Do you tie your tie in a single or double windsor knot?

John_O -> RE: Tie-tying: single or double windsor (9/29/2008 11:33:39 AM)

At least I think it 's a double windsor?

1love1God1way -> RE: Tie-tying: single or double windsor (9/29/2008 12:35:41 PM)

Single. It's all I know.

DaveW -> RE: Tie-tying: single or double windsor (9/29/2008 12:43:34 PM)

I only know a full windsor knot.

What is a "double?"

iwillfearnoevil -> RE: Tie-tying: single or double windsor (9/29/2008 12:54:45 PM)

i have no idea as i only wear one a couple times a year at most ... probably whatever is easiest to tie ...

Maybe that's what it's called. Half and full. I've heard them referred to as single and double. But half/full sounds more right.

APZR -> RE: Tie-tying: single or double windsor (9/29/2008 2:20:46 PM)

I gave up the tie wearing jobs long ago. Dress code for my company is "business casual" with nice looking slacks, and a collard button shirt. Collard golf shirts in the summer is fine. No tennis shoes, no blue jeans, and shorts only for golf days. It's just too hot in the southern summers to wear suits and ties.

9drtr -> RE: Tie-tying: single or double windsor (9/29/2008 7:27:07 PM)

I use a Windsor knot if the tie is long enough, the half-Windsor otherwise. The difference is negligible, because both produce a symmetrical knot, unlike the four-in-hand which is the knot that most people call the half-Windsor. Which means that the half-Windsor is the knot that most people think is the full (or double) Windsor.

Confused yet? If (k)not, I'll try again.

GroupW -> RE: Tie-tying: single or double windsor (9/29/2008 7:37:49 PM)

I like a compact, neat, symmetrical knot. Half windsor only for me.

Oh well that's interesting. I didn't realize that. So if a four-in-hand is what most call a half-windsor, and a half is what most people call full, what's a full??????

willfs -> RE: Tie-tying: single or double windsor (9/29/2008 8:50:18 PM)

I couldn't really vote because I tie both ways. I am a tall guy. If the tie is short I have to tie it single but if it is long I tie it double.

you could answer "whichever my hands do that day"

OneJohn410 -> RE: Tie-tying: single or double windsor (9/29/2008 11:55:56 PM)

Do knot let your left hand know what your right hand is doing. Oh wait! That's for titheing, not the tie-thing! Now, see what has happened?!??

Chrisstar, you are one to like a man in a tie. Do you like the bow, or the no-bow? Have you tugged a guy around by a tie without killing him before? Just kidding. Oh, thanks alot, btw. Now I'll have to Yahoo or Google ties to get schematics on all the knots to really impress the ladies.

What a great question for us!
OneJohn410

I brought up the single Windsor score to tie the double, btw. I'm not telling what I know and don't know.[:)]

I thought the half windsor only wrapped one side before the final circuit; which makes the knot definately lop-sided. How can you get symmetrical with that?

makarizo -> RE: Tie-tying: single or double windsor (9/30/2008 7:07:01 AM)

if I wore a fat tie, I would probably use a full windsor knot, fat ties, and fat knots are not for me.
if a half knot does not look symmetrical, it was tied wrong.
(lol, good point DaveW)

ekserekseez -> RE: Tie-tying: single or double windsor (9/30/2008 7:22:25 AM)

It depends on the shirt collar and the tie fabric. Although I usually use a full windsor, sometimes I use a half, and occasionally even a non-windsor knot like a four-in-hand.

DaveW -> RE: Tie-tying: single or double windsor (9/30/2008 7:59:05 AM)

What is a four-in-hand knot? Links?

I only know the windsor.

ekserekseez -> RE: Tie-tying: single or double windsor (9/30/2008 8:08:35 AM)

The Four-in-hand is good for really wide 70's style ties, or for ones made of very thick or bulky fabric.

Lots of knots with illustrations and videos at http://www.tie-a-tie.net/

iluvatar -> RE: Tie-tying: single or double windsor (9/30/2008 10:01:34 AM)

Full Windsor.

I only tie a double Windsor. The best way to tell the difference is that a single Windsor is almost always crooked (the knot slants) whereas the double is symmetrical.

I think what you are calling a double I have known as a full. The half windsor always looks crooked to me so I think that is what you call a single.

Did you look at the tie website?

stamper_ben -> RE: Tie-tying: single or double windsor (10/1/2008 2:39:25 PM)

I find the bolero tie the easiest to tie...

uncabeeil -> RE: Tie-tying: single or double windsor (10/1/2008 4:15:52 PM)

When I'm forced to wear one, I always tie a full Windsor. That's how I was taught. After 12 years of Catholic school and 6 years at a job that required one, I only wear a tie to weddings and funerals.

Tie the lopsided knot you call a Windsor. That's a four-in-hand.

Actually according to the website linked above, the four-in-hand is the other half of a half windsor.
