Do you/have you read the apocrypha? I had never heard of it until I took a religion course in university and the professor insisted we get a Bible with it (though I didn't.) One of my versions on e-Sword has it, but I haven't taken a look at it.

No. I've never read the apocrypha. Since I'm not a Catholic my Bible doesn't have those books in it.

I've never read the apocrypha, although I've always wondered about it.
That article was interesting Clag, thanks.
Why do Catholics (and Greek Orthodox, and other denominations) include the Apocrypha in with the Bible?

I read them, they were included in my Bible curriculum in 8th and 9th grades.

Lexie, I've read some of the apocryphal books. I especially liked reading the book of Maccabees because it gives you an idea of the times that Jesus was born into, and the Hanukkah celebration is explained in that book.
It is pretty interesting reading, but not authoritative like the rest of the accepted books of the Bible.

That's interesting...I thought that the Catholic church placed the OT Apocryphal books on the same level as the cannonized Bible and "church tradition"... but I could be wrong, since I'm not Catholic.

Totally agree on that last point. I read a couple a few years ago as a friend was getting caught up in all different things and was confused as to what she had grown up learning and what was in the those texts.
I was with Clag- my Catholic friend says they hold the same weight, maybe its personal? Depends on each person or church?

Hey girls, I don't normally come in this thread, but I had a question that I don't think really deserves it's own thread. Why do people type "G-d" and "L-rd" not God and Lord with the O?

Hmmm I asked someone this before and I can't remember Stina. I think its something about preserving like the holiness and stuff like that of His name. I am pretty sure Jews don't write His name like that...I cuold be wrong LOL

Some people do it out of respect for God's name. It's Jewish tradition that His name is too holy to be spoken or written (or something like that), so some people type G-d instead of "God" out of respect for His name.
I understand and respect where that's coming from, but God and Lord are just titles, not His actual name. We don't even know His true name as far as I understand. Yaweh (YHWH/YHVH, which is called the tetragrammaton or something like that anyway) is the closest thing we know and really just represents His name.
The first person I ever saw do that was Jewish and that was the explanation she gave me. She's now Messianic, but still writes it like that out of reverence.

Ohhhhh, OK. I knew about YHWH....The Jews didn't use vowels back then or something like that, so no one today really knows how it's supposed to be said or spelled. But, in English His name is Jehovah.
Well, that just cleared a lot up for me...Thanks!

I"ve heard the Hebrew translation of the letters WHWH, but it doesn't translate well to English phonetics. I've always been interested in the different names/titles of God in the bible. I think there's a list of many of them in my bible, but I don't remember where.

The pronunciation I've heard for YHWH is the Hebrew word for each letter. It sounds something like "yud heh veuve heh"
