Megan, do you have a guest room or something where you can go with Josiah if he wakes? B/c dh works and really needs his sleep, but I'd rather not let Caden CIO, I have opted to just utilize the guest room. Caden is actually doing really well the last few nights, but we usually end up in the guest room at about 5am. It keeps dh happy and I'm happy not letting Caden CIO. Do you think your husband would back off if his own sleep weren't disturbed?

Well, we are having another bad night with Nathan for some reason, and we don't understand why. dH and I are not happy with each other, either, mostly out of fatigue and concern for Nathan's sudden change in sleeping habits. We just need to weather the storm, I suppose.

(((ruth))) do you think maybe Nathan is picking up on the stuff between you and greg maybe? things aren't any better with this marriage too, so I totally feel for you, and I just pray you can get some rest and get things sorted out. It's so hard being tired, pregnant, and having a toddler!

Well, we've been trying real hard to be civil and to spend lots of time together. Greg got home early last night, and we actually had a nice evening as a threesome. Greg thinks the change in seasons is disturbing Nathan. Last night it got down to 45F (around 7C), our coldest night so far. Nathan's room and jammies were warm, but Greg thinks that he still might be unsettled by the change in seasons. I haven't noticed any running nose or severe congestion.

Well that's good to hear you are being civil. Is there any one thing in particular you think is causing the tension? Is Nathan getting less attention from you or something? What is he actually doing? Just not sleeping or other things?

Megan, every wife needs a break from their husband, so you are not a bad wife for that. But... I'm not sure how to say this nicely, but your husband is a parent, too. He should have some say in his son's upbringing. Now, in the baby stage it does tend to be mom who makes all the calls, and to an extent that's totally understandable. It sounds like your husband might be frustrated if he doesn't feel like he is being heard regarding his son's care. My husband was totally for spanking before becoming a parent (as was I), but as our son got older he became more and more convicted that spanking was not right for his children. We talked about it; we compromised. At a time when you're both feeling relatively happy and okay, could you do the same thing? Maybe come up with some sort of compromise? Say, you won't let him cry until he's so many months old, but then you'll do some form of Controlled Crying (not CIO), where you or hubby will check on him every 5 minutes or something? Your husband has a right to change his mind about things he believed before he ever became a father, and it behooves you both to try and sit down and talk about stuff like this. We've talked endlessly about it. Our compromise was almost exactly that- 5 min of crying, then we intervene, but every day CIO still comes up after a certain amt of time. quote:
Megan Does Josiah sleep in his crib for his daytime naps? The majority of them- once in a while I'll hold him for one and we'll nap together. quote:

Do you think your husband would back off if his own sleep weren't disturbed? Thanks for the suggestion, unfortunately, we live in a little cabin where there's only one actual b/r and it's Josiah's. Dave and I sleep in the loft, so if you're in the house when he's crying, you're pretty much awake. quote:

((Ruth)) I'm glad you got to spend some good quality time with your hubby and boy. I'll pray tonight goes smoothly. Thank you so much for your support and suggestions ladies- you are wonderful! Josiah slept beautifully last night, which means mama got some sleep!! I hate to make Dave sound bad- he really is an amazing husband and father. He just hits the wall with J's crying much faster than I do.

I would say alot of men hit the wall faster Megan, from what I have heard anyway. I am glad you had a better nights rest. What Ruth was saying was not CIO, that's different to controlled crying. Does Dave know the difference between the two? Is he the one that really wants to just let him cry? He is too young at the moment really anyway. They do suggest not to do it til they are about 6 months of age I think. What other things have you tried?

ORIGINAL: nicole6598 Is Nathan getting less attention from you or something? What is he actually doing? Just not sleeping or other things? Well, Nathan goes to sleep just fine at 8pm, his normal bedtime. He goes to bed awake and settles down to sleep, just like always. It's several hours later that he starts crying in his sleep (seriously I walk in and his eyes are closed and he's openly crying). Then he wakes himself up and wants daddy or I to sit by his bed or hold him until he's asleep. But it takes forever to go back to sleep and last night it happened twice. The second time we went in to reassure him but did not stay. He eventually fell back asleep. I think he's getting good attention. He goes down for naptimes awake just fine. We do let him fuss for awhile before going in to check on him. We offer water and comfort, then leave. But he keeps on crying and crying. It's not every night, and Maggie may be on to something with the molars. He has one set already, but don't they get two sets? I also think it might be nightmares, then he's uncomfortable going back to sleep alone. He does have a nightlight. Erin, welcome to a new stage of parenthood! There's ups and downs, but you'll love it.

Personally, I think that 5 minutes can be too long to start with, especially in a baby that young. What I did was come back after first 1 minute, then 2 minutes, then 3 minutes, then 4 minutes, then 5 - ie take 15 minutes to build up to 5. That way they definitely know that you are still there, just a bit slow It's also worth looking at what you actually do when you do come back to check on them. I'd suggest being as boring and uninteresting as possible, and, unless they're really frantic, don't pick them up at all. Just turn them over, talk soothingly, stroke their heads, and then go. I put music on as well, loud enough for them to hear, not loud enough to disturb us. quote:

So when Dave went to sleep in the nursery, was it not to get away from the crying then, but because he didn't like it that Josiah was in your bed?

ORIGINAL: SweetLittleErin We just made it through our first night at home. Isaac was a wild man at feeding time but didnt eat too much, we are working on figuring out the best bottle/nipples for him. The hospital gave us a few to get by until we get it figured out...and with all the struggling he didnt eat like he should have yesterday, but we got a full feeding down him this morning. He's also VERY gassy and we think he needs to be on an incline but are trying to find the best way to do that. He's sleeping in a bassinet in our room at night and pack and play during the day. So happy that you're all home together Erin! We raised the mattress in our ds's cot at one end by just placing a folded towelling nappy (diaper) under it.

You can just stick a smaller, flatter pillow under the head of his bassinett. The pack and play is harder to do, maybe set 2 of the feet on paperbacks or something? You can exactly just prop the end of the mattress since it's so floppy. The breastflow nipples aren't bad, they are much, much slower then the playtex ones. With his gas, do you think the nipple flow is to fast? Avent makes the slowest ones that I have found. We tried switching to PLaytex when Gabby was like 7 months old, she was used to just the Avent slow flow nipples and she about drowned even with the slow flow playtex ones.

I'm not certain, but they look like they would fit right into an Avent bottle. Hehe, less cleaning for you.

I found the Avent teats (nipples) the best for my two as well. I also liked it that they did spouted teats for later on when you wanted to get them used to the idea of drinking from a cup.

I am not comfortable letting David cry for 20 minutes while I shower. I am going to talk to his pediatrician about starting solids at his 4 month well-baby visit on October 16. My sister is spending the day driving my grandma around running errands and my mom is at work.
