I have a Big Baby Taylor acoustic, or I should say had because it is broken. I don't know what happened, just pulled it out of the case one day and it was broken. I also have a 4 string Fender Jazz Bass and a 5 string acoustic/electric bass by JB Player.

this is what I play:

70s era Les Paul Deluxe. I think it's a 77.
Traynor Studio Mate combo tube amp that weighs about 10,000 pounds.
An ancient DOD Overdrive-Preamp/250
Thompson Cry Baby Wah Wah
DOD FX76 American Metal distortion pedal
Electra Stereo Flanger
Fender Bronco amp
An old Earth amp that I have to replace scratchy pots someday

The only effect I consistently use is the overdrive preamp

I don't have a regular schedule for replacing strings. I just kinda know. I also feel underneath the strings, and if they feel excessively dented from the frets I'll replace them.

When I used to gig regularly I would change my strings every 3 shows, getting a total of about 15 hours of playing out of them.
I NEVER broke a string live during that time.

When I used to play I'd break a string almost every set. I put on new sets every night and always had spare gits on stage, as well as a restringer ready to hand me a new axe and restring/retune as necessary. In case you can't tell I bang hard on my gits. :)

I use a Warwick Thumb 5 string bass strung up with Elixir Nanoweb roundwound strings, but if I have the $$ I will pick up a set of Ken Smith strings. Otherwise, I also play a Warwick Corvette Fretless strung with Fender Nylon Tapewound. I also use a Warwick "Sweet 25.1" combo amp and run for some effects through a POD6 XTLive, to give the fretless a little extra.

That depends on how much you play and what kind of condition you keep the guitar in.
And your body chemistry. Some people's sweat rusts strings almost immediatly. If that is the case they need to be changed a LOT.

Thanks guys. It sounds like my strings need to be changed, lol. I just don't like changing them, because, for me, it's a big deal. I guess I'm just lazy :(

String a Rickenbacker 12 string or a Bigsby-equipped guitar a couple of times and then your guitar will be nothing.

But you'll probably hate to tune it.

I was offered a Gibson Chet Atkins 12-string for a killer price ($350) many years ago but I passed on it because it just would not stay in-tune for more than 2 songs.
I know that one guitar is not representative of all the rest, but it did not give me a peaceful, easy feeling about ever owning a 12 string.

Yeah, tuning would be rough. But my friend has one, and everytime he plays it, I feel like God has decided to give me a glimpse of heaven. Technically his is an 11 string because his B string keeps breaking, lol.

Eh, I've have several 12 string acoustics and a couple Ric's and honestly didn't ever have a problem with them staying in tune.

I just thought the Ric's tailpiece design was absolutely idiotic for ease of stringing. The add to the headstock "canals"... restringing was a job for a Saturday afternoon.

Taylor 310CE-LTD (2002, Maple)
Taylor 310CE-LTD (2003, Koa)
Fender Strat (1983 Japan, Red)
Sigma DR3 (1970 Rosewood)

Fender Amp (FM 25 DSP?)
Crate Amp (TD-35?)
Behringer 4-input DI Box

I used to have a Digitek RP-100, but it died.

From the DI Box I plug into our sound system.

Taylor recommends Medium Elixer Nano's, and suggests that only medium strings should ever be used. I'm very happy with the Nano's.

The Fender and the Sigma both have Ernie Ball Light strings. Next time I think I'll try the Fender strings on the Strat. The Ernies don't have a lot of punch.

I'm considering replacing the machine head tuners on the Sigma with something better.

A friend of mine has a Taylor 12-string. It stays in tune extremely well. We used to have a band member that had some other brand of 12-string (Takamine?). The running joke in the band was:

Q: How long does it take to tune a 12-string?
A: Nobody knows!

Here's a question:

When I got my amp, it was as quiet as a grave, even on high gain unless I was stood too close (valve amp head, 2 channel, 2 gains per channel).

Got some effects, some in front, some in loop, still totally quiet.

THEN tried a power supply for the FX.

Audible hum at high gain. But only from FX in front of amp, not loop.
Tolerable, but a nuisance.

A few weeks ago I discovered the hum had got significantly louder, to the point that ANY gain caused a hum, getting progressively worse to the point where high gain was unusable.

Dry sound still seems fine.

