tinydancer2 -> Nonsense news, absurd situations going on...bring yours. (9/28/2008 3:25:06 PM)

My nonsense situation going on is about the Pirates, particularly Somalians.

Why do I see it as an absurd? Because in my understanding when you are doing commerce in international waters and knowngly going to pass by an area that has problems, at least when your cargo is "precious" and in the lately case dangerous carrying weapons, you have the responsability to see it go protected by some war vessels until it enters its port of destination.

If an exporting nation does not have vessels to patrol their cargo ask others to keep an eye for you etc. I cannot believe there is no laws reggarding protection of "special" cargos that Merchants Navies carry around the globe.

Is kind of ridiculous to deal with Pirates nowdays but those pirates can be dangerous also, particularly by hijacking weapon carrying merchant vessels . I do think most countries in this world today are fighting war on Terrorism, some more than others, I think.

Pirates

It's funny you mention it: some time ago I was watching a program on The History Channel, describing modern day pirates that are more than a far cry from those portrayed on some Disney movies, since the ones from Somalia, China, Southeast Asia, etc... are more than just wielding rocket-propelled grenades and AK-47's (not exactly a traditional blunderbluss): they're also engaged in cybercrimes/cyberpiracy, white-collar type crimes, kidnapping for ransom, and in this recent case, a shipment of Russian tanks (to tumultuous Kenya)!

Yup: these modern pirates aren't as easy on the eyes as say, Orlando Bloom or Johnny Depp (probably because they're more likely to gouge one's eyes out, to avoid international extradition, which in itself I recall, is next to impossible given the murky jurisdiction of international maritime laws)!

Yup, the Pirates are infesting many waters as Indonesia taking the lead as most dangerous of all..couple years ago in Iraq waters despite with coalision Navies around there were 4 serious incidents. There is the Strait of Malacca pirates but it seems their activities decreses when there are patrols from Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia working together ove there..Bangladesh port of Chittagog seems the most dangerous port in the world..

The pirates in Somalia are so bold that they launched some granades at a US Navy vessell sometime ago..then the US vessel fired back [8D], some pirates were hurt brought aboard for the pirates to be treated...that was kind!

Now I just discovered that: "The International Maritime Bureau indicated it opposes shipping firms using private security forces to escort commercial vessels through the strait, saying such moves "will raise the level of arms used by both sides and make these waters an even more dangerous place."

Hmmm..than what I thought was an absurd and lack of security going on etc is the advisory of the IMB...

LOL...we are not getting rid of pirates any time soon..

We should tell the police their presence in high crimes areas raises the level of weaponry the thugs are carrying and they should leave. Same, bad logic.

Maybe the navies of the countries whose ships are passing by these areas should be patrolling within visual distance of the cargo and tanker ships instead. That would be an appropriate use of force projection to secure the vital interests of the countries affected.

tinydancer2 -> RE: Nonsense news, absurd situations going on...bring yours. (9/29/2008 10:13:36 AM)

Yup, I for sure agree does not make sense what IMB suggests..particularly reggarding Somalia..is a country in political chaos I suppose..how to expect there is an active Navy or Cost Guard over there ?

It seems that Nigeria piracy is starting to act out also...as other areas..but when countries around come together to secure waters their activities goes down, in the case of tsunamies and other situations..it went down for a while.

It seems that IMB suggests that merchant vessels keep their distances from those countries waters as something as 80 miles..and that is it..but if those pirates are bold enough to even trow granades at warships they are up to anything.

Marcus. -> RE: Nonsense news, absurd situations going on...bring yours. (9/29/2008 10:32:05 AM)

The last couple were attacked more than 80 NM offshore. I remember hearing one was 200 miles offshore.

tinydancer2 -> RE: Nonsense news, absurd situations going on...bring yours. (9/29/2008 11:49:26 AM)

If I remember right 200 NM are considered soberan waters worldwide or just to some countries?

Well at least in the latest pictures the Pirates boats were very humble ones...what kind of vessels those pirates have, anyone knows?

Oh how I love the oceans and seas beauty, as everything related to it as vessels and stuff goes just fascinates me, sooo much history and many navegating all over for so long, carrying so many different flags..going to check the History Channel program about the Pirates, ebay may have it..lol

Here we go..the cargo is to go and belong to Sudan and not Kenya..

'Concern'

The Faina is currently moored off Somalia's coast close to the town of Hoboyo. There have been conflicting reports of where the Faina and its cargo were destined.

Kenya has insisted that the shipment was destined for its military.

But other sources, including a US navy spokesman, said it was bound for the autonomous government of South Sudan, in possible contravention of a peace accord. "

Sigh... it seems the pirates' "spokesperson" boasted that they will fight to the bitter end, if or when there's a commando raid/hostage rescue operation to be launched.

"A pirate spokesman told news agencies by satellite telephone that the ransom of $20m (£12m) must be paid by Monday night or the ship would be destroyed. "

Nato sending warships ships to combat piracy Nato

And just yesterday Pirates hijacked a huge tank also...

Then the situation: 6 US warships already in the area, Nato sending another 7 warships...Russia and several European countries will lauch an anti-piracy patrol.

Well, the mighty soverign countries could just establish a live target practice area then. Contact the little boats from an AWACS plane, or some such, and if there's not a proper response, then everyone gets a turn practicing their defense skills on terrorist like activities. Some safe routes of passage could be established for legitimate commerce, and folks without the transponder code of the week, or whatever, then Ahhsss di lasagna, baby. What a great way to find some return for the expense of all countries trying to operate a maritime peacekeeping force.

Pirates just so happen across a boat carrying tanks? I don't think so. There's some inside info there.

Take what you can. Give nothing back. Pay the cost for messing around.

There's always a healthy dose of nonsense news on CNN radio each weekday. They like to close out their segments with some nonsense news. I want to read about the latest strategies in breaking into a zoo's alligator pen and feeding it other zoo animals. Yeah.

Or there's the poor woman who stayed in her house at the top of the hill prior to it loosing its foundation and sliding down the hill 89' or so hitting two other homes, and she being ok after it all.

Forgetting the Pirates for now..

Concentrating in the Brasilian "Civil" Police that is in a strike for a month to have better salaries as their salaries are "frozen" for 14 years..than yesterday 1 thousand protester, tried to go to Sao Paulo Governor Palace to present a document and the Militar Police was there to blck the manifestation and put order etc The situation was chaotic as the 2 Polices confronted each other and many etcs...

Now..that is just insane situation all over..and do hope that negotiations do happen and the military, the Army, does not have to intervene again..[&o]

Video

That is so terrible..the ones that are suppose to give exemple of law and order unwisely choose a terrible approach plus the politics actions does not help also..its an election year there too.[:(]
