I *love* little people!!! Mary is getting the busy day home for Christmas and that will pretty much complete our collection. Between garage and good as new sales I have managed to collect just about everything. We have the zoo, the Noah's Ark, the garage, the castle, the farm, the bus, the Nativity set, and other little addon's for some of them. I'm just lucky Mary likes them as much as I do! Dh always teases me that we are going to have to set up an entire room in our new house devoted to little people.

I keep them packed away and she gets one to play with at a time and when she gets bored with it I bring out another one. She will spend 20-30 minutes sitting and playing independently with a set, I love it.

I haven't been to a movie in a very very long time. I wanted to go see "Australia", but Jason isn't keene on the idea. He thinks it'll be too long and he doesn't think it'll be worth it. The only time I've been away from Jadon is to go to the grocery store or something like that. I feel like I NEED to go have a date with my husband and watch something GOOD. I haven't decided if Australia is worth the battle or if I should look to watch something else. Jadon is eating solids now, drinking watered down juice, so I can nurse him and leave him with my MIL for a short stint of time without worry he'll need to be nursed. She can pacify him with juice or solids if she had to. I'll just have to nurse him RIGHT before we leave.

Does Jason just not want to see that movie or is he opposed to going on a date?

Poop question:

Mary is 17 months. How many times do your toddlers poop a day? Mary is pooping 3-4 times a day right now and it is rarely solid. She is also rather gassy. I haven't been feeding her anything different but her poops used to be a lot more solid. Do you think I should be concerned?

When mine were that age, they'd poop just once, possibly but rarely twice, per day. The fact that it's not solid, and is gassy, would give me cause for concern. For how long has it been going on? Could it be a bug or has it been going on longer than a bug would last?

Sorry Chelsea, I can't help you with your question, as far as I can remember Akeelah's been a once a day pooper (I obviously have a selective memory!)

But I love the photo of Mary with the books in your blog. I always find Akeelah like that and it's the best thing ever!

Chelsea, Levi has been like that off and on since he had a bad tummy bug in July. I notice he is not dealing with dairy well anymore and he used to have no problem. When I open acidophillus capsules into his milk sippy, his poops get more formed. If you take him off dairy for a couple days and they get harder, you probably have the culprit. Whether you decide to just limit the dairy intake or try the acidophillus would be up to you...but it worked for me.

You have kids who will look at books and not tear them up? I am insanely jealous. Levi destroyed his Brown Bear book today, and he LOVES that book! Sigh. No more books in his crib at nap time...

Nathan has been known to nab me while I'm on the toilet, hand me Green Eggs and Ham and say "Book?". He figures he has a captive reader.

She gets very very little dairy. She drinks almond milk and the only other dairy she might get is if it is baked in something. I think I might take her to the doctor if it doesn't get a little more solid in the next few days. She eats a lot of fresh fruit and veggies though, I wonder if that might have something to do with it.

eta: Donna Mary has never ripped a book. I have never had to put my paper backs up where she couldn't reach them or anything like that. Even when she just started crawling she would go over there and look at books, she has always loved them!

I learned the hard way not to put books in the crib at nap time, I had to return a book to the library taped back together!

Though Akeelah generally didn't rip books, it was the one time. She's always been very good and respectful of them, though she does like to draw in them now. I've always left a a box full of books in the living room, until the other day, the 16 month old I look after ripped one up. Now, only the board books come out when she is around (man that child has destroyed a lot of my stuff! )

Levi doesn't usually rip books either, which is why he's allowed to have them at nap time. Or was allowed to have them, anyway. He seems to be getting these "naughty urges" lately...and he actually growls when he gets them. I heard him growling at the book and then before I could get there, he had torn three pages all apart, too badly to tape them. He also growls like that before he is going to claw Esther's nose off her. So when he growls...I pay attention FAST.

I'm replacing the Brown Bear book with the board book version, as a Christmas present. I hope it's not missing any words. I hate when they condense the book just because it's a board book.

Chelsea, maybe it is all the fruits and veggies then. Maybe add in some more whole grains? Hmmm...I'm not sure. Sounds like she has a really good diet though!

Donna, is Levi reacting/acting out from Brians accident?

Chelsea, what other kinds of fiber is Mary getting?

