lid of the casket clapping. clappity-BUMP... clappity-BUMP... clappity-BUMP... on his heels, as the terrified man runs. Rushing upstairs to the bathroom, he locks himself in. His heart is pounding; his head is reeling; his breath is coming in sobbing gasps. With a loud CRASH the casket breaks down the door. Bumping and clapping toward him. The man screams and reaches for something, anything, but all he can find is a bottle of cough syrup! Desperate, he throws the cough syrup at the casket... and, The coffin stops . --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
