I can't shower in any less than 20 minutes (that includes drying off and getting dressed.)

Well, you could always give it a try and see if David enjoys being in the bathroom with you. Maybe he'll like the sound of running water. I completely understand why you don't want to hear him cry, Emily, but part of being a good mom is taking care of yourself, and showering a few times a week gets included in that, I think. I'm sorry things are so tough for you right now. I hope you are able to get some help perhaps, maybe grandma or a trusted friend?

ORIGINAL: Yachaddm We've talked endlessly about it. Our compromise was almost exactly that- 5 min of crying, then we intervene, but every day CIO still comes up after a certain amt of time. I get you. What seems reasonable and logical in the clear light of night gets real murky real quick when fatigue and sleep deprivation sets in. I totally understand that. My husband is like yours in many ways. A great man, such a good husband and father, but crying and sleep deprivation get him upset pretty quick. He slept on the couch last night, for a number of reasons, but the biggest one was Nathan's nightmares (at least that's what I think was causing it, I really don't know). I'm glad you all got a good night's sleep last night. It makes all the difference.

I have tried putting him in his bouncy seat while I shower. That usually works. He is just being extra clingy and fussy this week.

ORIGINAL: manda59 I found the Avent teats (nipples) the best for my two as well. I also liked it that they did spouted teats for later on when you wanted to get them used to the idea of drinking from a cup. Oh yeah, I forgot about that. The sippy cups and bottles are completely interchangable. The teats (LOL, that's a funny word) on the sippies can go on the bottles, the handles on the sippies can go on the bottles too, and the nipples and caps on the bottles can go on the sippy cups. Manda, did ever use the Avent sippy cups? Mine started to leak after a while. Maybe boiling them warped them.

Manda, the 5 min. includes any fussing leading up to crying, but yes, it's too long for me too, hence the compromise. We don't ever let him get hysterical, and if that seems to be happening after only a minute, we go right in. Dave's much better about soothing him while he's in his crib than I am. I always want to pick him up. Yeah, Dave's not an advocate of co-sleeping, and we're both afraid he'd roll on Josiah (he's a big guy who sleeps deeply)but he mainly slept in J's room because it is a bit quieter, even though he could still hear him. Nicole , the time is spent feeding, walking, etc. He does fall asleep and I put him down in his crib, but that usually only lasts about 5 min. before he's up again. The other night we did this for 9 hours... Most nights it lasts about 5-6 hrs. He has been doing it pretty consistently for about a week, except for last night. Dave doesn't want him to CIO, but that seems to be his go-to answer when we've tried feeding, walking, soothing, etc. and Josiah still seems unable to stay asleep. Ruth, exactly!! We establish a plan in the morning, and then in the middle of the night it gets tossed out in frustration. ((hugs)) Hoping both our boys sleep tonight. Erin, WOOHOO!! I'm so excited to hear you're home!!!

ORIGINAL: EmilyAnn I am not comfortable letting David cry for 20 minutes while I shower. We're all different I guess. I was battling post natal depression with my first baby, and I needed to be able to have a bath and wash my hair in order to feel good about myself. So, though I wasn't happy about letting Jonathan cry, to me at that time my sanity and well-being mattered more - because really, at the end of the day, he'd have cried a lot more if I'd had a breakdown and had to be admitted to hospital. If you're not comfortable, that's fine, so long as you know that it isn't wrong to let your baby cry sometimes and that it really is OK to put yourself and your own needs first sometimes. And besides, if they're in the bathroom with us it's not like we've gone off and left them.

Nathan woke up early from his nap, and very cranky. He didn't even want to be held. He's all over the map these days with naps, somedays it's 1 hour, somedays I have to wake him up 'cause I can't let him go over 3 hours. I thought he'd sleep longer because of the bad night last night, but I don't know. I'm letting him watch an episode of Word World to wake up a little bit, then we might get out. Oh! And we're getting his "big boy room" ready. We have furniture and bedding selected (I think), curtains and a decent idea of paint color. Now I'm cleaning out the spare room, and Greg will move the heavy stuff.

