Eek! While it is great, it's also really, really, REALLY long! Not that that makes it bad, but wow, it just goes on! Which you especially notice when you're playing it on Rock Band. : )

I would say
Final Countdown - Europe -- Cheesy, I know, but it's just so much fun.

Rufas2000 -> RE: Songs with Great Intros and Builds (9/19/2008 5:21:00 PM)

Many of the string of Barry Manilow hits in the 70s. He built a career on those type of songs.

And the Metallica ballads "Fade to Black" & "One". The new one "The Day That Never Comes" does come close to that.

Also while it may be in the "familiarity breeds contempt" bin Stairway to Heaven is an excellent example of that along with Dream On.

One more: "Forever Yours" by Michael Sweet.

NotDoneYet -> RE: Songs with Great Intros and Builds (9/19/2008 8:06:05 PM)

Train, Train by Blackfoot
Green Grass and High Tides by the Outlaws

Some nice ones have already been mentioned here, but especially Barbara O'Reilly!

How about Plush-Stone Temple Pilots also?

A couple of others that I thought of that may not be on the A list, but still pretty signifigant are:

Walking on Sunshine-Katrina and the Waves
Head Over Heals-Go Go's
Creep-Radiohead

humbleinspirit -> RE: Songs with Great Intros and Builds (9/19/2008 8:20:54 PM)

Walk This Way-Aerosmith

NotDoneYet -> RE: Songs with Great Intros and Builds (9/19/2008 8:33:53 PM)

Sweet Emotion (the album version)

shawke -> RE: Songs with Great Intros and Builds (9/19/2008 9:55:53 PM)

Stay With Me--Faces. One of the coolest opening riffs ever!
Can't You Hear Me Knocking--Rolling Stones
Wild Horses by the Stones has a good build.

humbleinspirit -> RE: Songs with Great Intros and Builds (9/19/2008 10:55:20 PM)

Jump-Van Halen

Beat It-Michael Jackson

  • Where The Streets Have No Name-U2

  • This is the correct answer. Probably the best intro ever.

Giggles56 -> RE: Songs with Great Intros and Builds (9/20/2008 8:17:33 AM)

    Godzilla - Blue Oyster Cult
Back in the Saddle - Aerosmith

humbleinspirit -> RE: Songs with Great Intros and Builds (9/20/2008 8:19:35 AM)

    Jet Airliner-Steve Miller Band

Oh gee...how could I forget those????

I was listening to Aerosmith today...Joe Perry ROCKS the house! (and my earphones!) (and he's definitely in this old lady's top 10)

iluvatar -> RE: Songs with Great Intros and Builds (9/20/2008 7:11:52 PM)

Mr Crowley - Ozzy Osbourne (though the tribute album version w/ Tim Owens singing, Yngwie on guitar and Derek Sherinian on keys SMOKES the original and really punches you in the chest when the band comes in)

    Thunderstruck - AC/DC

Santa Monica - Everclear: not the intro, but the way the whole song builds w/ each verse getting angrier than the last, but not really getting louder or more heavily orchestrated. I didn't really like the song until somebody pointed that out to me. Now I love it.

    -Dan.

Dance To The Music-Sly & The Family Stone

AC/DC Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap
    AC/DC Hard as a Rock
AC/DC You Shook Me All Night Long
The Who Won't Get Fooled Again
    The Beatles Revolution
The Hollies Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress

Just a few off the top of my head...

    Mike

DaveW -> RE: Songs with Great Intros and Builds (9/22/2008 9:54:36 AM)

The absolutely best intro: "Procession/Story in Your Eyes" by Moody Blues on the Every Good Boy Deserves Favor album. How can you beat the entire history of western music compacted into 4 1/2 minutes?

huskarine -> RE: Songs with Great Intros and Builds (9/22/2008 10:18:35 AM)

"I Fought the La" by Newsboys
    "Clocks" by Coldplay
"Like a Child" by Jars of Clay
"With the Wonder" by Rich Mullins
    "Viva La Vida" by Coldplay
    "Stars" by Switchfoot

I really like that song! Although I almost like the remake of it that Kids In The Way did better than the original!

Zhi -> RE: Songs with Great Intros and Builds (9/23/2008 11:17:59 AM)

Rebirthing - Skillet - I WANT that incredible orchestral rock opening for my cellphone ringtone. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LIQ_NkmYw3g
Absolute - Thousand Foot Krutch - the build on this one is just phenomenal. Goes from semi-ballad to screaming in a single verse.
Move - Thousand Foot Krutch - great intro
My Heartstrings Come Undone - Demon Hunter
