Yes, but can you octally describe how colorful the leaves are in your area with obtaining a migraine? A thousand digits describing God's creation? Just wondering. There's probably a converter program to help...

Wow, it's quiet in here again. . .

The trick-or-treaters are just trickling in. . . I might be stuck with a lot of candy which could be a really bad thing! Chocolate is my weakness. Guess I should have bought Skittles and Starbursts instead of Snickers and Milky Ways!

Me too!!! There are so many kids in this new complex where I live so I thought I would get hit hard so I really stocked up on lots of candy. Like three of those huge multi pack type bags. So I have about 7-8 lbs of candy and NO kids showed up. Yikes!

I told my dad I'll have to give it away as my Christmas gifts now since this move kind of left the pocket book a little anemic. I asked him what color jaw breaker he wanted and I would try and color co-ordinate it with some bubble gum.

The flow picked up quite a bit. All I have left is a few Tootsie Rolls. . . I came to the conclusion that since it was a Friday night and since we're still on daylight savings time, the kids were out later. . .

Speaking of daylight savings time. . . tomorrow night we get an extra hour of sleep!!!!! Woohoo!! I need it so bad. . . Couldn't come at a better time.

We have a fair bit of candy left as well. That's why I bought Tootsie Pops this year, I like them but I don't crave them, you know? Also, as candy goes, they're not too bad for the waistline.

Now, the candy my son got last night, on the other hand, is calling my name! Lot's of chocolate in that orange plastic pumpkin on the kitchen table at 5:30 a.m. with noone around but me and the cat.

With computers. I'm not exactly sure where octal comes in, but hex is used a lot. About the most basic unit of storage is one byte, which is composed of 8 binary bits, so it can represent the numbers 0-255. (255 = 2^8 - 1). That can be expressed as just a two digit hex number, with 255 = FF. It's really just a compact way of expressing binary. each hex digit directly corresponds to 4 binary bits or half a byte.

For the benefit of our non-geek members.....

Octal was used in the earlier machines (computers). The use of octal or hexadecimal is driven by the underlying hardware of the processor itself. All computers use base 2 as their native math system. Octal (being 2^3) and hexidecimal (being 2^4) are very easy to translate into machine code. so rather than dealing with long strings of ones and zeros in binary (usually grouped by 4's)
0110 1000 0110 1001 0010 0000 0111 0100 0110 1000 0110 0101 0111 0010 0110 0101

we can deal with shorter strings of digits and letters in hex (usually grouped by twos)
68 69 20 74 68 65 72 65

The beauty of hex (or octal) is that the translation from binary to hex and back is simple. Each group of 4 binary digits equals one of the hex digits.. (To do an octal translation we'd group the binary by threes)

This string of numbers is actually "hello there" in ascii format. But the machine doesn't read letters, only ones and zeros.

There was a time waaaaay back when I had to learn a little about this. I was in my first year of computer programming and it was a part of one of the classes. We had some geeks at the college where I worked, and we some fun discussions about this on occasion. Amazing how much of it I lost over the years; guess it's a right brain/left brain thing. These days I feel much more comfortable talking about feelings, emotions and all kinds of complex things, but when it comes to math, I need my calculator to do my mileage forms.

Good morning, everyone! It's absolutely beautiful this morning... just got back from a walk and have the windows wide open. There were no trick-or-treaters for me last night; I wasn't home. Went to see my son last night and he was gone... probably to a party or something.

Girl, you are NOT thinking like a teenager!! That would be the COOLEST place in the world to go for halloween. Here's what my dad would do: Back in the day when they used styrofoam, mom would get maniquin heads from wherever they sold wigs. Dad would wrap a white blanket around the bottom and attach it to a fishing pole and a hook on the top of the front porch. Yup! When people came to the door, he'd reel it in, and the ghost would pop up!! The kids thought it was cool, the adults fell on their bottoms!! Just imagine how much fun a funeral home could be!!!!!

Brings back great memories doesn't it?

Um......not really!

I don't think I want to repeat that.

Hey, Becky. After a year of inactivity, threads are purged. As they are deleted, our post count goes down along with them. At the end of every month, these threads are closed, so last years' chat and game threads, among others, were purged last night.

Now, some people's counts will never go down to zero. Why? There are threads that stay running year-round (like the Smile thread); as long as they aren't deleted, a person maintains their posts.

So, until you've been here a year, you won't notice any drop in your post count.

Sara, I believe that anybody can start the chat/game threads, we just don't have anyone to close down the old ones, so we're on the honor system here.

Kimberly, hey, I'm going to be around all day... wanna stay up until you reach super-status??