Actually a slow flow nipple isnt good for him because if it takes too long and he works too hard he gets bored and just goes to sleep. A medium to fast flow nipple is working well. I tried the Playtex bottles, with the slow flow and the variable flow nipples. I though he was doing good, he was sucking and sucking but after 20 minutes he had only gotten 5-10 mls (I couldnt tell just how much he was getting because of the collapsible bag thing), though they make work better for us when we have more than 50mls in there. He did okay with an Avent nipple this morning. Though I am finding the clear silicone nipples arent good for him, they are too soft and thus he doesnt get the stimulation needed to remind him to suck (a preemie thing). We keep ending back up with the ones from the hospital, they are made by Enfamil and are the yellowish ones. My MIL is currently in Walmart trying to find us an equivalent. I dont think the flow is causing his gas because generally he's a very slow feeder, rarely gulps. When we "help" him by "milking" the nipple (one of the ways we got him out of NICU...)he can handle the volume, he just tires of the sucking. FIL was just here and fixed the solution on the basinett...he made a second "board" that goes under the mattress...the way its made the main one just kind of hangs in a fabric sling so we made one to go on top and propped that one up. I think I am just going to buy a sleep wedge for the pack and play..research shows I can get one for ~$20.

Emily if he likes the bouncy seat, put him in that in the bathroom while you are in there and try and be as quick as possible. That's what I did, I also sang songs, made funny noises etc. It will be ok if he is crying a little bit while you are in the shower, you are still there watching him but you do need to take care of you too, that's how depression can set in... I am praying for you!! Megan- seeing Dave is better at soothing him, why not try letting him do it through the night on his days off for a couple of days and see if that helps? Consistency is the key also with babies. You might just have to keep going in and being a little strong, popping him back down, patting, rubbing etc and just ease out as he is slowly going to sleep. When you put him down after holding him how long has been asleep in your arms for? Do you leave your hands on him for a minute as you put him down so he doesn't feel you leave all of a sudden? can you put rolled up towels on either side of him so he feels secure? Do you wrap him? Ruth- I am sorry things are the way they are. You are in my prayers!!

ORIGINAL: Yachaddm Just at night. He naps fine during the day. Then I wonder if it's at all possible that something you're eating could be upsetting his system, since it only occurs at night. One of the breastfeeding ladies could probably advise you on this. It might not be this, but if it was me, I'd be giving it some consideration.

When you put him down after holding him how long has been asleep in your arms for? It varies. Sometimes he's just groggy and not asleep, sometimes he's been asleep 1 min., or 5, or 15. I've been trying to see what works best for him, and so far, nothing does consistently. quote:
Do you leave your hands on him for a minute as you put him down so he doesn't feel you leave all of a sudden? can you put rolled up towels on either side of him so he feels secure? Do you wrap him? I haven't tried the first two- thanks! He absolutely hates to be swaddled. He has since birth- he likes his arms to be free. quote:

It might not be this, but if it was me, I'd be giving it some consideration. That's what we thought when he had his first few tough nights a few weeks ago, and I cut out dairy (he seemed to have all the signs of a dairy sensitivity). Then we realized that I have an oversupply issue, and that he may be getting to much foremilk, which can mimic a dairy sensitivity. So, back in went the dairy, and we've been working on the OS issue (block feeding, etc.). His stools are back to a normal color now, and his gas seems much better, it's just these darn wake periods that hung around. At any rate, he had a great night last night (praise God!!), and he and I are off to my parent's for a long weekend. It's a 5 hr drive w/o stops, so pray for a restful baby- I'm a bit nervous traveling w/o Dave for the first time since having Josiah.

Ah, we had a very good night. No nightmares or molars, or whatever is causing the problems. I even slept in a little. dH got up alone at 6am to get ready for work, the poor guy.

We were awakened at 5:30 this morning by a vomitting two-year old. When I left for work, he was acting fine, no fever, sipping his juice and eating some crackers but he's looking rather pale. I'm hoping this morning was just a fluke or that for some reason last night's chilli didn't sit well with him. Please, Lord, don't let this be a stomach bug and if it is, please don't let anyone else get it! --Kat

I ended up skipping lunch yesterday to shower. Chris will be home from work around 4:00 today so he can help then. David didn't sleep well again last night. I think he might be teething.

He did settle down, actually, more quickly then I expected. I think sometimes we have to make different decisions, because the status quo isn't working. Maybe we're tired and frustrated and we try something out. And that's okay.