So now I've got 2 power supplies, one for the loop, one for the in-front FX. Better, but still a hum.

a-Any suggestions as to the quietest power supply out there? Got 5 pedals to power, wah, overdrive, tuner, chorus, delay.

b-Why the change in hum levels? Could a valve be starting to go? Can't really discern a problem when just guitar into amp.

What kind of power supply and what pedals are you using? Boss pedals are known to hum if you don't use their power supply or something that provides suitable current. Have you considered Voodoo Lab's Pedal Power?

Boss??? No Boss on my pedalboard!

I sought out bypass pedals far & wide, on a quest that covered the far reaches of the Orient, the plains of the American Mid-West, the green hills of ol' Blighty...(shakes head)...

anyway I use, in order:
-Guitar
-Budda Wah
-Xotic BB Preamp
-Amp (Elmwood Modena 60)
-FX loop
-Korg Pitchblack tuner
-Marshall Supervibe
-DLS Echotap

powered by two Diago Powerstations (one in front, one in loop), which are supposed to be the quietest daisy chain power supplies. I beg to differ.

Thought about the Voodoo Labs, or BBE do one, and there's a T-Rex power supply too, but they're all in the $200 price bracket whitch seems excessive, at least at the moment.

dr. nick, a couple things I'll toss out there...
Be sure that your power supply is "regulated". Many power supplies are non-regulated, meaning they'll say that they output 9vdc (or whatever) yet if you stick a meter on them it will read 12 volts or 13.5 volts or whatever. This puts the voltage regulation only on the pedal and can be a generator of excessive noise.
If the pedal needs 9vdc, give it 9vdc.
Second, are both supplies plugged into the same power source or outlet? They should be. Same polarity or direction? They should be (even though it's ac, still...).
Third, if you're going through a plug strip, be sure that it's a good quality one. A cheap plug strip with little to no filtering can add more noise than you'd expect.

I have several guitars

Martin D-18GE "the Boomstick"
Martin Backpacker "Hatchet"
Eastman Strings John Pisano Signiture "Thom"
Yamaha FG325 "Lovey"
Guitarras Andalucia Serenata (no name yet)
Fender frettless Jazz bass "Ginger"

My boy has a Martin LXM and some cheap first act guitar.

The D-18 is my main axe loud and versital. The backpacker got me through my deployment. The eastman is a made in China had carved archtop. The loudest unplugged archtop I've ever played and a great sound. Then you plug it in and WOW. When I was shopping for an archtop my wife kept asking me why did I want one like that. Then she heard that one and her comment was "now I know".

So how do you like that Martin backpacker? I looked at it about 4 years ago and absolutely hated the sound and the feel (and I LOVE Martins).

I ended up getting a Montana Amigo travel axe which I string with nylon strings. It works very well and has a pretty good sound for the size.

BTW, Phil Keaggy played a bit on that guitar. Said he owns a Montana mandolin.

Sounds like some sort of grounding problem, which could be coming from anywhere. Have you tried removing pedals one at a time so see if one of them is the culprit?

Yup, took the pedalboard apart in case there were proximity issues.

It's got to be the power supply. Shame, it gets rave reviews on harmony central, but clearly doesn't get along with my amp.

What's really annoying is, I found an old power transformer from a telephone, that's 9v, but centre-positive polarity, and the one pedal I can use it with (DLS Echotap - can take either polarity) is silent with it, but hums with the Diago powerstation. maybe the Diago uses switching and the phone transformer is toroidal(?).

But it can only deliver 300mA, which wouldn't be enough for the whole board.

So I think they'll appear on ebay soon, and I'll get a BBE Supa charger I think.

When's the last time you bought new cables?

Are you sure you don't have a speaker cable in there somewhere?

I have a question for the guitar players.

When people ask you to join their group for playing/singing for events (specifically church related), do you say yes, or are you rather picky about what groups you will agree to play/sing with?

I've gotten rather picky, to the point that I'm starting to look rude, which is ok with me I guess. I was just wondering what y'all do in these situations.

I guess I'm politely picky. Thankfully, my schedule and availability allows me to be. I made a decision years ago to put my family first and that has had me turning down a few gigs, but oh well.
If you have a family and you don't wish to play a particular event, schedule yourself some family time.
If you don't have a family, go get yourself adopted or married or something.
