ORIGINAL: cynthia According to the Apologia web-site, the student must take both Biology and Chemistry before taking Advanced Biology. I think there must be chemistry in the Advanced Biology text and she will not be ready for that. She really enjoys science and I have certain views about science and believe that is something very important for my children to take. I understand not everyone feels that way, but it's one of my "issues." You might see if you can look at the text and see just what is included from Chemistry. I am taking college level Anatomy and Physiology, and while we did use some Chem in the first chapters there is not enough that a person couldn't just learn it as they went. It certainly isn't stoichiometry or anything. ETA- Is she taking the courses online? Hm, I guess this doesn't have to be decided until months down the road, so I could check to see if anyone has that book that could let me look at it. However, someone sent me an e-mail that calmed me down a lot and I'm feeling much more relaxed now. I think we'll see how pre-algebra goes and then decide in late spring or summer, depending on how far she is in math by then. At the rate she's been going, she could be done with this book by early spring.

My DD is doing Pre-Algebra now and it looks a lot like what I did in Alg I. I didn't have pre-algebra but took Alg in 8th grade. I had the same goals for her so we starte pre-algebra this year. SHe's enjoying and doing well with it.

Hi everyone. NotaLisa That is so frustrating with the bank and doctors stuff. Hope it gets worked out soon. I am a little frustrated with my 11 year old. She has been complaining of being sick since Wednesday. She complained of stuffy ears, dizziness, upset tummy and a lot of tummy pain. So I took her to the Dr last night and there is nothing wrong they said it might be a virus gave her a shot for upset tummy and sent her home. So we haven't had school since Wednesday, We really need her to get better or stop dragging it out which ever she is doing.

I remember that song.If your name is Lisa, it is hard to avoid. I wouldn't think that you would HAVE to have finished Algebra to take High school Chemistry. I could be wrong, but I would think that the heftiest algebra that she would have to do would be to just be able to balance equations which I would think that she could figure out after taking pre-algebra. I am always skeptical of prerequisites anyway. When I was in college, they told me that I couldn't take apologetics until I had Chemistry. I had to twist their arms and sign a waiver, but I was finally allowed to take it. I thoroughly enjoyed it and was right breezed through it. I have no idea why they thought one needed chemistry to understand it and do well.

That has got to be awful... to be constantly confused with your YOUNGER sister. I have heard about kids living in the shadow of their older sibling, but it has to be doubly annoying when the sibling is younger. I am starting to think that you need your own identity! LOL!

Sigh... I grew up being refered to as "so-and-so's" little sister. I never had my own identity... Ds3 did a 5K race this morning. With an 11am start, it was already pretty warm. He didn't do as well as he had hoped, but I thought he ran a very solid race. 36:something. AND he got 2nd in his age group!!! This is the first time he's placed in a race.

My dad had no problem with my name until I was nearly 15 and my sister was born. He would contantly get our names mixed up. Then I had my daughter and he even gets my name mixed up with hers. My mom always mixed my name up with her younger sisters. Everytime we went to see her family or if she was even thinking about her, she started calling me "Joanie". My granddad had a rather simple solution. He just called my aunt and all of us granddaughters "Sis"

My grandfather had five daughters. He called them all sis. When his sons married, their wives were also sis. When they had children, the girls were called sis. When my mother married my father, she was quite offended at being called sis. She thought he didn't remember her name, which was possible.

We used to laugh at Grandma because she would start at the top of the list of names and go through all of them until she got to the right one. I don't laugh anymore because I do the same thing with my kids! Grandma had four daughters--Mary, Pat, Cindy and Phyllis. Cindy passed away five years ago. For some reason, since then Grandma calls Phyllis Cindy. We're not sure why she does that. It's not dementia, as she's clear about everything else.

Good morning. I know that I have discussed this before. But today, I need to vent or something. Last year we went through a bunch of tests for DS (age 11) at the children's hospital, mainly for Aspergers Syndrome. At the end, they determined that he probably doesn't have Aspergers (but did not completely rule it out), but they did determine that he is gifted (high IQ) and has a mild case of ADHD. We started him on meds, which helped quite a bit. He told me, "Mom, it's like there are too halves of my brain. One is trying to listen to you and do what you say, but the other half is thinking about [insert here all the things he is currently inventing, building, creating]". His brain goes SO fast and in so many directions, he has a hard time focusing on any one thing. Anyway, one of my big concerns is the fact that he does not seem to have the ability to "see the big picture". It is very difficult, and this morning we had a blow up over this. I am so confused... I do not know if he is UNWILLING or UNABLE, when it comes to understanding things - taking responsibility for his actions, etc. I don't want to punish him if he is unable, but don't want to be easy on him when he is capable but just does not want to. Thanks for listening.

misaham, I don't really know what to tell you. Maybe you could tell him if he can get all the stuff you need him to do finished, he can take one day a week and have a "creative" day. quote:

I don't laugh anymore because I do the same thing with my kids! his, it gets worse! Wait until you have about a dozen grandsons!!! Cindy, did you lose a tv station anywhere? If you lost one from Erie (channel 8?) I found it on my tv this morning. I also found a Cleveland station... This would be OK if I lived in either one of those states, but we are in Michigan and I was looking for the local news. All I am using are rabbit ears on my tv, too.... We moved close to the lake and we are actually the last house before the lake. This might make us the last house in the United States. There is a park, the harbor and Lake Huron. Any houses to the east of us have to be in Canada. Oh, that reminds me, I also found a lot of tv stations in French. If anyone finds any Detroit, Flint or Saginaw stations, please send them back to me, OK?

I think shadowspring is right! Ds just turned 15 and is in the 9th grade. I think he is now seeing the "big picture"! He knows he needs to get a lot of stuff done before he goes to college.
