Honestly, they died after the Nixon Administration, I believe. (with the exception of the Reagan-Mondale election in 1984)

Reagan was one of the best.

Reagan was GOOD! I won't quite say that he was the best, but I will definitely say that he was much better than how he was viewed while he was President.

One of his best contributions to this country, as least in my opinion, was he made it cool for people to be proud of America, again. After the strain of Vietnam, the scandals in the Nixon Administration, the short Ford Administration, the dismal Carter Administration, and the Iran Hostage situation, Reagan restored a sense of pride to the American people that had been missing for far too long.

christians and politics

Politics is the tool the unsaved and Christians who do not trust their God turn to in their attempts to gain control of a universe they fear.

The Bible equates rebellion to the sin of witchcraft. At first this may seem strange, but upon closer examination we find that both have at their core the desire to control. This is also at the heart of politics.

Liberals are offered the false hope of unrestricted indulgence without consequence and conservatives are offered the illusion that the world can be "set right".

Politics and the illusion of control is just one of many ways Satan draws Christians away from trusting their Lord.

James 4:4
Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.

Just out of curiosity are you a JW? I know that JW's believe that participating in politics is viewed as a sin.

Having said that, I can sympathize with this sentiment although I do not agree with it. We all know that politics is a dirty business. For example, you have the religious right that gets involved as they lobby the Republican party for legislation that reflects their beliefs and the Republican party uses them to win elections. However, what ends up happening are "Christians" being tarnished by supporting secular statesmen. In addition, every politician and his mother claim to be "Christian" so that any bone headed thing they do or any lie they proclaim carries with it the stamp of a Christian.

Having said that, I disagree that Christians should remove themselves out of the arena of politics. You must realize that we are political creatures. For example, you have politics in the church, at work, even at home. How then is governmental politics a special exception?

In short, as Christians we are called to be lights unto the world. Why then are we to put out our lights in the political arena by withdrawing ourselves entirely. Granted, I have issues with some of the tactics the religious right takes, however, I believe that they have made this world a little better by their participation in some ways.

I think everyone should view God's thoughts regarding politics. In 1 Samuel chapter 8 we see the people asking God for an earthly king. Everyone should read it because it is a good read. At first, God protests as he describes the abuses man will inflict upon his fellow man when placed in power over them. However, the people persist and God allows it to happen. Notice he does not forbid the practice, rather, he only warns us of its problems. From a Biblical perspective the ideal government is to have God reign as king above us with earthly judges to settle disputes. Therefore, as Christians we should make sure that God is our king above that of our fellow man.

The problem is with those who are called by His Name....not with unbelievers. If we are here to assign blame then the fault is not with the stars. My theory being if America is going to hell in a hand basket perhaps we should get our own house in order before expecting change from the outside in accordance with 2 Chronicles 7:14. Also to some degree Deut. 28 comes into play. Have noticed a big issue with Christians is legalized abortion. If as Christians we secretly lust, watch porn, fall in and out of illicit relationships and at the same time expect change from the outside, perhaps it is a sign of some sort of group dysfunction. Don't cha think? The individual Christian and the Church as a whole is not doing its job and perhaps we are the ones who bring the curse unto our land. Is that an indication of the Divine knocking at our door?
America has never been a Christian Nation. If there ever was such a thing. Our President is not both political and religious leader. There has been a Christian influence but that does not rise to the level of Christian Nation. There was a time in human history when the Pope was both political and religious leader but apparently things did not work out so well.
If one goes by human history then peace is nothing more than the lull in between wars, this side, east of Eden. Years ago while in the Navy i asked a Navy Seal who was starring out to the ocean...''What are you looking for?" His response was ''I'm looking for a war?'' Given American History it is not unreasonable to conclude we are, as a whole, a nation of warriors. Perhaps it is in our blood. We fight others from the outside and we fight each other from the inside through the political process which is nothing more than a substitute for war. Besides, if biblical prophecy means anything then things will get worse before they get better. Anyways, without apology, my vote is for MCcain and Palin.

In the early history of this country, you had to be a Christian of good reputation to hold a government office.

The coup of 1789 replaced a voluntary federation of 12 Christian nations (and one humanist republic along for the ride) with a secular (anti-God) economic unit in hock to the bankers.

It's going to take a long time to undo that assault upon our liberties and pocketbooks.

Starting with widespread repentance for our rejection of Great God our King, and our willingness to bow before a new deity, "we the people" (i.e. -- bankers and lawyers).

Politicians will be politicians. What I mean about that is that anyone in government that sees an opportunity to leverage anything including religion will use it for self promotions.
