bargain bin/ discount books > art > poetry > graphic novels > magazines

(usually with some theology and cooking thrown in somewhere)

Depends on the bookstore. Our Books-A-Million doesn't really have a lot in their "new books" section, but they do have a rather large Christian books section. So I often head there first. Whereas Borders and Barnes and Noble have larger places where they display new books, and I usually head there first.

There are very few places I don't browse through in a bookstore. I usually avoid the New Age/Alternative Religions section. And the manga section, which I actually might like to browse, but there always seem to be some weirdly dressed teenagers over there, reading w/o buying.

At half-price books I go right back to the Clearance shelf and stay there the whole time.

For Barnes and Noble/Borders I usually end up with the kids first so I'm back there. Then I make a round of literature and history and if I have time science fiction, writing, nature, and science.

In a Christian bookstore, the fiction section. I love historical novels.

In a non Christian bookstore, the craft section or pictorial travel books.

Science Fiction/Fantasy, usually. Sometimes I go straight to History.

You would have loved the original Half-Price Books. I started shopping there when I was a kid. It was an old laundromat they turned into a bookstore, and I mean barely converted from a laundromat -- meaning the washers and dryers were removed and a few floor mats put down. The shelves were basically anything they could find that worked -- crates, cinder blocks and some old cheap wood, boxes turned on their sides, folding tables from the laundromat. They even had old grocery carts with books in them. Then there were old chairs that looked like something from a garage sale scattered around the store. It was great.

That sounds like a coffee shop we have downtown. All that's missing is the half-built VW bus.

I love, love, love Half-Price Books. We stop at the one in Madison (huge university town) and I can get all the big historical, literary stuff for a $1 or 2.

They don't have it in Colorado. The Tattered Cover in Denver is just not the same thing. So I make sure to go there when I visit Texas.

***Drooooooooooooool*** We kind of had a store like this for a short time in the town I grew up in, and it was sooooooo fun... as is a trip to Half Price itself My dad introduced me to it, and I occasionally get there when I visit a certain friend 'up north'... I dig through the clearance, then I go check out sheet music/books, then religious, the look for a few fave authors, then kids, then I wander aimlessly through the stacks... so much fun!!!

When I lived south of San Diego, the bookstore I went to there I did in basically the same order, but I didn't buy nearly as much- Half Price or less is good , though I'd sometimes get ideas for books to look for...

I start out in the aisles with the New Releases and Hot Topics displays. Then I move to Bargain Books. After that Religion, Kids and Non-Fiction.

Educational ones - mostly geography and travel and ones I can use for teaching stuff for Brain Bowl.

Then it's the bargain ones.

In a Christian book store, I stare at the bible I can't afford and then I go into the apologetic section.

In a bookstore, I got into the classics/fictions/ and sales section.

New releases, sci-fi/fantasy, romance, and then wherever else I feel like.
I love bookstores so I could spend hours in one.