If she were a dog I'd tell you to give her more fiber like canned pumpkin or a real good multi grained, whole grain bread.

But, she's not a dog

No, I don't think so. He's so young that I think he doesn't really remember anything before the accident, KWIM? Maybe a reaction to Esther and him no longer being the baby, but really, the things that he's doing are not unusual developmentally. I always seem to get the "lively" ones. From that new avatar of yours, it looks like you might have one of those too.

I have to admit, she does growl sort of already.

I've kind of taught her to when she gnaws on my knuckles to growl like a dog. I'm pretty sure it will come back to bite me in the behind but it's cute for now.

It makes sense now that you said about Esther being the new baby. I nannied for an 8 year old and 4 month old for a few months and the older girl would pinch the baby on purpose to make him cry so she could soothe him.. it was weird.

Nathan seems to have learned something new. He stood in the tub and looked down at himself, then started and stopped his pee, looking at the stream. It was like he was cognizant of the fact that he could pee at will, provided there was urine in his bladder. When he was peed out, he kept trying, then looked at me and said "it's stuck!", which is his all-purpose phrase for something that won't move or work.

Now, I don't encourage peeing in the tub, but awareness of ones ability to control such functions does seem like step in the right direction of potty training, no?

Yes absolutely Ruth. Maybe not the best timing, with you being almost due, but it would not be a bad idea IMO to start talking about potties and stuff with him, and maybe sitting him on one occasionally (no pressure - just to sit there to see what it's like)/

Kim - he's opposed to the movie; not the date.

You guys get gold stars!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Chelsea - Sorry, I have no advice! :(

Poor Jadon has the worst diaper rash. I pm'd Sarah to get her advice. I tried the cornstarch. I'm praying it works! The poor kid was inhaling in pain every time he went to the bathroom, we changed his diaper, etc. Nothing worked - lanolin, burts bees, etc.

Jae is he getting teeth? The last time Mary got teeth her bum was *horrible* and I couldn't do anything to help it. A few people tried to tell me that teething doesn't cause bum rash but it disappeared once the teeth came through so I'm pretty confident that's what it was.

Jae, if it continues, you can also use Dermoplast on his bottom...it's in the first aid section at Walmart or the pharmacy. It's a spray on pain reliever. I also give ibuprofen when it's that bad, to help with the inflammation. And the plain cornstarch, like Sarah said.

Chelsea, I've heard people say that teething doesn't cause that also. Baloney, I say. All my kids get acid poo when they're teething, and the diaper rash to go with it.

chelsea - No teeth that I *know* of. He just broke his sixth tooth a week ago! He won't let me look in his mouth so it's hard to say. The ONLY time we can REMOTELY look is teeth brushing time after bath time.

I have struggled with his diaper rash for MONTHS, but it's never ever been THIS bad this long. He did poo three times today. He normally has one poo day where he gets it all out and then doesn't poo for several days.

donna - I feel hesitant to give him pain reliever. He practically lived off of it when he was teething and that seemed to be back to back. I give him motrin. Should that be a concern? I had dermoblast after the baby. I couldn't tell if it worked. Does it work? and it IS okay to give a baby?

Oh and PS - DONNA - That is absolutely WONDERFUL about your sister being pregnant!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am REJOICING for her!!!

Motrin is ibuprofen, just a brand name of it. It's okay to give it back to back when they need it. Teething or butt rash that make them miserable qualifies. If you were in pain, you'd take something, right? In proper dosage, it's fine.

Yes, the dermoplast does work. It's for minor injuries, burns (even sun burns!), stitches, etc. It does help relieve the immediate pain while you can get the ibuprofen working. I would not give Tylenol for this kind of thing, as it is not an anti-inflammatory and that is what you want.

Also, when he poops, you probably want to give him a warm bath each time instead of wiping the poop off with a wipe. The wiping hurts. Warm water is more soothing, and you can put baking soda in the water also.

And to your PS...yeah, me too!

Jae, did you ever try gentian violet? Biruk has a tendency to get yeasty yucky rashes, and that's the only thing that really helps. It also helps with wounds that just don't want to heal--Biruk had a raw spot behind his ear a few months ago that just would not dry up and heal, and gv was what did the trick.
